    It's expensive because people take it to shops to get it done. It's the labor that's expensive, the parts are very cheap. A brake job per axle costs less $100, that's both rotors and pads together, when done by yourself.

    Brakes are easy. Just cost whatever aftermarket brake parts cost. I'm pretty sure the thousands I spent on automotive and diesel technology classes I took many years ago have paid off just in the fact that I only take my cars in for tires, a new windshield, and the one transmission that had to be rebuilt a few months ago. And that is after 30 years of driving

    Brakes are mostly only expensive when you pay someone else to do the job. When a shop wants to charge between $800 to $1500 to do all four wheels and I can do them myself for less than $250 including new rotors it is a no brainer.

    Pretty much all higher end cars require rotors to be replaced along with the pads. Gets expensive at a dealer, but if you do some research, use an independent shop (or do the work yourself), and buy the parts yourself, the cost is 2-4 times cheaper.
    Some cars have a brake system that will not require maintenance for 100-150k miles depending on usage. All cars should get the fluid flushed ever 2 years.

  • @crxdelsolsir
    @crxdelsolsir 5 лет назад

    I have a 30 year old car where I have only ever changed the brake pads and the rotors are still original and still smooth. In fact I am willing to bet most if not all cars of the 70's, 80's and 90's exhibit this phenomenon.
    Engineers have long known that if 2 materials are in contact with one softer than the other, the softer material is the one to wear out leaving the harder material intact, making only one item needing more frequent replacement (usually the one easier to replace). This concept was also used for keys where the barrel metal is hard and did not wear out with the keys themselves being the wear item which are easier to replace meaning cheaper to repair and maintain.
    Manufacturers have since become smart and tempered the 2 contacting surfaces to essentially be as hard/soft as each other, causing both surfaces to wear and requiring replacement and not just one. This allows the manufacturer to charge more since more parts are used and also charge more for work since more parts are installed.
    In summary, they changed the old concept in order to increase profits and make your car higher maintenance.

    Brake pads are a composite of different materials. They are not usually high performance race cars. For a normal truck or car, materials don’t change frequently. The cars computer braking calculations do vary depending on the type of vehicle you drive. Trucks (1500/2500/3500) have different size brake pads & calipers. Normal cars & SUV crossovers too. The brake calibration are set up to set differently from front to back brakes. I have noticed that my 07Honda Accord Sedan wears out the from brakes at a much faster rate than my other vehicles. Driving speed are not excessive. Frequent sudden stops are not an issue. Terrain (Mountainous), I believe is the problem. I’m starting to believe that the brake factory calibration is contributing to the issue of front brake pad wearing. My rotors are fine. Could you share your view?

  • @hellcat1988
    @hellcat1988 6 лет назад +2

    You should check/replace your breaks every 20-50k miles on ANY car depending on how much you've spent on your pads and how aggressive you drive, but they don't have to cost an arm and a leg.
    Most people will never drive over the stopping power of even the cheapest breaks you can get at a parts store, and even with replacing the rotors you can often get away with replacing all 4 corners for between $100-$200.
    Most times though, your rotors only need to be 'turned,' or have the breaking surface machined down slightly to be smooth and even.

    • @Silverdeamon92
      @Silverdeamon92 6 лет назад +1

      True of those owning Corollas, Accents, Lancers and such but step up to the "big boys" (Jag, Mercedes, BMW, Corvette, Cadi,....) and the story changes to exactly what was explained in this video. Even then these cars (mentioned) are requiring the rotors be replaced instead of machining. Driving habit is a major factor in the longevity of the braking system but the key is to check the mfr's service specs.

  • @bobdadruma
    @bobdadruma 6 лет назад

    Auto Tech with over forty years experience here. My experience with servicing modern disc brake systems is that best results are obtained when the rotors and the pads are replaced together. The brake pads wear grooves in the rotor. The rotor also becomes hardened by heat and it often doesn't cut well on a lathe. I find that brake pads begin to lose noticeable performance ability when they are about 3 to 5 mm thick. When I service my own car I replace the rotors along with the pads. I like to replace front and rear brakes at the same time when possible and get a fresh start so to speak. There is no better feeling than driving a vehicle that stops with confidence. Especially in an emergency situation. Having good brakes and tires on your car is cheap insurance.

  • @frankcoffey

    German brands like to get their service ticket average around a grand. So the rotors are made out of stuff that wears out and also damages the finish of the wheels in some cases. Other brands don't have those problems and their brakes perform just as well if not better. I bought a BMW in 1999 and it had both problems (and many others) and a brake job was about $900. That was my first and last German car.

