Dear Travel Channel, you may want to take a look at these two.
Aw, shucks.
Great guide and quite enjoyable “chatting” with you two. Thanks for traveling for us!
This was an excellent and fun way to wrap up your journey. I agree that often the best experiences can be had away from the crowds at less-visited sites.
My husband proposed to me on top of Ek-Balam ruins. Therefore it will always be #1 on my list :)
Fantastic!
Nice share I like you got the same top one together
Next time Tikal, Palenque and Copan ..;))
Thank You
best regards
I've been a subscriber to this channel for months, but somehow just now ran across this video -- fun! A tip for folks visiting Chichen Itza -- many of the tour busses that drop off the throngs of visitors are connected with cruise ship shore excursions (so their schedule is built around a long drive to / from Cancun). The simplest way to avoid crowds is by working around their mid-day onslaught -- get to the site when it opens in the morning, leave when the crowds show up (good time to see Ek Balam), return in early afternoon and stay to closing. I'll also note that Palenque and Tikal are two amazing sites for folks to see, and they aren't (yet) too crowded. I've got my fingers crossed that the under-construction "Tren Maya" will spread visitors around enough to somewhat alleviate over-crowding, rather than just making it a problem everywhere.
Great as always! Really looking forward to your next trip!
Hey David, this is such fun. I can't have been the only person to have made Ben ,of Uncharted X, aware of your scepticism . I brought your name up on his site, he acknowledged your your critique, but challenged you to replicate a Serapeum Box using only copper tools, and diorite pounding balls. He awaits the successful completion of your task, and will gracefully defer to you if you if you succeed!
Haha. Dammit, Jim, I'm a historian, not a stone carver.
I love the anecdote about three pyramids all being the tallest, I find that both hilarious and adorable for some reason. I recall an interview I watched a long time ago with (I think?) Bettany Hughes complaining about the tour guides in Greece telling tourists all sorts of wrong information (like the minotaur was real!). What are some of the most entertaining/ridiculous inaccuracies or tall tales you heard at these sites?
We didn't interact a whole lot with the tour guides, so I didn't get to hear them say much. There was a humorous comment made by a tourist at Ek Balam (see my Chichen Itza episode).
Thank for sharing your experience bro
LOVE your videos! as soon as i hear "come on, lets go!" i get so excited :-)
I hate crowds also but Chichen Itza was my favorite site (so far). There is just too much to love. I managed to get into some discussions with some of the vendors who were wood carvers (as am I) and that made the trip even better. We are still friends, often texting and emailing each other. Calakmul and Uxmal are amazing and I even loved Coba (that pyramid!). I visited Tulum before it became over-run by tourists and loved it, especially the ocean view from the cliff. And now Ek Balam and Edzna are on my bucket list, so thanks.
Hello guys, the Yucatan looks amazing....all of those places. If i had to pick one, it would be Chichen Itza, despite the crowds of tourists. My days though, the Maya did like a good ol human sacrifice. I hope someday i can get there and see some of those places (and hopefully not be sacrificed 😉). Great stuff guys, thank you and David i am giving you an A+ in the cool glasses test results....peace to ya.
If you ever go back to Belize I would definitely reconsider doing the ATM cave. The reason they don't allow phones or cameras was due to a tourist dropping a camera on the skull of a sacrificed skeleton and damaging it. It was seriously the highlight of my trip to Belize. The experience of swimming/hiking through a cave was unforgettable. There are perfectly preserved skeletons of sacrificial victims to be seen as well.
Lol I feel you on the journey to Caracol, that was one long drive but definitely worth it.
By the way I've really liked your videos of the various Mayan sites in the Yucatan. I'm fascinated by the Mayan story and you've given me some ideas of more ruins to explore.
I will go to the ATM cave next time I am there! Thank you for watching.
