My great grandfather flew one of these beasts. We still have one of the prop blades as an heirloom
That is awesome... My father was in a TBM Avenger. Have his flight 'cap' Just bought this kit yesterday.
My favorite plane from WWII, beautiful job. My mom lived through the Blitz in London, she said these planes were the heroes of the war!
They are beauties.
My cousin, Jock Patton flew a Spit V, 'YO J' with 401 Sqn, RCAF out of Biggin Hill.....he was lost off Le Havre June 2nd, 42, Age 20....Bless em' all.
Spitfires got the glory, but Hurricanes did the majority of the work.
@@kudukilla That's only partially true: Hurricanes downed more enemy planes than Spitfires during the Battle of Britain, but they were usually sent after enemy bombers, while the Spitfires targeted the far more dangerous fighters.
Beautiful bird Beautiful kit👍
This is a fine example of Tamiya's EXCELLENT engineering.
you make it look easy - nicely done
You make it look easy.
I was completely amazed by just how good the fit really is
I never thought I would see the day that Andy paints a figure. Great build, man.
Thanks for posting!🙂
Tamiya has taken their engineering to another level, the other manufacturers need to step it up
beautiful kit of a beautiful aircraft! Great for "out of the box" competitions.
Engineering is good I will give it that, but just seems like a boring build.
@@ApriliaRSV4F it’s not boring, I built this model and I had a lot of fun. If you want a big and a crap ton of parts models, go with academy. But don’t expect everything to fit as well as TAMIYA.
What amazes me is how Andy manages to complete a model in the short time it takes me to fall asleep at night
Love the paint job on this plane. You're the Van Gogh of scale model painting Andy.
Hi Andy, I'm only just rejoining the modeling ranks as a novice despite my age and so I am catching up with the experts videos. I have this kit but since I am trying to bring an airfix "Spit" that I ruined to some degree of splendour, I won't touch the Tamiya until I'm more confident. However regarding your thoughts on the camouflage detailing, the British Air Ministry code 1939 - 45 stated that the edges should merge and not form a rigid line. So you you were quite right to do it "your way". Fantastic result, sir.
The first model I ever made was a Supermarine Spitfire Mk1a in 1:72 scale, this Tamiya kit looks great and on my ‘to do’ list.
Dear Santa:
Please.
Thanks!
Another great build and review at the same time. As per the hard line vs softlines on the camo you can be right either way. For every picture of a Spit (or Hurricane) with soft demarcation lines you can find one with hard lines.
Thanks to your channel, I also have the Meng Panther on the way too. Love how casual your channel is and informative at the same time.
The No Step lines shouldn't go all the way to the wingtips like that. Nice job it looks awesome.
I just picked up two of these Spits. I will build two MK 1 one MK 5 two MK IX in 1/48 with famous aces. Thanks for the insights and tips.
Man I wish every ww2 fighter model had this landing gear design
Top notch Andy....super.
Tamiya has excelled themselves what a model fantastic
As you say this looks a superb kit, so I'll have to get one. The fit of the parts is amazing. I think the Spitfire is a good model to do an open canopy because it also has a small door on the left fuselage side so a lot of the cockpit detail should be visible. It would be great if someone did a resin engine kit for it too.
Awesome, I have this on preorder so will be watching this quite a few times :D
you will love it great fit and finish
@Dan Harris I used Lucky Model, they had a 20% off coupon so it ended up being less than $30us inc shipping. code was LUCKY20
@@AndysHobbyHeadquarters the engineering alone should please any builder as it did you. Great job and good tips too, like the "double flat coats", to prevent possible disaster with decals near end of your project!!
Excellent, I'm a plane guy, like the armour you do but still a plane guy and I am pleased you followed u so quickly with this build. WW2 aircraft are super.
Absolutely beautiful Andy. As always the highlight of my week watching your new videos! Tamiya have really stepped up their game, which is scary considering they were already better than everyone else to begin with! Simply cannot beat a Tamiya kit in my opinion. Would love it if they did a new Fw190 in this scale too!
