Less PAR doesn't mean it has less photosynthetically usable radiation(PUR). The new led technology is getting better every year by leveraging more PUR vs PAR,this saves energy and the emitters last longer. Light and Redox are my personal specialty you could say and because I maintain a few mixed reef tanks for clients I really had to step up my game in understanding led technology and how to use it properly. I would use this light if I could see the spectral output, to me that's just as important as using PAR to determine whether this light would do the job.

48tomw would this lamp maintain high light demanding plants like dwarf hair grass, glossostigma, hc Cuba or baby tears? That’s what I’m really interested in. Would you know if it’s going to be enough?

I have a 40 gallon tank with 1 goldfish, 4 black skirt tetra, 3 cory catfish and 2 platy's (started with 5 a few years ago, now I am down to two :(. I plan to get more, and 1 mystery snail. I have java fern and marimo moss balls for plants. Your new favorite light looks cool but way too techy for me at this point. Maybe one day....:)

Dedicated blue and white LEDs are just brighter than red or green... When you expand the spectrum there is a trade-off in brightness... More control and a wider fuller spectrum is going to be a bit dimmer unless the are just adding LEDs vs replacing them.

It is improved over the 2.0 in almost every way except the temperature. It runs extremely hot. Like 120 degrees Fahrenheit hot. They should have used the 2.0 casing with fins which runs much cooler. Using it on a dart frog vivarium I had to raise it off the tank because it was increasing the temp too much in viv.

    • @GAMINGMATRIXXX

Unbiased review this app that looks so cool in the video sucks big time. If you look at the app reviews for the app itself it is pathetic and unreliable can be. I have had it on my tank for 2 days and had to reinstall uninstall the app 4 times now. My experience with the light is super not impressed and am looking to see if I can circumvent the beyond crappy app that works 20 percent of the time. All this cool bluetooth and wifi is awesome when it works when it doesn't it makes you feel you just bought a 175 dollar paperweight. Even if the app wasn't a piece of crap it has major limitations look at the app reviews before you buy this light I wish I would have.

What depth was the par sensor at bellow the water level?
Also, the one thing missing from all the lights is optional optics kits. This would allow us to hang the lights higher above the tank and focus the light down. The 120 degree spread casts the light onto the glass causing algea growth on the glass. The use of optics would also increase par where we actually need it

So... a while back, I got me a 36 bowfront and bought a cheap 36" Nicrew Classic LED Plus Planted for it.
But recently picked up a 55 gallon for a steal, so I needed to decide which light to get for my plants and all... I looked at all of them (Nicrew, Beamswork, Finnex, VivaGrow, Fluval, etc.) and didn't really want to spend much money. Less than $100 really. But I bit the bullet and just went with the Fluval 3.0 - 48 - 60. Ordered from Cory, for $210. It arrived in a couple days. I placed it over my 36 bowfront for comparison.... my fish and plants have been living in the shade all this time! :)
The price hurts, but it's probably worth it in the end.

I believe you said any ios or android phone; but I'm guessing the latest Apple iPads are fine as well. This light solves so many problems - no more having multiple lights come on at different times to simulate my idea of dawn and dusk. Now the only decision is whether to get two 3-foot ones for a low light plants 180 or one 4-footer....

I feel like with the extra height and front to back depth, I'd go with 6 ft of lighting. I find I can get by with 4 ft on 125s, but really miss 6 ft on 180g

Thank you for all the information. Your videos are great. I have a 125 (72”) tank that is going to have fish and some plants (more fish that plants). What size Plant 3.0 light should I get for that tank and how many do you recommend? Should I get multiple smaller lights, one big light? One big and one small? Thank you for your help in advance.

Cory, if you have any juice with Fluval, get them to make a 30 inch led, and bigger sizes than the 48.

Great video Cory, thanks. I bought the light before I saw your review through a small speciality fish store where I live. Unfortunately, like so many others, they have now closed.
Has anyone had an issue with this light (which I love) heating up their tanks! I have the 48" on my 50 gallon acrylic tank and it consistently runs 78°F or higher. Ambient room temp is 73° and tank is unheated. I raised the lights up by 2" but no effect. This is at upper temp range that my fish prefer. The light is not to the touch.

Well all lighting will heat up water some. But even filters etc add heat. Something like a fx5 is equivalent to running a 50 watt heater 24x7.

    Cory,
Can we see par numbers for Finnex Monster Ray, Finnex vivid, fluval fresh, marine and plant all compared on the same tank in one video? Also go over the difference between this plant light and fluval marine light and fresh light. Im very confused as to which one to buy.

This new light does everything as advertised and the app blows away the WIFI module that I had use with the 2.0. It's a slimmer light and the On/Off button has a third function and that when it's set to green shows the WIFI is activated. Not necessary with the app because the app allows you to control EVERYTHING! Very nice light and definitely worth every penny.

Why did they go from WiFi to Bluetooth, seems like going backwards?

I'm new to the hobby and I'm looking at getting a Fluval as I want my tank to be quite heavily planted... I was just wondering why the Fluval 2.0 is deemed as being quite bad? I was looking at the 2.0 mainly because of cost!

Have you done well with this setup? Got 120, and considering 2 of these. I know you can grow like dwarf baby tears with low light and co2 , this talk about you need high light is pure BS. Just need to know coverage and what you think of it on such a big tank ?! 🙂

I just got mine from Aquarium Co-op. The light is good, but the newest version of the app is completely broken. I can't get a bluetooth connection 75% of the time. When I do get connected, I'm unable to export any settings to the light (although I can control it in manual mode...so I know I'm connecting to the device). I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app a half dozen times and wasted around 5 hours trying, unsuccessfully, to resolve the issue. To make things worse, the app doesn't have an instruction manual, and the only documentation I've been able to find online is unhelpful at best. I'm not the only one. Look at all the recent 1-star reviews in the app store. I have a $130 light with the functionality of a $30 light.

I have this light. Got it pre-owned at my LFS for $50. Love it. It's has really made my pink flamingo crypts and Red Reineckii pop with color. Took a while to figure out that there is not specific time for the daytime setting as it is just the end of sunrise and the beginning of sunset. That just did not sink in at first. Maybe you explained it, but I was so fascinated by nerdy app stuff that I missed it.

Interesting light. All I’d like out of a light personally is one with a soft ramp on, ramp off to avoid photo shock. Then a manual timer can have two photo periods during the day. That said, they’re clearly responding to market demands, so fair enough.
For the podcast, could you emphasize which ones are podcast only a little more? Then it’s easier to tell which ones I might not have listed to on RUclips already.
    Good stuff, and useful vid.