Went to the Yucatán in the year 2000. At that time, we were allowed to ascend the stairs of the pyramid at Chichén Itzá. There also weren’t many lines or vendors like I saw in the vendor. We also went to Ek Balam and there were no other tourists there. It was def my favorite site you felt free to explore without any restrictions and the reliefs were incredible. It was great watching this series. I’m very fascinated by the ball game they played and remember thinking how impossible it seemed to hit a ball through the hoops as they were so high up and small. Keep up the great content, im a new subscriber.
Great videos! 🎉
I think I'm gravitating towards Cassie's suggestions, because I am also not a fan of huge crowds. That being said...I will go to Chichen Itza despite the fact that I know it'll be obnoxious with too many humans, lol. It's just too beautiful not to.
My Favorite: Palenque … been there twice and a lot has change… (we were able to access the „tomb“ back in 1995)
That first mask is AWESOME. Who wouldn't dig that in any art or architectural context? I loved Cenote Azul for cenotes. Had a great restaurant right on it but few people. Some kids jumped in off the roof. Little else.Just deep deep cool water and vertical walls. Chichen Itza was not at all that crowded and commercial in the early 90's. We went to a site that incredible masks and no on there but the us and the archeologists. Don't know the name of that one. It was more towards Chiapas. I get the impression the Mayas had many more great cities and buildings than Europe at the time. The full figure statuary at Ek Balam is fascinating. I want to go back now. Neither of you had Tulum. There are not as many structures there but the setting is incredible. I imagine it is much built up since I've was there.
Fantastic!
Amazing
I went to Chichen Itza right when they opened, but also in early March, so it was almost empty until I was getting ready to leave.
I just went on a Yucatan Mayan tour thanks to these videos. I only went to 4, but here is my ranking 1. Uxmal 2. Ek Balam 4. Chichén Itza 4. Tulum / Izamal
Hello! Just discovered your shorts, lol, and Im subscribing to your channel! Refreshing to not hear ancient alien stuff all of the time!
I've really enjoyed the videos about exploring Mayan sites in the Yucatan region ( I have mainly been in the Mexican part). By the way, the bird you show in your "best sites" video that you saw on the way in to Calakmul was a Great Curassow-males are black and females are brown-definitely a rare, spectacular bird!We also saw several Ocellated Turkeys along the road--looks like you saw a lot at the site. Calakmul was where we saw the Howler Monkeys, as well! Calakmul and other sites in area best definitely in dry season--we were dodging rain showers and biting flies the time we went in May, and couldn't make it to Hormiguero. If I had to pick, my personal favorite is Uxmal, based on the combination of great buildings and lack of crowds. Really liked Calakmul, Edzna, Ek Balam, Kohunlich, the Puuc Hills sites as a group, but you can't really go wrong (for first-timers, recommend flying in to Merida and doing sites around Uxmal and Puuc Hills--lots of sites close to together, good roads and restaurants). Chichen Itza is really great, but like Cassie, I wasn't real thrilled about the crowds and vendors. We really enjoyed birding at almost all the sites we have visited, as well as learning the history. About getting lost (from one of your other videos)--I always use a paper map and Lonely Planet. Best wishes on your future travels!
Thank you for the info! The Great Curassow looks just like the bird we saw -- well done.
Great way to end this very enjoyable series! Thank you for sharing your experiences. P.S. David, I did a double take when I saw you in those modern horn-rimmed glasses. Now, THAT is a GOOD look for you. (IMHO, ditch those big round metal frames!)
Thanks for posting the travelogue, some great tips on some places that are definitely on my list ---I've been agonizing about wanting to get to Calakmul, but its remoteness has given me pause, but you've convinced me I need to bite the bullet and just do it. I would echo comments from other below that you should make trips to the Peten in Guatemala and to Chiapas ---Tikal and Palenque are absolutely first tier sites... Palenque can get very crowded, but the logistics on it are super easy, and the usual tricks (get up early, etc.) work---I also liked Yaxchillan and Tonina alot, and San Cristobol and the surrounding area is also wonderful as a colonial and modern look at Mexico.