Tamiya really doing some nice work with the new tooled kits
I believe the round PE and plastic part you added to the firewall in the cockpit at the beginning of this video is the projector for the HUD! It should be clear of the instrument panel so it can illuminate the HUD glass with the aiming pipper! Oh yeah! Great 👍🏼 build!!!
Very nice
So excited to see Tamiya re-doing the Spitfire in 1/48!!! Great attention to detail, excellent fit and finish - it appears Tamiya have outdone themselves!!! Great job Andy 👍
Beautiful Spitfire! The engineering of some of these new models is really incredible. I'll definitely be adding this Spit to my collection. Thanks for another great video.
Good job Andy, hehe - the womens makeup sections are a gold mine for modelling tools!
Nice build and I am glad to see you painted the figure :) and I think he looks just fine
This looks like a superb kit, and will make a nice base for my Spitfire PR.I Type F project!
That is one beautiful bird. I remember a build I saw on a B-17 where the builder put streak marks behind the engines showing where the exhaust left marks on the wings. I would love to have seen similar marks behind the exhaust on this one.
Beautiful work, Andy. Top notch for sure.
Thanks for the build Andy. Those controls surfaces are ailerons not flaps. The split flaps are under the wing near the fuselage. ;)
Just Amazing. I was going to pick one of these up but went with a few different models instead. Right now I just started a Tamiya Mitsubishi Zero Zeke. Kind of glad I didn't this seems way more advanced than the one I'm working on...fit and finish may be better but there seems to be steps for the much advanced builders.
I have limited experience with only building pretty basic Gundam models as a kid. These models are on another level!
I'm not trying to put my heart and soul in to this first one knowing I'll only be let down because this is obviously something that comes with time and practice. So I'm just using brushes with enamel paint. Half-assing the paint....it's already somewhat overwhelming so I don't want to get discouraged going crazy over the exact correct paint colors.... I want to just enjoy building and finishing it whether or not it looks half-assed lol
TL;DR
1. How in the world does one paint such fine details on a figure?
2. What is this metallic powder called? I can't seem to find it on ebay.
3. How does one make the plastic look like glass? Regular clear coat?
4. Are decal solutions really necessary? if so should I get the micro set and sol or tamiya's mark fit?
Thank you!
The way the RAF painted the camouflage on their aircraft was by laying large soft rubber matting on the aircraft in the shape of the camouflage patterns. It gave fairly crisp lines and it was easy to do. Masking them off with paper and tape wouldn’t have been feasible, large rubber matting worked just fine and the matting was just pulled off the airplane when the painting was done. I saw a photograph of brand new Mosquitos lined up and the camouflage pattern was exactly the same on every one of them. As for you just getting really fine lines with your airbrush, it looks terrific just like everything else you do so masking it off wasn’t necessary.
Really like the way you assembled cockpit. Also, it looks superb after painting
A fab model of the best fighter plane in the world.
Thank you Andy for building a plane. Very refreshing. Great job as always. Muchas gracias amigo!!
What a great kit!!!! The Mk I is so iconic!!! Great build Andy!!!
That wing root fit! They're killing the hobby!!!
Mishn0 I haven't got this kit yet is there something wrong with the wing root ? Bruce
@@brucerobinson7295 It's an old joke on Hyperscale. The fit looks so good and automatic it takes no modeling skill to get a perfect wing root join. Thus, it's killing the hobby, so easy a caveman could do it. It started, I believe when Mike Grant produced a sheet of decals for WWII Italian "smoke ring" camouflage. It eliminated the need for hours and hours of careful airbrush work to get a perfect camo job, thus, killing the hobby.
@@Mishn0 yeah the fit at the wing root is freaky amazing! As you know, that's a "make or break" area on most aircraft models... that have wings :P
Much nicer kit than the old Monogram series Spitfire. Great job Sir.
