We always keep a small supply of AFS for trouble feeders. Another thing we do is we put several rats in with ASF grow outs to get them scented so it’s easy to switch and asf eater to rats.

I agree about ASF as a superior food source. I wouldnt say they are for picky eaters as that gives a negative stereotype, I have multiple animals that I will sometimes feed a ft rat othertimes a asf.
I will say the likely reason why asf do so well is because they are a smaller prey item and therefor cause less stress to the animal and are less intimidated by it. Also with ASF its important to get from a source with a friendly line.

I have a ball python coming to my rescue who is severely scarred because of a rat being left in her tub by the person who owned her before my friend rescued her. Not only that, but we're fairly certain the person bred her while she was underweight so she's super emaciated and also having shedding issues. There's 3 males coming from the same person and they, too are underweight and have shedding problems as well.
Please, if you feed live prey of any sort, be sure to supervise until the prey is eaten or removed. Rodents can and will attack and/or kill a snake.

I’m only offer asf to my ball python, it’s been 2 years and breed them for my self. Some ball python still picky even with asf, so the case on each ball python can be different.

In the UK it’s illegal to live feed and so I think we tend to have a bit more of an issue with “problem feeders”. I’ve got 55 snakes and have 4 particularly picky feeders. I’ve especially had problems bringing in snakes from Europe which were live feeders and then moving them over to f/t. ASFs have proved invaluable and I have 3 snakes from the 4 problem ones that only now eat ASFs and are doing really well eating most if not every week. I’ve another snake from the UK that was supposedly a rat feeder and for 4 months wouldn’t eat when I got her but then ate every week when ASFs were offered and successfully transitioned back onto rats during her build phase giving me a nice clutch of 6 eggs last season. She’s building again well and now takes rats every time without hesitation.
In short having a stock of ASFs even if just a backup is a great thing and one I’d highly recommend.

Great video. Question: My 2yr old ball hasn’t eaten in a couple of months and I know it’s probably brumation but he seems interested in food. He’s active at night and when I offer him food he looks like he’s about to strike and then backs off. I feed thawed food every one to weeks but should I try live or just be patient. He acts normal otherwise. Any comments are welcome. Thanks

I’m no snake handler, but it cannot be humane to keep snakes in small tubs like that. Correct me if I am wrong.