For the audience.... 🙂🌻🌎🌍🌻
YUCATAN is a wonderful place to visit especially you like ancient cultures and MAYA Origins are absolutely impressive...❣️
When you are there IMAGINE that all these cities are very close to each other and connected with streets. All buildings, especially the pyramids and temples were COLORED and the floor on places WHITE 🤍 plastered...
Soooooooooo many humans lived there in the past . It must have been incredible...❣️❣️❣️
A great TIP for back trackers is the village of "PUERTO MORELOS" close to the airport of CANCUN and best place to start your back tracker Tour through MESOAMERICA ♥️♥️♥️👍👍💖💖
I love your videos! I've been to most of the places on your list. I also loved Calakmul and Edzna as well. Have you been to Palenque and Yaxchilan?
Not yet! But I plan to go to both of them someday. Thank you for watching.
How ome everytime you post something, someone always gives you a thumb down. Smh. Seems like a hater. Awesome videos. I miss you and glad you doing awwwwwwwwwsome...
Loved the video. Have been to Belize. It would be nice if you would pick a place without the background noise and movement. Distracting from your talk. Maybe an outdoor place since you are talking about things in nature. Also, if you could tell the nearest town so we know where some of these are. Verying interesting topic.
Obviously traveling is out of the question for now but when you can, where do you plan your next trip to be?
I've thinking of either Egypt or Turkey. Just waiting for that vaccine.
World of Antiquity - great choices. Ancient Egypt has always fascinated me.
@@WorldofAntiquity Turkey is great--I highly recommend it, based on my experiences there!
Have you done a video on why so many Mayan cities seem to have been deserted when the Spanish arrived? I know there are a lot of theories.
It's a bit past my time period, but it's an interesting subject!
Gosh, I'm surprised these sites weren't destroyed by the conquistadors. The world just got bigger for me!
I don’t know if anyone will see this as this is an old video, but is it hard to reach Calakmul? My brother and I want to go in August, and we’re wondering if we should hire a guide or just rent a car and drive ourselves.
We rented a car. More details here: ruclips.net/video/WzFNc6lVTWM/видео.html
@@WorldofAntiquity Thanks!
If you haven’t already went, I’ve got some helpful tips about going. Been several times.
We're gonna hit Ek Balam and Coba. I guess the latter didn't float your boat enough for a top 10 finish.
Was this a pre-COVID trip?
Yes, we went back in December of 2019. This video was shot in February.
@@WorldofAntiquity The good ol' days. Looking forward to world travel again.
If I could I would go to Palenque, Was it too far to drive?
We didn't get to go to Palenque. It's still on my bucket list!
It was in a different region.
Your a great couple
anything on Ireland yet?
Not yet. We'll get there eventually. So many places to see!
@@WorldofAntiquity I have a few things for debunking but I'll run with one:
no entry of the construction of 200 round towers by early ecclesiastical scholars in the annals. Damage done- sure, viking raids- sure but you'd think 200 skyscrapers appearing would make the cut!
As a defense building they were useless. after building a viking ship the vikings couldn't build a ladder, set the door on fire and grab a bite to eat while they wait.
I think they predate the monasteries but then I have a new problem.. who did? I have more questions but I'll bore you!
you have cleared up a lot for me btw
Thank you!
I don't remember hearing about this before. I will check it out!
David, forget about the Yucatan. What about the NUBS?
Everybody has their own pet topics that they ask me to address. It's hard to keep up. I plan to get to the nubs at some point. Stay tuned!
No answer David. Does Jimmy Bright have a point you cannot address?
No Coba or Tulum?
Coba didn't quite make the top ten in either of our lists. And Tulum, as wonderful as it is, is from the late Postclassic period and therefore didn't fall into the ancient category.
@@WorldofAntiquity thank you for responding
Beautiful and intelligent woman, perfect travel partner
Yeah she is so cute😊
i love your work but i will debate u soon
What do you want to debate me about?
@@WorldofAntiquity if i can find something you get wrong but you have not yet i am just waiting for you to make a mistake but i love your work keep it up
