    Great video. Not into breeding mice or rats(my wife would freak...lol), but I do raise black soldier flies. at the moment I am feeding wild mice in my bug shed...lol. The way you have the trays set up is an awsome idea that I can use for the BSF. I got the idea for my rabbit watering system from another rat breeder video. Thanx again.

    Did you notice that last 70 series tub on the bottom was open a little don't know if you have any in it?

      @hookemreptiles  Год назад +2

      Thanks for pointing it out! I just leave my tubs slightly open when I don’t have colonies in them. Kinda helps me know without opening them that I don’t have anything in them. Waiting to fill them up haha. Just been so focused on getting these new racks up and feeding the collection I don’t have enough asf🤣

      Asf over rats all day. I don’t breed rats anymore. So much better for the snakes and easier to keep! Can’t recommend them enough! Congrats on making the jump into the snakes. It’s like Christmas every day I go to my snake room.

    I live in North Central Texas. Where would be a good place to buy a breeding colony?

    • @hookemreptiles
      @hookemreptiles  Год назад +3

      I really have no idea about who breeds around the area. I usually only wholesale large amounts to a buyer. Your best bet is to get on a FB group and ask in your area. My advice would be buy 18 small females and 3 small males. Will take them 3-4 weeks to breed and have a clutch of babies. That way you know you aren’t getting screwed and getting sold aged out proven breeders. Has happened to me before. People wanna sell you adults for more money and say they’re virgin breeders. Nope they have terrible clutches of babies if any at all. Sometimes it’s better to buy them young plus they’re less expensive in numbers. Just my 0.2

    Hey there bud,
    I’ve been breeding these guys for a bit but they always seem to eat each other or the babies, not sure if it’s the moms or like if they die off cause of water nipple? Any ideas, 1.2 and 1.3 colonies

    • @hookemreptiles
      @hookemreptiles  Год назад +2

      Make sure you’re feeding enough protein. I use the 20+% rat food from chewy and black sunflower seeds. Make sure you dump enough seed in the tub twice/three times a week depending on how many babies you have. Water can be issue just put more flake in the front of the tubs! Also colonies that kill get fed off. If I see a colony and know they have babies on the ground if they eat all of them more than once they’re getting fed off

    • @hookemreptiles
      @hookemreptiles  Год назад +2

      It’s a win win bc my large snakes get a nice meal lol

    • @danielvelasco8524
      @danielvelasco8524 Год назад +1

      @@hookemreptiles I actually feed the Kalbachs from chewy and give boiled eggs since I have back yard chickens and eggs like no other. They still kill babies or they die don’t know which it is, somehow I think that they don’t get water but same set up as yours pretty much. Maybe Nipples need to be more open. I will look into the seeds. Been watching all your vids… love the info. I know this is basic but be good to see how easy your water is coming out of how you set that stuff up as I was thinking of putting a snake water bowl upside down so they can reach? Don’t know what it could be… but frustrating. 19 colonies

    • @hookemreptiles
      @hookemreptiles  Год назад +1

      @@danielvelasco8524 I’m almost 100% sure it’s some of your water probs. If they aren’t pinks and mommas not eating them then shouldn’t be the mommas. Now if a weaned or close dies they will eat them just bc it’s good nutrition for them. I’d add more flake and start there. Shoot me a message 9032033302 and I’ll send some videos later. I used spring loaded nipples

      Unfortunately you can’t ship rodents like rats like you can snakes. I’d love to trust me haha I will say though we’re about to start doing some F/T orders and shipping with dry ice. If that interests you at all reach out to me on Instagram at hook.em.royals and I’ll get your info etc. Will probably be starting to get it rolling early next month. Still In the process of getting everything settled but once it is I can pump out as many as you need and ship fedex. Thanks!

    I have 9 colonies of suffers the females keep eating on the males faces until they're Raw why are they doing that

    • @hookemreptiles
      @hookemreptiles  Год назад +1

      You’re prob making colonies to old. Male needs to be in with females for best success when they’re small/medium. If you throw old males in with newer females they usually resent them. I start my colonies out young so they have time to get used to males. Never re use a male for different colonies. Always feed them off along with females after 6-7 months.
