It has been said that when the Bee Gees heard this version of their song, they said that this was how the song should be sung. Al Green is as good as it gets.
Wow -- years ago I walked into a doctor's office and they were playing the Bee Gees original version of this song. There was another patient sitting there as I came in, and I said, "I know they wrote the song and sang it first, but it belongs to Al Green." She smiled and nodded in agreement.
How Can You Mend A Broken Heart was written and originally released by the Bee Gees. The song is not talking about the heartache of losing your main squeeze as most people believe, but speaks about the agony the Brothers Gibb faced after their period of breaking up as a group and of not speaking as brothers. A sad piece of trivia - Barry Gibb once confessed that he has to live with the fact when each one of his younger brothers died, it was during a time when he wasn't speaking to them.
This is not one oh Al’s biggest hits but it’s one of my favorite songs by Al. I think you should listen again. Think about heartache and pain of not wanting to live but finding a reason to live. His vocals are amazing on this . Takes you to church and preach it to you.
This song really speaks to the heart in a gentle way to soothe you when you are dealing with loss. When you have to challenge yourself to keep moving forward. Al does that in his music as well as anyone ever has. The background instrumentals/vocals are purposely not overwhelming because they compliment Al's slow delivery. But, it is a much needed song and great in it's own way and purpose. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
This was a cover originally done by the Bee Gees. Al put his own spin on it. Some other Al Green songs that might like better are: Let's Stay Together (a bop), Love and Happiness, Look What You've Done for Me, I'm Still in Love with You. Al Green brought a gospel flair to pop music. One of the greats vocalists of all time!
Ashley you must see his live performance in his plaid suit! You my girl Ashley, but don’t mess with Al…we go way back lol! I’m 72 young so that will tell you how far back…lol!❤
Ashley:. The production for this song was trademark Al Green. Willie Mitchell was the producer of most of Al Green's greatest hits. Maybe this quote from Willie Mitchell will help you understand what he was trying to do in the production of this song. "According to Mojo magazine, producer Willie Mitchell instructed the band to imagine "they were sitting by a river, a forest across the water, with all this music coming out of the forest and floating across the river, kind of delayed.""
Oh, people who have experienced real broken hearts be really feeling this. It's not about reacting violently, or wanting to commit suicide, but just plain being under control dealing with hurt heart issues. Much tougher for people of today's time.❤
Baby gurrrrrrrrrrl...This Man blessed this raggedy world with his gifted instrument...His Vocals. You must see these OG's live. Period 💐🎤✊🏽❤ Rest In Paradise Mr. Green.
I love the legendary Al Green, he could sing the Gettysburg address and I'd melt! This song is iconic but I think you have to have been through that kind of heartbreak to really feel it!!
It's my 1st time on your channel. This is not that kind of song, Lil Sis! The song is melancholy. Just like you're gonna give Al Green another chance so will I of your channel. I'm gonna watch some of your other videos.😊
Al was one of the greatest pure singers and entertainers of all time. You should check out "Simply Beautiful", "Love and Happiness", "What a Wonderful Thing Love Is", "Look What You Done for Me", "For the Good Times", "Guilty", "I'm Glad Your Mine". His "I'm Still In Love With You" is one of the greatest albums ever released. I would put it up their with "Thriller" and other greats. In fact in my opinion it was better.
In the postapocalyptic movie Book of Eli Denzel Washington tries to fall asleep in a cruel world somewhere under ruin of a tunnel with his own mind full of sorrow...he put on headpones and with this song he fell asleep. All Green just save him for a while from his pain. Never heard a song that can feel your pain so perfectly and for a while turned it to something almost beatiful. You don't feel it, which could mean, that you are strong and happy :) First hearing - Hall & Oates - Everytime you go away.
You’re going to have to react to the original with The Bee Gees. I love Al Green’s voice but to really appreciate the beauty of the song you have to listen to The Bee Gees the writers of this song. It came out in 1971 by very young Bee Gees and became their first #1 hit for them in the US. ❤❤❤
Back Up the Train...one of All Green's first hits is what got me. You probably will like Love and Happiness (up beat), Let's stay Together, or For the Good Tims.
Just so you know - this song was written and originally performed by the Bee Gees...but with this cover I think it belongs to All Green now. Loved how it was used in the movie "The Book of Eli" starring Denzel Washington. If yo have not seen that movie you might check it out...I think you'll like it.
Back then, people sang to capture the mood of the song and music. You have to have some finesse! You can't go vocally crazy all the time. If you didn't like that, try Al singing this song live!
We don't what to tell you but Al Green was the man in my day he was love songs and if you can't feel it I feel sorry for but he's one of the greatest singer's of all times 😢
When you get a chance watch the live version 1971 or 72, my preference. Also the live version of For The Good Times on Soul train. Thing is Al is going to take his time to sing a song. He wants you to hang on every word.
Yes, Ashley, Al Green is the man. My mom grew up in the church, only listened to gospel music, but there was one person she loved, Al Green. People like who they like, so I'm not going to bring any smoke.
This is a favorite of mine. I appreciate your honesty though because that what reactions should be; honest! Al was the man back in the day thugh. He definitely had his own unique style. That was what made him so special.
I can appreciate your honest opinion. Some songs take listening to them a couple times for it to grow on you but as another person commented, Al Green is as good as gets.
Listen, growing up, Al Green was a favorite in my house-my parents/sister had one of his albums but, he never did it for me and don’t y’all come for me 😂
I really love this song. But I get what you're saying. It's perhaps unique in that it's very bluesy, yet in a major 7th key -where normally it would be in a minor. And it is a cover of a Bee Gees tune. He goes off on his interpretation -in a good way I think. Deeply emotional and using that blues groove with the major key. Pretty cool.
In fairness to the Right Rev. Al check out Let's Stay Together and some of the other songs on his Greatest Hits album. If you still aren't feeling him after that the alright.
It's always good to be honest. Al always did a soul version of a Pop or Country song on his albums. This was for people who were familiar with The Bee Gees song. A slow jam that grow to be a classic for him but not every song back in the day can hit every time. You have great taste and I'll trust you'll learn to love them in time.
This song is not a love song, it refers to the break up of the singing group The Bee Gees. "How Can You Mend.." was never released a single by Stax Records, later in 1978 Vogue released it as a 45 rpm. This tune was written after a breakup of the Bee Gees. “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart”, originally released by The Bee Gees, was the lead single on the Bee Gees album Trafalgar. Primarily written by Barry and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, this song was the groups first U.S. number one hit! The song was written after a period of distance between the brothers. The writing of the song helped bring the brothers back together. Billboard ranked the track as No. 5 song for the year of 1971. Lyrically, the song is genius. Its central question about how to mend a broken heart is answered in one word never actually uttered by Robin Gibb: Love. Barry and Robin wrote the song as they were bringing the band back together after the Bee Gees had split up. It really is a song about the brothers and for the brothers but it reflects the universality of sorrow being vanquished by joy, the joy of love. This most human of truths will remain a constant as long as people live. Al Green's one and only number one hit was in 1972, Al Green went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with "Let's Stay Together," his only US chart topper.
One of greatest male r&b vocalist of all time!!Periodttt
HANDS DOWN THE GOAT!!!!!
It has been said that when the Bee Gees heard this version of their song, they said that this was how the song should be sung. Al Green is as good as it gets.