    You didn't answer the question of why brakes are so expensive.
    I usually do my own brakes so I don't find them to be expensive. Parts aren't that expensive and I can usually get the job done in under an hour. Like most things, having a shop do it can make it expensive.
    Last year I was getting new tires and NTB called to tell me that my rear brakes were shot, with one side down to the backing plate. It was over $400. I could have done the job for about $150. My regular guy would have only charged about $250.
    To make life even more interesting NTB put my wheel bolts on with so much torque that I needed to put a 5 ft. section of black pipe on my breaker bar to get them loose.
    No more NTB for me.

    European brands apparently have undersized pads that leave a noticeable ridge on the outer edge of the disc/rotor. So while American and Japanese cars can do 2 pads per rotor, European cars need a new rotor & pads at the same time.

    Another thing to take under consideration: cutting the rotors is getting more and more expensive and sometime it is a better deal to get new ones with new brake pads as opposed to reused the rotors that won't last as long and that will be definitely more prone to warp.

    I always bring my own parts to my mechanic. I never use the dealer unless car’s under warranty. Anyways this shop I’ve been going to for years they hired a new mechanic. He gave me the bs that the brakes I ordered do NOT fit my car. I knew that was not true. They were busy that day and they told they would call me when it’s done. No prob. I came back 2 hours later when he called. The car brakes worst than when I went into. I brought him Akebono ceramic pads, and centric rotors. I noticed the car did not stop well, I even had them do a brake fluid change. The A hole swapped out my brakes to cheap ones. Immediately the car dusted like crazy. And the wheels were very hard to clean also. And my rotors rusted like crazy! I know metal rust but these rotors rusted like no other! He swapped out my brakes for very very cheap ones. Now all 4 rotors are warped! Car shakes like crazy! I’m so mad! I paid for quality parts and got cheap parts for my car put on my car.

    But he didn't say why they cost what they do, just the diff parts involved. He didn't mention everything is x2 and the fact prople could be charged new prices on reman'd parts (caliper) and shops only guarantee work if everything is replaced since they were the last people to touch them im order to take out any variable that could cause a failure. Also, shop rates have sky rocketed and maybe mfgrs don't want to be nickel/dimed on mx and have now passed the cost to the custom as a "cost saving/profit raising" measure.

    Wether brake rotors are made out of steel or not is kinda confusing. I think they’re technically steel as they have carbon and silicon in them? It might not count because I think the carbon is in a graphite form. I think it might be some kind of industry jargon, but they’re typically not referred to as steel.

    Blame the abnormal wear on brake vectoring, also known as trace control on most modern cars.

    Surprised Brian would make this mistake, since he checks his sources..... brake rotors are almost all made of iron. Not steel.

      What manufacturer is giving you a free lifetime warranty on pads?

  • @oldtwinsna8347

    Majority of cars you're better off buying new discs than having them machined, which are lucrative labor rate makers for shops (full book rate that is done in a tenth of the time it takes). Also resist the hype of getting drilled rotors as they are a waste of money and perform worse.

    Bunk
    Learn how to measure you brake pads. Often you need only remove the wheel to measure pads and rotor. When time comes for replace do it yourself. Even with buying the tools to do the job you will save about 500 bucks. 36k Miles seems to soon. My accord did 120k before brake job number 1

    Do automatics get through brakes/discs faster? Just thinking about sitting on the brakes whilst stopped (e.g. at traffic lights) and heat damage or something?

    Only issue I have is the video addresses what make brakes work... not why they're "so expensive."

  • @davidgruen7423
    @davidgruen7423 6 лет назад

    ??? What is expensive? I have been waiting to change my brakes pads but it lasts forever, noooooo! And the rotor is barely worn at all.

  • @famicomnintendo
    @famicomnintendo 6 лет назад

    Don't skimp on security and just buy the best brakes you can afford. And unless you do the brakes yourself, just change the rotors when you change the pads. You can cheap out on almost anything in life but you should never cheap out on safety. Good tires and brakes, and working lights the rest is not so important.

    Years ago I had my new 1980 Audi serviced at Atlas Porche Audi near San Pedro in Los Angeles. While talking to the service guy a mechanic walked up and asked a question about charging a 911 customer for several services. Done separately each service entailed a specific number of work units. Done in sequence there are overlapping work units. Lets say if you are mounting new tires and getting new brake pads you should only be charged for dismounting and remounting the tires once. The service guy told the mechanic to bill separate full work units for each service item. The mechanic gave me an uncomfortable look as he walked away. I suspect this is a common and profitable bit of fraud(?) in most new car dealers.

  • @FrancoCastro

    They aren't as expensive. I live in Mexico and we almost never change rotors. In the US almost every shop will require change rotors.
