"I don't draw pretty pinup girls because I know that will get more traction - I draw weird fantastical creatures because that's what I love to do" - He speaks truth
thanks Walter!
I can completely empathise with the parent thing. My dad never seems to be completely invested in my work as an artist or animator, almost constantly comparing my work to what he knows from a bygone era way way before even HIS time. My mother was a very encouraging parent when it came to my work, but she's been gone since 2008. It can feel very lonely at times.
Your mom's encouragement will stay with you forever❤️ All the best to you!!

I love acknowledging other artists by compliments and encouragment. I teach via patreon the art of window painting and it gives me joy to the attention I give beginners can lead to a successful career in window painting. I know I have launched dozens of careers because my students tell me so.
That's amazing!!! It must feel so good knowing that you've made a difference in so many people's lives by sharing your knowledge, passion, and compliments with them!😊 Thank you for sharing that and for watching this video!

@@BobbyChiu Wow! Thanks for the reply. I didn't expect that. It was cool hearing you meditate and are into Joe Dispenza. I've read a couple of his books. I have also explored meditation, it definitely helps keep me focused. You are not only an amazing artist but an amazing person as well. I have much admiration for you.
Going to join the life drawing class this next Wednesday! I also plan to set aside time this year for Schoolism classes.
Speaking of compliments, thanks for all you do, Bobby. Your love of fantastical creatures helps fuel mine and your rendering style is inspirational and aspirational. I've been watching you since Middle School, over 14 years ago. The first video I came across was a purple dog gargoyle, if you remember that one.
Wow, thank you for your kind comment and for your long time support of Bobby's channel!! We look forward to seeing you in tomorrow's Life Drawing Class and on Schoolism😊

bobby, i came from your interviews but i’m gobsmacked at how spot on your own advice is!! this is exactly what i needed right now and i’m glad this video found me. thank you!!
Thank you for the kind comment, MJ! We're so glad you found Bobby's videos and it's great to hear they've been helpful for you. Thanks for your support!😊

You’re such an inspiration Bobby 😭 Thank you for this wonderful video 🙏
You are so welcome
sometimes I get the feeling that some people are just served a style when it comes to their art. My entire time learning how to draw and sculpt I've focused on pinups and just pure degeneracy 😅 but where I get the most praise is the ones that usually has to do with old disgusting creatures. It just comes naturally out of me... maybe my brain is trying to tell me something 😂
You should definitely explore that side more and draw more creatures to see where that will take you😊! Best of luck and thanks for watching!

Adam Duff send me here. You Bobby and Adam - you are my favorite teachers, my soulmates. Thanks for all beatiful things you do for us.
Shouts out to Adam Duff! Glad you found this channel, welcome😊 And thanks for watching!

Thank you Bobby, for all you've done in the art community!
Thank you for this. I was one of those people who draw pretty pinup girls for likes and I hate it so much. But yeah I always give compliments to other beginner artists.
Totally! A simple compliment can really make someone's day!😊 Thanks for watching.
~S
Growing up in a strict household, my Ma tended to be foolish when it came to stuff like this. Her motto is "Never accept compliments, because people who compliment you want you to fail. Accept the hate and insults, because they want you to succeed"
My Pa on the other hand never liked me doing art at all
It's taken me over 10 years to find out how wrong my Ma was thanks to the people I look up to. Now, Im living alone in Uni and doing my best to stay strong. Its lonely here, no one else draws here, and the genre of art I like is anime specifically. Nonetheless, Ill do everything I can to stand my ground and persevere
It takes courage to continue what you love doing with little support from others! Just know that believing in yourself can be just as valuable as having lots of support. Wishing you all the best❤️😊

@@BobbyChiu thank you very much, Mr Bobby
This is a very sweet video. Thank you for uploading it, I think i needed to hear it.
Thanks for your kind comment! Glad to hear this video came to you at the right time😊

I want to get good at art because I love painting, drawing and 3D but als to prove to myself that I can create beautiful stuff - and of to course work in the game industry, a dream I have kept inside me since I was a child even though I wanted to work as a translator for the longest time. I can confirm that, at leats for me, this inner drive is what makes me keep going and I think if someone doesn't have this as motivation... you will give up sooner or later.
On a side note, I saw this at university. Before deciding on an art career as a profession I did study Japanese studies. I was one of those who learnt Japanese even in their free time and was obsessed with getting good at this language. I saw many other students failing very soon because they just decided on Japanese studies due to, well "I like Anime"- reasons but learning a language, especially one that is SO different from your mother tongue (German for me), needs time and MUCH effort. Many gave up their studies. After university I still wanted to be great at Japanese, understand e.g. games, Japanese RUclips channel and interact with Japanese and this intrtinsic motivation really shows. The same thing I have with art - even though I'm still quite mediocre at it, nowhere near the level I'm aspiring.
What a great story! Hard work is required to go from 0-100 and become great at something, just like the work you put in to learn Japanese! Same goes for art, or any other skill really! Thanks for sharing that reminder for us all😊