1971 Bee Gees, I looked it up.. ♠W.G.
There is no difference...a broken heart is such a special pain that it transcends the cause of the break.

Facts. 'Cause, at a certain point...the "cause" of the heartache doesn't matter anymore. You have to deal with the pain.

Damn!!!!
Say that $hit again, chile!

You definitely have to check out Al Green's live performance of this song from 1972. That performance blows the studio version away.
Yessss it's awesome
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL is my all time favorite of his.
He was CROONING on Simply Beautiful!! This song he express how sad & heartbroken he is.
It's a very emotional song. His heart is crushed.
Not many people can do a Bee Gees cover and kill it like the Rev. Al Green.

Al Green is definitely one of my favorite artists. He has a lot of hits but his song For The Good Times is my favorite!
Try "For The Good Times". "Funny How Times Slips Away" w/Lyle Lovett. Al Green is so incredible, and I LOVE him singing this song.
It's my 1st time on your channel. This is not that kind of song, Lil Sis! The song is melancholy. Just like you're gonna give Al Green another chance so will I of your channel. I'm gonna watch some of your other videos.😊

New Birth was a classic group consisting of smaller parts (similar to P Funk). Their band was called the Nite-Liters who had plenty of hits.
Bee Gees original, but Al Green did to this what Whitney Houston in later years did to Dolly Parton's I'll Always Love You 🎙🎶
Listen to the live version
Uh oh.. Al Green.. the best of the best
Watch his videos. Makes a big difference.
I respect ur honesty.....on this song, u dont get the full AL Green effect. It is one of my favs by him though.

Al Green has soul in every cell but on this one, they're trying to do a gospel slowdance deal. "Let's Stay Together" is real Al Green..imo.