This is the sort of quality that we should be expecting from Airfix .... it’s a shame they don’t set the bar quite high enough. Shows you don’t need reams of plastic and resin. Lovely work and nice and accurate. Price seems a little high, but I suppose that the photo-etch and extras make it more than worthwhile.
Awesome kit!!
Great job, you really did it justice! I love the look of the Mk 1, the color scheme looks great.. Have been a fan of Tamiya for years, they have great detail and they fit together well. Cheers!
Thank you for all the good things you have done!
Thank you so much
Brilliant video Andy.
"I'll come back in a few minutes and show you how we do that with the decal"...."Okay guys I went ahead and finished the model" :P haha, classic.
I am getting ready to start mine
Maybe I should start buying Tamiya’s planes.. they look amazing
beautiful subject and build, nice work Andy
Thank you so much for sharing, what a fantastic build.
Awesome build
that was definitely sponge worthy
It’s a great kit buddy! Even the older Tamiya Spitfire kit was great 👍
15:15 just look at how near seamless that looks! I just ordered a kit for myself :)
Nice build Andy, thanks for your videos! Love them little Tamiya side cutters, have to get me a pair!
Loved the build and your channel andy i can't wait to see what you do next.
Looks great!
I have the old tool kit on the shelf, still looks excellent. Perhaps if I find a particularly interesting decal set I’ll buy this upgraded one as well.
The Spitfire is the coolest aircraft in history
Cough cough TA 152 H-1
That looks like an awesome kit! Bloody nice job Andy. Well done mate.
Another great video but man you make me feel like a slacker! Just finishing up a 1/35 Dragon Tiger I “Tiki” then 1/16 Hobby Boss Tiger I! Now because of this I’m going to finally build my 1/48 Tamiya Lancaster I! Cheers man
Nice job Andy!
thank you , it was a great kit
i love it man i built one my self
Fantastic vid, Andy,cheers
Your off the hook for Now! figure looks good m8
" you're " off the hook ...
yes looking good thare wil see more
Awesome as always! Wish you would do some 1/35 figures.
Legend has it that Andy has over 1,000 unused figures in his spares box ;-)
Realmente es un hermoso kit y un complicado y excelente trabajo el tuyo mi estimado amigo....
There are two contradictory points to remember about weathering, the ground crews were proud of 'their' aeroplane, and wanted to keep her clean when she went out flirting with Messershmitts, and conversely, the aeroplanes generally didn't last long enough to get really weathered and chipped!
Great job Andy, really cool 👍
Andy nice build as for the pilot as you saw the spitfire cockpit is very tight can you picture bailing out with all that flight gear on just made the list of kits to get thanks for the look lot of info on various parts have a nice day Bruce
I don't see why you hadn't done the open cockpit version, the details are amazing
As always, beautiful work Andy!!!
I think your lightness of touch with the weathering is historically accurate. A hell of a lot of MK1 spits got shot down and not many lasted long.
Which is not a really a very bad thing if you're building more planes than Germany and most of the pilots parachute down in England.
Great friendly video again Andy. Love your show here in the U.K,home of the Spit. Saw 10+ flying at the Duxford airshow recently.WOW,WOW and WOW!!! Even the movies cant emulate that Merlin growl and definately not the slipstream!!Great model work from you again Andy. Nice to see the gently weathering and not that 'statue@ finish some have when overdone. They were new once so nice to have a cleaner look too. What is it about the MK.1a. Im sure its not just my favourite. Got some V,s and a Mk.Xii by Airfix as they really have upped their game with the post 2009 New Tooling. This Tamiya has got somegreat moulding designs. It was refreshing after a nightmare build of an ICM Mk.iX. Their plastic is so soft and though copius amounts of detail, nothing goes together when build the engines and gun bays etc. Very refreshing watching you build this one after ive had to force myself to finish the ICM kit. Mr.Johnnie Johnson would have had something to say!!!! Keep up the good work Andy!
