Thanks, Don!!! My SH-55 starts fine. When I rev it up, it achieves full RPMs but then drops about 25%. If I trigger it a few times, it returns to full RPMs and then dies again. I checked the spark arrester screen and it's fine. I'll by a new carb. There's a Stihl dealer just down the street. Thanks again!!
I just finished doing the same thing to the exact leafblower i bought at a yard sale for $20. Old guy had it for a week it was still in box he said he used once went to use again and it wouldnt rev up replaced carb and runs awesome. Love the channel

Best advice on using oem replacement parts. The Chainsaw Guy told me the same thing when I just ended up replacing my friends carb on his Stihl weed eater. Your time is worth just fixing it once.
Thank you so much! I thought I was gonna have a take it in for servicing or purchase a new one. Now it runs stronger than ever! I just changed the spark plug and cleaned the spark arrestor which was totally clogged. Checked the air filter and it was still in good shape.
I'm not especially handyut was able to replace the carb on my BG55 Stihl following your well done directions. With a new spark plug and filter also added it runs better than the day I bought it in 2014.
Excellent video on Stihl carb replacement. DonyBoy was careful to mention the possibility of a clogged/fouled spark arrestor causing the motor to bod down. It will in fact, I've experienced that problem. thanks to his attention to detail!
Beautifully done sir. Very detailed. You saved me by identifying the screws. I was lost thought they were alike when I removed them. Thing wasn't lining up. Glad I found you. Thanks alot!
I've got the BG-50 that usually takes about 5 - 6 pulls to get it going, but after it's warmed up it's almost impossible to restart. It hasn't been an issue because once I get it going it runs well until the job's done. I am going to turn out the high and low speed screws a bit more to see if that improves starting both when cold and once it gets warm. Great machine regardless. Thanks Don.

@@proflondonuk Thanks, bud! It's a problem that existed even when the blower was new, which doesn't mean it can't still be the problem due to manufacturing irregularities, but I'm hoping it boils down a simple carb adjustment.

Milwaukee’s M12 Fuel ratchets would be very useful in your line of work. They have plenty of torque and are very well made/ well designed overall. I have the 3/8 drive myself and it works wonders. Let the machines do the leg work.
I will tell you one more thing that sometimes happens to these... you will here a zing and it will shut off... normally someone would think who put straight gas in this it’s now seized!!! But it sometimes turns out to be one of the three screws behind the fly wheel. One of them came too loose and blocked the wheel from spinning! Happened on two different stihls of mine. The bg86c I believe.
The customer will be happy :-D I remember your advice from a year or two back, cleaning doesn't always fix it so don't waste any more time, replace the carb with a new one, that is the fix. I think it was for a square chain saw carb, same nasty design i think.
I need your help. I own a Stihl BR380 that has very few hours of use. Last week (while running it full throttle for 25-30 minutes) it started to bog down. I dropped the throttle back to idle and it ran perfectly. I increased back to full throttle and after a few seconds it did the same thing. I verified the spark arrestor was clean, verified the air filter was clean, verified the gas filter was clean, replaced the spark plug (old one looked normal), also when it started losing RPM I took off the gas tank cap to see if that would help. I am at a loss. When cold, it starts up like it always has. Couple of pulls. I use only nonethanol fuel and Bel-Ray full synthetic 2-stroke oil. Your thoughts? Any suggestion(s) will be greatly appreciated.
Did you check, replace the fuel filter before going with the carb? My own experience is I clean the spark arrestor about three times to fix a bog down issue, then the fourth time it’s the fuel filter.
So many carb problems on expensive equipment it seems. My strimmer, hedgecutter and a blower were bought in 1990. Never touched the carbs always start easy and run well. Original air and fuel filters too. All I do is run them dry before winter shutdown. ..?
Cherish your older gear! Newer models have been tampered with by the EPA here in the states. The default carb settings are for emissions, not performance, and they require the manufacturer to place a block on the adjustment screws of the carb. After 25 years, I finally have to rebuild my Echo's SRM-2400's carb. It doesn't owe me a thing. If rebuilding it doesn't work, I'm going to buy an OEM carb. Can't beat that old gear!
any idea why leaf blowers are so prone to failure? I typically get 1-3 seasons with a leaf blower before it seems to be unfixable (I've tried everything other than a full carb replacement) whereas I get 10+ years problem free with string trimmers, edgers, and other gas powered stuff just by changing spark plug annually. I do run ethanol free gas whenever I can.
i had a similar problem with my stihl leaf blower. i torched the spark arrestor clean. same problem. i cleaned the air filter. same problem. i boughtt a stihl maintenance kit for it. i replaced the air filter. voila! all is good.

Don, I salvaged a 2001 Ryobi 31cc leaf blower - another victim of ethanol poisoning. It starts and runs fine, but it doesn't seem push leaves very well. It does better with the nozzle removed. Is this normal for these small hand-held units? The exhaust is clear, and the piston and cylinder look great. I can get more done with a bamboo rake. This my first experience with a gas leaf blower.
I have the exact same one. I may end up replacing the carburetor on mine also. It runs best partially choked so I think the diaphragm may be getting weak.
