Al Green A Change Gonna Come live at United We Stand...very powerful & emotional. I can say with 100% certainty that you'd love it. Great reaction as always.
This song is not a love song, it refers to the break up of the singing group The Bee Gees. "How Can You Mend.." was never released a single by Stax Records, later in 1978 Vogue released it as a 45 rpm. This tune was written after a breakup of the Bee Gees. “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart”, originally released by The Bee Gees, was the lead single on the Bee Gees album Trafalgar. Primarily written by Barry and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, this song was the groups first U.S. number one hit! The song was written after a period of distance between the brothers. The writing of the song helped bring the brothers back together. Billboard ranked the track as No. 5 song for the year of 1971. Lyrically, the song is genius. Its central question about how to mend a broken heart is answered in one word never actually uttered by Robin Gibb: Love. Barry and Robin wrote the song as they were bringing the band back together after the Bee Gees had split up. It really is a song about the brothers and for the brothers but it reflects the universality of sorrow being vanquished by joy, the joy of love. This most human of truths will remain a constant as long as people live. Al Green's one and only number one hit was in 1972, Al Green went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with "Let's Stay Together," his only US chart topper.
Al's definitive version was never released as a single, but all who heard the classic " Let's Stay Together" album heard this deep album cut & played it often. After hearing Al's version - the Brother Gibbs would use the arrangement of Al & Genius Producer Willie Mitchell in their live shows for decades- until the untimely deaths of Robin & Maurice. Barry Gibb who co-wrote the song would change his lead vocals in future live shows after hearing this version. There's simply no better compliment than that. We used to say once Aretha or Al takes your song, there's really no getting it back.

So beautiful. This man man voice takes you through it...
The Reverend Al Green. If he was my preacher I'd be in church every day.

Check out his performance of 'Call Me' from The Midnight Special. There's also a Soul Train performance of 'Here I Am' that's a classic.