I don't draw for likes, comments and traction but I do love drawing pretty pinup girls. Nothing wrong with it. Just draw what you love.
Precisely😊!
~S
This is nice
*amazing*
Thanks!!😊
~S
It is quite frustrating if your artwork is not given love and appreciation. But the love or passion of drawing hums inside-I love it still. Moreover artist and how to pave your way isn’t taught in life or education. This way is full of thorns. Some fortunate ones show extraordinary talent and succeed but majority of others are left behind. These are also uncut diamonds but who cares.
Great points, and you're right about not all artists getting the recognition they deserve. Hopefully this channel can help you fill those educational gaps and teach you a little bit about how other artists have formed their own paths to success in the industry. Best of luck to you!!
~S
Amazing, the way you sculpt these characters... They look so real. Especially before you apply color. These marble figures jump off the screen at me.
Thank you very much!
Mothers are THE BEST! I have a very close relationship with my mom... and my dad but my mom definitely understands my work more :)
Being kind is free. It is absolutely free and always lifts me up when I compliment and encourage every artist I see. I never know what kind of challenges someone is facing to make art. I never know what abuse, systemic challenges, poverty challenges, or mental health issues they are going through. I never regret boosting another artist. Never. Thanks for sharing Bobby ❤️ let’s not rag on those who draw pinups tho- for some of us it’s what we love to do! 😉
Hi Ollie, if you listen carefully, I never said anything bad about doing pin up art. I’m saying that I draw what I want... not because it’s going to be popular. I love and appreciate great pin up artists but it’s just not the kinds of things I want to do
Thank you for encouraging. It is so true. I went to art school because I am so passionate about painting and learning digital art thinking the lecturers will help me become better only to end up fearing painting and doubting myself. The school needs students to paint in the manner that they advocate and hopefully all will paint like they came from the origin. I prefers the painterly or expressive style and often gets negative reviews. Before this I tot art is encompassing and varied. I tot lecturers find your strength and help you become better with your own strength. Instead now I feel it’s like a duplicating approach. Frankly I do appreciate the beauty in their preferred style. But I am just more thrilled with painterly strokes and more ruggard approach…… hearing what you said help me feels validated.
Sadly, a lot of art teachers are restricted to teach only what the school's curriculum requires, so many don't get a chance to really hone in on a student's strengths and help them develop their unique style. But we always recommend drawing or painting the things you enjoy drawing and painting, otherwise your love for creating art will quickly fade. Best of luck to you and hope that Bobby's videos can help you find the right artistic path for you!!😊

Love, love, love this Bobby! Encouragement is a topic very close to my heart, it's one of the reasons I admire your approach to interviews and work so much! I'm glad you found your path, not only in your art style, but in your people style! Love it!
Thank you for saying that! Bobby knows how far a compliment can really go and is a big advocate for giving compliments whenever possible! Thanks so much for watching😊

Refreshing talk after years of compositing and wanting to bust out thee ol’pencil again, thanks B00yah! Bobby ☺️. Btw your 3d shading technique is really nice & helpful. First piece & my fav. of yours is the chubby green furry fairy worm/ bug with lit -up antennas. Always just pondered a back story for that creature.. plus glowy and/ or shiny things appeal to me.
Hey Fang, JL here. Y'know I always wondered the same thing about Bobby's creature backstories too. Maybe one day there will be a book of stories. ~JL
this is very good
Glad you liked the video! Thanks for watching😊

So true!
Thanks for watching!!

What you say is very true and very valuable, thanks
Glad you think so!
👉🏆
Dude I love your workflow. My photoshop stuff is pretty un optimised so this was great just to watch
Edit: to add to that there was a lot of stuff I didn’t understand what or how you did it. Could you make a video explaining for sinstance the step where you switched to green? I mean all of it would be great…! Thanks!
If you're able to, you should definitely check out Bobby's "Digital Painting" course on Schoolism: schoolism.com/courses/painting/digital-painting-bobby-chiu He goes way more in depth about how he approaches digital painting and shares many of his helpful tips! Hope this helps😊

What a lovely soul, it's rare to hear such wonderful inspiring and genuine stuff like this from the heart especially on social-media!
Self validation is a gift you can only give yourself and it is one of the most precious especially when you are doing the thing that brings you joy. The gift you have given Bobby is that of true leadership and authenticity. :D
Thank you for your kind comment! You are totally right about the self-validation and how important it is to have your own back and compliment yourself when doing what you love😊 Thanks for watching!!
