Im a USC fan so I have no love lost for ucla, Stanford or CAL; however, stanford should be in the B1G for 2 reasons. First USC cant stomach the idea of calling it a win if its against an FCS team which is why its the only FBS team that has never played any FCS teams, it played Stanford in stead. More importantly itd be funny & gratifying to have 3 out of the 4 former California PAC12 schools in the B1G with CAL being the only one left out with nowhere to go

it would only be good for Notre Dame if Big 10 adds a few southern teams. At least 1 Florida and some Carolina teams (UNC, Clemson, NCSU). The fear of Notre Dame in joining the Big 10 for years would be sacrificing its "national brand" to become just another midwest team like Michigan. Michigan won the title this year and more power to them. For all the crap ND takes Michigan has been just as dormant if not more so than Notre Dame before last season. Ohio State has edge on Michigan big time in modern era, its not close. The reason I bring this up is because Ohio is actually a really good state for recruits and usually has a couple top 25 high school teams if not a top 5-10 ranked high school team every year. It's not Texas / Cali / Florida but its still really good where it can sustain an elite program especially OSU. Michigan is behind Ohio but still decent and still ahead of Indiana. Notre Dame relies on it's national brand and it's exposure in the Southeast to recruit places like Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina etc. Notre Dame whole reason for the ACC partial deal from a football standpoint is to get exposure in Southeast. The Big 10 as currently constructed does not offer that. If the Big 10 adds FSU, Miami, Georgia Tech, UNC or something like that then its a whole different ballgame.

It just makes sense for FSU, Clemson, UNC, etc to be out before June 30th. Thirdly I loved the reply comment to mine about how someone thinks Nebraska hates being in the B1G. Which is why the university has a goal to restore their AAU status and the new AD we have was brought in with football chops to specifically be a leading voice in B1G rooms and NCAA rooms he is already a part of. Lastly Husker baseball is 19-5 as of right now, so I feel your excitement for the Noles baseball now. I for one hope for a good rivalry in the future for all sports between the two schools!

You might have a better recollection than I do, but I don't really think that's fair to ND. The original Big East was a basketball first conference (Dave Gavitt's original vision) that tried to play football too late in the game and didn't have enough brands to pull it off. I don't think ND would have saved them.
Fans of most ACC schools, I feel sorry for, but not the conference itself. What goes around, comes around. They were more than happy to raid the Big East and now they're mad that it's happening to them. There are still salty people that cry about uconn suing back then, but now they are giving Phillips the old "atta boy" because they know their mid schools are gonna be G5 pretty soon, themselves. (I'm looking at you, BC! 😂). Circumstances are little different with the contracts involved, but it's the same principle. Once you lose your biggest football brands, you're G5.

I am so sick of hearing about ND and the Big 10. The Big 10 will be fine without them. The truth is the Big 10 added two excellent football teams in Oregon and USC, plus two very good ones in UCLA and Washington ( both of which brings great academics and research $ ( in fact, UCLA brings more research $ then any school in America except MIT)). Besides those four they might add FSU ( and others) as well. Let ND stay in the ACC with Boston College and Wake Forest, Big 10 does not need them.

Regardless of whom one supports, having more competitive games shouldn't be too much to ask for. That is why I wanted to see Notre Dame either go full time ACC or join the B1G that way there would be more meaningful games on schedule.
Now granted, I am more of a college basketball fan than I ever was college football prior to the CFP implementation. My concern was always how this would affect the ACC basketball schools. A lot of those with the football-centric mindset doesn't pay much regard to Duke-UNC and its significance the last two generations. Losing those on-campus conference games will be nothing less than tragic if UNC goes anywhere by themselves, hence all the commotion from NC State.
I suspect before long since ESPN is still a partner, they would find a way to merge a few ACC schools with the SEC so they would at least maintain TV rights. My guesses are UNC, Clemson, and UVA get full shares in SEC while Duke, NCST, and VTech obtain reduced SEC payouts with performance initiatives.

Means more games to sell to NBC and more potential marquee matchups with prime ad rates and ticket prices. Let them schedule 6 conference games and 6 OOC matchups. Plenty of room for FSU and Clemson to rock our world with 2 or 3 more major games and it cuts out the nooners at wake forest and boston college for at least 3:30 kicks in Louisville or a primetime TNF matchup in Blacksburg.

One problem is FSU is acting like the GOR is with some boogie man rather than the GOR being an agreement between 14 or 15 teams. So, FSU really has a deal with BC, Cuse etc. GOR will have to be a separate issue and until that one is solved, probably in federal court as it involves a Class of 14/15 in something like 9 states.
Once that is solved, then the claims that the ACC did not do whatever can go forward. But the idea that FSU or anyone can get out free with a reason being the ACC did not keep pace with the SEC/Big 10 is a non starter.

11:01 I think it almost makes more sense to “ding” schools that have been taking in full shares as current members, yet choosing NOT to spend an agreed-upon portion on football. But to say a newly-invited school should take a permanent cut as punishment makes no sense - if you have had a crappy tv deal, you can’t be expected to spend like B10/SEC. Why not consider giving them full share to start, with commitments to invest? I know SU would LOVE to have B10 money to bring us back up to our previous heyday, along with all the investments they have already been making in facilitiies projects lately, and the renewed commitment to the program by Coach Fran Brown. The ACC needed ND to get the bump in pay, keep bowl access, and keep Clemson and FSU from leaving for the Big 12 in 2013. ND should have never been given a full vote for only five games and a weak conference agreement that can be easily voided by ND. Now, if the ACC survives, these lesser schools will spend most of their budgets on travel to California. Playing ND once every three years in football won't cover that.
As a Nole, I'm actually excited to see how badly the Irish treat the ACC schools. My guess is when the Noles leave they will rewrite the bowl agreement and revenue sharing to be even more favorable to ND. ND can probably pull one of those two ACC CFP bids for themselves. ESPN will do anything to keep ND off of Fox. I think ND is actually happy making about 88 million with the ACC deal, the NBC deal and the CFP money. The ACC will be so weak, I'm sure the TV networks would lobby to make one ACC auto bid open to a top 25 ND team. They think FSU was greedy and abusive wait til they meet their Irish overlords 😂😂😂

