    This happened to me last summer. My Stihl leaf blower would not rev. So I searched RUclips and Steve's Small Engine Saloon popped up with the cure. Spark arrestor. 10 minutes and a half a beer later it was fixed. That was also the day I subscribed and have enjoyed your videos every since. Thanks Steve

    Thanks a ton again. I have heard others having this issue. So simple, who knew. My brothers weed eater had this happen,
    Solvent and wire brush cleaned the screen. Runs again.

    I've used the butane torch to clean spark arrestors with good results. Bit like a DPF regen on your diesel car. Dave out!

    Yes. This video needs to be seen by so many people. The spark arrester screen is to blame when people come to me about this. I just hold it with pliers in front of a propane torch until orange, then tap away the ash and reassemble when it's cool enough to touch. Works wonders. BUT, why does this almost always happen with leaf blowers and only rarely with other 2-cycle tools? I don't know the answer to that.

    My old moped does this sometimes. Gotta yank the exhaust and hang it from a wire, then hit it with a torch until it glows and starts burning like a little jet engine. Works every time.

    First, thank you for the great information. Having said that, how are we supposed to fix things correctly if we don’t know what beer to drink while we’re fixing things? Some guidance on the proper beer would be most appreciated. Keep up the good videos!

    I always start with the Screen first brother because it is the easiest in my opinion! And then go from there! If it's not the screen! Great video Steve and April! Have a great rest of your week!

    Picked up a Stihl FS280K back in the eighties. The machine has a lot of hours on it. It ran like a champ for many years until I began to notice that it was becoming more difficult to start. About four years ago I used it to clear a large area of brush. It literally took about an hour to get it running. I did everything I could think of to get it started. It finally did and actually ran fine but when I shut it down it was a chore to get started again. Research time.... I came across a YT channel that talked about the screen (spark arrester) in the exhaust. I checked the one on my machine and it was almost completely blocked. I cleaned it thoroughly and now it starts like it did when it was new. Except for cleaning the screen and periodically installing a new spark plug, the machine has never been serviced. It's an absolute tank!!

    Ok, I read some comments, all good, people talking about not removing spark arrester, soaking the muffler in gas, and there’s replacing the muffler as Steve mentioned. Living in Texas maybe I should consider cleaning. I did see a guy clean a rusty fuel tank by filling it with nuts and bolts and mounting it to a cement mixer, maybe I could use bbs and some gas and shake real good. if it comes down to it I’ll try to find new muffler. Thanks again Steve, show was a big help.

    just a home owner with a couple saws for clearing fallen or dead trees and a brushsaw and trimmer. But at least once a year (winterizing the trimmer and brush saw) I take the screen out and burn the carbon off. it amazes me how much they can be plugged and the engine still run fairly good.

    The biggest problem I’ve run into is the mufflers spark arrestor being clogged up with carbon. I would recommend checking that first before adjusting the carb

    I’d check the piston exhaust port as well. I’ve had two of my small engines get almost fully sealed up there

    I discovered a fouled spark arrestor screen was the issue with my BG56 a few years ago after loaning it to a neighbour. He must have used 30 wt at 20:1 judging by the gas colour. An easy fix to clean carbon off screen with a torch but thankful it had too much vs too little. No more loaning after that!

    Steve, had a brand new Stihl 550 leafblower that had that exact problem after 4 months of perfect use. Took it in to the Stihl shop and it needed a new carb! It came with a bad one but warranty only covered the labor. Said the carb looked like it may have had water in the mix. altho I only used premixed 40:1 Stihl fuel mix. $150 later, all fixed.😭

    if you take a blowtorch to the spark arrestor and then hit it with a wire brush it seems to work. worked for me on the same blower in this video.

    Thanks for the video guys. Mine turn out to be a clogged fuel filter. Needed compressed air to clean it. It would shut-off after a few seconds when reving it up

    You are very helpful. However, I would not remove the spark arrester. If you have not had much rain recently, you may end up calling the fire department to help you out of a jam. A spark or ember coming out of the exhaust can start a fire! I would bet that you thought of that as soon as you got done.

    Just working on a Makita blower. 4cycle...bogs when throttle applied.
    Pulled apart arb and saw choke.lever with a missing tooth.
    Started fine but try to take choke off and with missing tooth on lever was staying half choked and not reving up. Waiting for part to arrive to see if that fixes it.

    Something I learned Steve and I'm curious if you agree. The 2 cycle gas in a container that hardware stores sell that's premixed is not good. I noticed immediately that the rpms were reduced instantly. I have gone back to mixing my own with no more problems. 50:1. Right? Love your videos.

    Hey Steve, I'm not much a leaf blower fan .. I had a neighbor that used to run that thing at least 4-6 hrs, every day, I kid you not. Fortunately they eventually moved, "small favors" and all that!
    Most internal combustion engines don't effect me that way ... it's just that 2-cycle leaf blower constant whine that drills right through ya. LOL. Guess maybe I'm more of a 4-stroke guy. Chainsaws I can appreciate, except for the other neighbor who starts his and runs it at full throttle right off the bat then wonders why it doesn't work well, especially without ever being sharpened. I feel sorry for a lot of machines.