Any chance of you doing a video on weathering techniques for beginners? I've seen 2 so far but I'd like to see what you suggest
Also excellent built
You could have left the join line on the leading edge. On the real one it’s made upper and lower skins that meet on the leading edge , there is a strip riveted inside to hold the two skins together.
I like the Airfix Mk Ia way more.
A really nice kit and very well built and painted, it’s a pity that the kit manufacturer didn’t include the U/C down visual indicators located on the wings upper surface especially with all the photo etched parts, I’m assuming they came with the kit, included.
Nice job so far. One small point. Tamiya Sky Xf22 is NOT he same as RAF Sky type s. To get the proper tone and hue you should mix Xf22 with Xf1 flat white in 1 : 1.5 ratio. Ie 1 part Sky to 1 1/2 parts of flat white. Tamiya Sky is too dark and green otherwise.
That's a nice kit. Andy, find a comfy armchair or deckchair and sit the pilot in it, as if he's waiting to be scrambled.
Another great build done by Andy. I wonder when he starts the 1/16 Trumpeter Panther tank.
Andy, any chance of doing a future video of making a ruined building ?
possibly
The point of doing all the internal detail, that you cannot see, is to know that it is there! 😉
Would love to see a full interior build of Tiger tank or M1A2 Abrams

Nice build, keep up the good video's! Greetings from Holland!
Andy, I'm working on the kit. Have drilled out the 2 holes on the starboard side nose as indicated but what are they for?? Can't see anything in the instructions.
Never seen a model that needs a diorama,,, "MORE!",,, Dino.
Beauty Yank.
Beautiful kit. I would have preferred it with a detailed engine that is easily displayable by opening the hood. Instead Tamiya has chosen to provide a detailed cockpit, which is not displayable unless put “aside” the aircraft than “inside” it.
Nice tip, foam brushes.
Thats it im buying one.
you will love it.
Fantastic-looking build, Andy. Might make an aircraft man out of you yet. (On second thought, your armor builds would be missed, so I guess you're just gonna have to keep doing both!)
I have brought a second-hand Tamiya 74537 ( unremovable paint cup), this is my 1st time using airbrush and a Ustar air pump.
Great video....can't seem to find the video you refer to at the beginning about the sprues of the kit.
Cheers
John
I wanna get into building models my on stress is getting used to how mucth paint to use how mucth thinners and just getting used to it all in general seems like a hobby that's needs alot off practice
20:19 Andy, the early Spitfires were painted using masks. In real life, the separation line (the fuszzy transition ) was about half an inch wide. In scale 1/48 that fuzzy line would therefor be about 1/96th of an inch wide....... Impossible to do, even with the smallest airbrush !
That means, that on this model, in this scale, a hard line is the most authentic rendering.
I also noticed Tamiya made a mistake. Again..... They put a crow bar in the little hatch. It's not supposed to be there. The Mark V was the first one to have one on board.
And please....NEVER paint the crow bar red..!!! That did not become compulsory until early 1949.....!!! Most of the time they were cockpit green. Sometimes bare metal and occasionally matt black.
But the bottom line is : nice build, Andy !! Looks great.
Rivet counter🤔
Oh damn........ I forgot the rivets.........!!
I'll start counting them right away !
Thanks for the heads up ;-)
(..........but I *AM* right ! I did not lie ! ;-) )
Don't loose sleep
I've seen pictures of them painting P-40s and A-20s using big rubber masks. They set the wings up in a jig and them flop the masks down like curtains and spray over them. I haven't seen how they did the fuselages though.
I agree. A hard edge in 1/48.
Not masking the camo... brave man!
Those are Ailerons, not "flaps". The British did use masks, actually rubber mats they laid over the plane. I really like how you did the weathering AFTER decaling, I get annoyed with super-clean insignia on dirty aircraft. Really only needs exhaust and gun smoke stains, and I think you were going for a clean bird anyway. Nice job!