Academics are important to the B1G because their research money far outweighs their sports revenue. Its why they go after big state funded institutions with high academics. They would never do something athletic revenue wise that would cause Illinois or Northwestern to leave the conference. If they did they would lose access to the teaching hospitals and research grants in Chicago. Note that U of Chicago (which left the conference athletically long ago) is still part of the research part as is John Hopkins. That's why when you look at adds, you need to look at AAU and who will help research grants. Getting into Florida not only helps athletics, it helps research. B1G affiliated schools make up 28% of the AAU. The B1G sponsored Miami in and they would sponsor FSU too. The B1G also really wants into the NC research triangle. That's why they wouldn't let NC go without a fight. As far as ND goes, there are as many nay sayers in the conference as voters for. ND tried to get NW and PSU to go to the ACC years back, which is why B1G went after Maryland, Virginia, and NC then. VA and NC are probably kicking themselves now.

Notre Dame fan here. It wont backfire on Notre Dame because Notre Dame is still a top 10 brand (if not higher) in college football. They have the NBC deal which buys them time and allows them to see how the landscape changes. Notre Dame has the leverage where there will almost always be a spot for them in any conference they want. Due to this i think its in ND self interests not to join a conference now. Why join the Big 10 and they maybe the Big 10 doesn't get the Southern teams (FSU, Miami, UNC etc) that Notre Dame wants them to pick up. If the ACC survives ND can stand pat, if Big 12 is able to get teams like Miami and NC State then ND might be able to get a "partial" deal with Big 12 just like it currently does with ACC. If Big 10 does destroy ACC and picks up 4+ big southern brands and Big 12 only gets leftovers like Pitt and Louisville then ND might be "forced" to join the Big 10 at that point. But Big 10 would still take ND and the SEC and Big 12 would still take ND too even if they have 22/24 schools they wouldn't turn down ND. So ND best move right now is to see how this plays out and I do NOT see that as a gamble in any way.

The ACC should have forced their hand, yes. It's been 7 years, you've had your fun, join or leave. We'll let you play 2020, but you must pay 75m and leave if you don't want to join.
Alternatively, the ACC could have instead offered FSU/CU (and perhaps Miami/UNC) the ND deal. Partial membership, scheduling deal, semi-pretend "independence" and the right to sell their home games.

    • @tomdemay6147

would have been very hard to force ND hand. Covid was only real shot at that. They should have gave FSU / CU the ND deal as you say, they should have done unequal revenue distribution and told teams like Wake Forest to kick rocks. Now Wake Forest can look forward to being in the new Big East football conference with UConn, Syracuse, Boston College etc. People overlook how much money ACC made from ND partial deal. If ACC tried to force ND hand and ND left conference ACC would just implode quicker. ND brings in more revenue to the ACC than it takes. Some of the ACC highest rated TV games last year were ND games (Duke, Louisville and Clemson). Two of these were primetime ACC TV games which bring in the big money. The one that wasn't was in a down year for Clemson and still brought in huge ratings for the conference.

ND has only made better deals for themselves and its not ND's fault it's the ACC and it's incompetent Leadership. This has bought us to where we are today. I don’t believe that schools who invest more, should get more of the pie. I do however believe that schools who achieve more, should get money. There should be 3 tiers in the B1G. Top 5,one rate. 6-12 another rate. 13-last the lowest rate. This compensation rewards excellence, not quite monetary investment, but it does obviously “usually” go hand in hand. There has been the occasional NW,that has risen past its supposed pecking order. When that anomaly happens, their bag should be filled.

Now, the teams who invest more, can afford better players and will win more going forward. You aren’t going to have situations where scrappy teams investing 1/2 as much compete. Those games are now going to become like top tier division 1 vs division 2. Ohio State vs Rice.

That means 9-11 will be screwed. All the teams joined the ACC willingly. The last 3 were the best on the board. FSU and others who want to leave should pay what is owed whther it is 100M or 400M.
Big12 eating doesnt help them. They are adding equal level. Hope only 4-6 teams leave and the ACC remain viable.
FSU fans suggesting that the conference be dissolved dont care that most schools will get screwed. FSU SHOULD DO THEIR OWN THING..... And not suggest other schools try and leave resulting in them having no home.

The idea that the rest of us then get to keep the current media deal through 2036 is not a thing. Why on earth would we “play nice” with schools leaving who end up destroying our programs in their wake? You talk about who is investing and who isn’t, but how can you be expected to invest on a competitive level when your tv deals aren’t paying as much? If the AFC & NFC had wildly different media rights and no salary cap, you would see the same thing happen in the NFL.

Who signs a contract that last 20 years without locking down competitive rate guarantees. The people who ran the ACC (Swafford) are directly to blame for where we currently are. EXACTLY! So why are our programs all trashed for “you don’t spend like other schools do”, when our tv contracts don’t allow us to? It’s not our fault. I DO blame the ACC for making stupid financial negotiations on our behalf. If the tv rights were roughly equal across conferences, so would the product on the field - at least for schools that WANT it to be, and I put SU in that category. We just need the infusion of money to build on what we’ve been able to fund raise to do. It makes me so mad how Vandy and Northwestern, etc actually DO get those funds, and don’t seem to care how privileged they are to have been “grandfathered in” to the P2.