    Cracked fuel line will do that too. When you hit the throttle it sucks in air, making it bog.

    Great video , on my other chain saw when this happens i find that i dump the gas and put fresh mixed gas works well
    Can you answer this question how long does mixed gas last . i always use super gas when mixing but it seems when ever i leave it in chainsaw for more then a couple months its no more good

    That happened to me on my chainsaw. I watched your video on this subject and wouldn't ya know that screen was clogged. A gas soaking cleared it up and it's been running great since. Thanks Steve.

      I clean mine with a propane torch. It only takes a minute to burn the carbon off and brush off any remaining residue.

    Sorry Steve, I always check that screen first when it runs fine at idle and then bogs during engine speed increase.
    That screen has burnt me too many times to keep falling for the adjust the carb thought that comes to mind first.

    stihl bg 55 leaf blower. hard start sometimes won't start. good spark, compression 105- 110 psi . the spark screen is clean in the muffler. exhaust port clean. spark plug is wet after trying to start it. fly wheel magnet line up with coil as the piston is coming to tdc. any other thought?

    Either the carburetor is adjusted to lean or the spark arrestor screen in your muffler is clogged

    Adjustments to carb is almost the last thing to do when this occurs. Gas, if you have just filled with new mix, filters and screens, supply line from tank degraded and softened so that it collapses, then try adjusting the carb!

    My BG55 has bogged down with a trigger pull, at least until it's warmed up for 2+ minutes, since brand new. Have had the carb adjusted every which way and it's never made a difference. Nothing's clogged either. But, let it idle for 2 or so minutes and it's ready to rip.

    Clogged exhaust is more likely the issue and should be addressed before adjusting the carb.

    Yes it can be several different things causing it to bog out. I subscribe to go straight to the carb because it is the easiest to do. A turn and a half out on high speed and low speed then go from there. If you were to “get lost” meaning you dont know how far out or in an adjustment screw was when you started…. A turn and a half out from lightly seated.

    Sometime the fuel can be the problem. Gas attracts water, so if your unit has been setting awhile put fresh gas in it.

    For me it’s always been the muffler screen. I remove it but I live in the southwest so leaves catching fire is pretty much a non issue. Either way Steve’s videos will help you get the problem solved.

    Are the Carbs set at factory for CA or a certain elevation? Had this issue and resolved with half a turn

      That depends on the brand. Some of them will adjust them differently at the factory depending on where they're shipping them (for example, Ryobi sometimes does this, and you'll get a different mfg number depending on what elevation market it's designed for), but some of them use a standardized adjustment.

    First thing I do when buying a new piece of equipment is if the muffler has a screen on it . TAKE IT OFF AND THROW IT AWAY!!! Engine will run better and a lot less problems in the future!! 👍

    What if the arrestor screen is clean, inside muffler looks clean, and the carb looks clean aswell?? Ive checked gas lines too, also it seems to want to run on half choke but then bogs out when i flip it over to run an hit the gas.. ?? Can anyone help? I need this blower for my day to day business!!

    If cleaning or replacing the spark arrestor screen and adjusting the carburetor doesn't fix it, it could be a fuel delivery problem. I'd start by replacing the fuel filter - a clogged fuel filter can allow enough fuel through to idle, but not have enough flow while it's at higher RPM's. If that doesn't fix it, in my experience it's almost always hard carburetor diaphragms. If either of these work, you'll probably need to go back and adjust it again.

    My blower would bog out when you tried to rev it, but would rev fine if you flicked the choke on then off again.
    It was crap in the carb.

    charge the battery.
    and if your spark arrester screen is fouled, you need to not wander around with it idling so much. if it's not singing, it's not happy.

    Steve - I have also run into a plugged fuel tank, weighted filter as a recurring problem. Usually will run OK if you give it a little choke even when warmed up but will not achieve full rpm. Especially if you get it from an unknown or someone who runs ethanol contaminated fuel. Cheers

    ...my older Ryobi weedeater does this...but it's a 4-stroke. I can't find any info that a spark arrester is used on one of these...
    Any input on this???...and what beer should be used???

      Spark arrestors are required on all small engines.
      That said, the spark arrestor usually clogs up on 2-cycle engines when they're run at lower RPM because the oil doesn't fully burn up in the cylinder. I wouldn't expect a 4-cycle engine to have a problem with the spark arrestor screen unless it also has other problems, such as worn rings.

    I have always found that its been the diaphragm, it goes stiff and doesn't meter the fuel properly

    And another thing is, never try to use a blower without the tunes in place. I have seen some people do it because they took them off to store it and forgot where they put them, so they used it without it and over reved the engine and blew it up.

      2-cycle engines don't really have "heads", just a cylinder with three holes in it for intake, exhaust, and spark plugs, so even if the bolts holding the cylinder assembly on got loose, I'd expect the rings to still hold pressure. I've never seen that problem with 2-cycle engines.
      For 4-cycle leaf blowers, that could be a potential problem, but it would be pretty far down the list of things to check. That said, most of the 4-cycle engines I've seen that are that small didn't really have a separable head either - the head is machined directly into the top of the cylinder assembly, so they don't have head bolts either.

      Yes but it will run lean and drastically shorten the life span of the engine.
