Sounded and felt like bricks hitting the house. Scariest storm I've ever been in. Only twice in my life have I ever hid in a closet from a storm and both times were in Belle Fourche.

We we're in this storm in the basement it sounded like someone just throwing large baseballs or even large stones at our house! We did alright, shocked my three year old grandson thought they were cannon balls but he stayed calm and just laughed it off.
@@kristamuhm1037 you're lucky! Both my girls were terrified and cried off and on for hours afterwards. She heard the skylights breaking as we ran for the closet, so i dont blame her. I'm glad I didnt hear that or I would have had a harder time too.
As a citizen of Belle Fourche you guys did amazing job. It was a scary storm but we faired alright. Lost a few windows and stuff to close to the windows. We appericate the professionlism your crew had. Our community got together right away and begin clean up. Couldn't ask for a better town!! Hope when you return you don't bring us a cat four hail storm lmao!!

Okay... the city of Belle Fourche is NOT destroyed. There was a lot of destruction, yes, but not an entire town was destroyed. No lives were lost. I was in it myself and it was scary as.... but we as a community are still here. Be careful with your titles.
Destroyed just means that there was damage to the town. This is different from completely destroyed (EF5 tornado)
Well maybe if people think it's gone they'll stop moving here.

I did notice traveling through the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles that a lot of auto dealers had roofs or awnings over their inventory to prevent this from happening to them.
My Mom lives in Belle and she lost screens on the north side of her house and one basement window but otherwise came through okay. She's lived there a long time and knows to have her car/truck under cover during the summer.
Imagine having a car lot and every car on the lot is totaled
Tell all residents to only use local contractors not the fly by night ones. Trust me it willbe worth the wait instead of dealing with morons that lie threw their teeth. Its been a year and we're still waiting to have our house done right.

This is the 2nd time for me, 1998 in July just like this one.. lost all the windows and siding on the west part of my house, have damage to all my autos, lost my husband’s motorcycle, but yet God got me through the storm.. still here, still South Dakota proud,
Lived there as a kid in 98 I remember that nights storm vividly.
I remember that storm too. I lived in Spearfish but was babysitting young kids in Belle and i was only a teenager. Was very scary. Absolutely totalled my moms car.
Why are all the fuel filler covers open on the cars?
Does anyone know what's up with the fuel tanks all being open on the cars after? Was that something intentional, or did the hail pop them open? It was so weird.
Just now seeing this, I visited Belle Fourche DAYS after the storm, I only saw a handful of windows on a house, store, etc. I heard from locals that (allegedly) MILLIONS of windows were shattered with wait times out months for repairs, and everyone was pretty shaken. The trucks belonging of the place we were visiting (Paleo Adventures! Lovely folks!) were all completely totaled, and looked like they were hit with bats!
The High Plains, the Black Hills, and the Rocky Mountain Front Range is a region that is notorious for destructive hailstorms. Destructive hailstorms happen every few years in that area. I believe that the nearby town of Spearfish had a very destructive hailstorm just a few years ago.
We were just there. Saw the menacing clouds north of us while we were in Spearfish. Prayers for everyone affected by this storm.

I lived out in Sturgis and I visited in 2006 an 2011 and took my daughter out to see her mom who lives there. 2006 my daughter lived there and her Ford focus was totaled by hail anywhere from 2 inches is 3 1/2 in diameter I counted 143 just on the top of the car that did not include windows or doors
In 11 I borrowed my wife's car and went up to Deadwood South Dakota and on my way back got her car totaled by hail

Was that dealership in Spearfish? Passed thru Good Fork (English translation) a couple times and don't remember a dealership.
That dealership is Scott Peterson Motors on the North West side of town here in Belle Fourche.

Baseball sized hailstones took out our windows and living room furniture. We were just talking about remodeling.

Thermopolis Wyoming. We went through this 5 years ago. Heres what will happen. As insurance kicks in, hundreds of roofing shingle jobs will happen. Empty buildings will be rented for several months and PDR teams will be patiently knocking all the car dents out. We had back to back events about 3 days apart so have yourself a safe place to park now just in case.
Why at 1:49 did all the vehicles have the doors open to the gas tanks ?
Omg this is so scary for me personally I was in Texas but tow of my sisters and one of my brothers were in that and all are windows broke unfortunately but just stay safe

Hail hitting it does that. Remember, this hail was blown sideways by 70+ mph winds . Much different than pea size just falling straight down like rainfall.
Listen to you all. Pissed of because they used destroyed. It was a bitch of a storm and it did destroy. Just because nobody died, thank the lord above, but it did destroy many many many things. You think that big ass tree wasn't destroyed or all those vehicles your damn straight up wrong.

I live in Hot Springs. The hail was so big that the force it came with blew out everything including the gas caps. It looks like someone took a bat to my car.

Good luck getting those windows replaced. People waiting all over the country for months to get windshield, etc. replaced.
They only keep "x" amount in stock. They have to be manufactured beyond that. Let's says 100 Ford Focus lost windshields. They have 5- maybe 10 "in stock". That's 90 -95 that need to be made in the automotive glass company. And they're all different.

Sorry. It won't stop anyone from moving to South or North dakota. Myself I don't know why anybody would want to live out there in North or South Dakota I've been to both States and they were pretty ugly. Anyway you will still get people from California moving there and from New York and the whole East Coast because people know that there isn't any safe place in the US as far as weather is concerned.
