  • This week we're taking another look at the Falken Wildpeak AT3! The Falken Wildpeak AT3 has been another tire I've heard a lot about from your comments. You all have spoken about it enough that I thought it was definitely worth taking another look at the AT3.

    Just put these on my wife's Eclipse Cross. Great all around tire. No sacrifice. Great in dry, wet, & snow. Of course not as good as a dedicated winter tire, but, much better than most 'normal' tires in winter. Ride is great. Really zero cons. I don't put them on my 2 vehicles because of different needs (Civic & FJ Cruiser). But, they are perfect for her AWD crossover.

    Falken wildpeaks are the best tires I’ve ever had. They work so well on my 4runner

    • @Theyralltakenfu
      @Theyralltakenfu Год назад +1

      I have a 4th Gen 4Runner and completely undecided on the KO2 or the Wildpeaks. Do you drive in the snow, and if so, what did you think? Many say the KO2's aren't so great in the wet, and that bothers me a bit.

    • @jerryjohnson9531
      @jerryjohnson9531 Год назад +2

      @@Theyralltakenfu I have the Wildpeaks on my 5th gen 4runner. They are great in the snow and wet. They are also quiet. My only complaint is that then need to be replace very soon with only 31,000 miles on them and I have rotated them every 5, 000 miles. I really wanted to switch to KO2's but have heard to many horror stories about their wet handling (especially after they get 15,000-20,000 miles on them).

    • @Theyralltakenfu
      @Theyralltakenfu Год назад +1

      @@jerryjohnson9531 I got the KO's and the wet handling is ok. I think the problem is, when the weight distribution is off kilter. such as my 4Runner being heavier in the front then back, and it being rear wheel drive. I put sand bags in the bag to balance it out a bit, and it does seem better to me, and that's without using my 4WD.
      I'm confused how it's good on snow and ice, yet they say wet roads are a problem. I don't see how you have one, and not the other. Oh well, I can always change it when I don't feel happy with the results, if that happens.

    Matt- Keep up the good work on your tire reviews, you do a great job on explaining the design and overall differences comparing tires. I just wanted to bring up my experience from a "test driver's" perspective when it came to evaluating the Falken AT3. I was hired to help develop the new Toyo AT3 over the past few years and when I was at the proving ground on the test tracks, the Falken was the tire to beat! I was so impressed with its overall performance from - Lateral Grip in (snow, wet, dry) to Off-Road, Ride Comfort and a handful of other areas tested from an OEM standard. I tested these tires in limit conditions along with 7 other All Terrain tires in this class. I am sharing this story because I was shocked when I was doing a confirmation test on our final evaluations before the Toyo AT3 was released and let me tell you that the Falken went from 1st to almost last out of the 8 total tires tested. I don't work for Toyo USA but was hired as a consultant on the project. I was like "this can't be possible" I went back and tested a few more categories just to confirm and the data didn't change..... I then asked if we still had our baseline tire from our previous snow test in storage, since I knew it would have zero wear on it. We mounted them up and compared the older spec ( 1 year ago ) to our new Falken AT3 spec (Jan 2020) and "WOW" night and day. The older spec was right on point with my previous data and out shined the newer spec from the confirmation testing. Same exact tire spec etc. but the performance was way off..... I won't get into the details but the Falken AT3 tire was changed at some point from a rubber compound side, we call this a running change during production. This change was not announced but proven. I have been testing tires professionally for many years and I personally am not taking sides just sharing my personal experience on a find that I was not even focusing on. If Falken wants to prove me wrong I am open for the challenge but I think your followers might want to know that the Falken "hype" may be in the past for the AT3. I am attaching a video I did for Toyo, not to sell the Toyo product or promote my channel but for your followers to see that this is my job. In the end, the Falken AT3 was my go to tire when people asked me for my professional opinion. That has now changed unfortunately until proven otherwise.

      That's crazy. Falken gets tons of love on RUclips. I know that I went to a Michelin Dealer meeting and they were commenting about a running compound change on some sizes of the K02 because of issues with accelerated tread wear. I love that Toyo Open Country AT3. I can't wait to try some.

      I tell everyone about you and this statement about the Falkens. I was just about to buy some a few months ago and then I found you and went with Toyo. It was between Toyo and Grabber ATX and I went with toyo because they are lot lighter and have a better mileage warranty. Thanks for telling the truth! So many people are going to be upset when the snow starts flying and they're Falkens fail them.

      Giving a bump to this video. I remember having my K02's before the 50K warranty, and seeing these for the first time. I thought they looked like a rip off of the KO2 tread design, but I perked up at the price and over time have "softened" up on them also. I put em on my Renegade daily getting rid of the OEM tires on that which were worthless in Montana Winters. I loved them before trading the Renegade here recently for a Gladiator. I'm going back and forth on KO2's and the AT3W's as the Bridgestone's aren't blowing me away at this point, for sure and winter coming up in Montana... AND, I can save 25 bucks a tire or so vs the KO2's...here in Jan 2024 at Discount tire, going with 285/70/17's... Freedom Edition...

    I purchased this tire in a 35X1250 20 about five months ago for my 2018 F250, after doing a boatload of research and reading reviews. I have put 10.5K on them thus far on stock wheels. I run 55 lbs. in them and get even wear across the tire on an 8 inch wheel. They recommend a 9 inch wheel for the tire size. So far they have been an outstanding tire. I live in N. Texas and run back and forth across Colorado, Wyoming and Montana to eastern Washington State.
    Having said all that, they are a 10 ply and weigh in at about 77 lbs per tire in the 35X1250-20. That is a lot of rolling weight and you will feel the difference in your steering. Road noise is a little more than a stock Michelin AT. The small increase in road noise is a small price to pay for the performance of this tire at 20/32 tread depth. I really haven’t had the chance to run them in the mid-summer Texas heat which is a tire’s enemy. I will likely change them out come spring to a 35X1250-20 Michelin Defender for the summer. I’ll put the Falkens back on next winter. That is just my personal preference.

Now that I have 20k miles on them they are rock solid. I have no concerns about the tread life so far. They’re remarkably quiet such an aggressive tread pattern and they balance easily. My brother in law runs these tires on his Tacoma and loves them. He lives in Denver and raves about the winter traction. I’m obviously a fan but not blindly loyal.

    I just drove these tires through one and a half foot tall snowdrifts made of heavy snow the other night helping cars that were stuck. Typically the road was about 8 inches unplowed at night with lots of taller snow drifts on top of slick hardpack snow with sheets of black ice underneath with only small patches exposed. I purposely drove through the one foot + sections for extended periods of time at low speed to limit momentum. The tires didn't fight for traction at all, just gripped hard and went and stopped without much issue either. 2001 Nissan Xterra with 30.5 tires and no lift for reference.

These have held up much better than the General Grabber ATx which only had 5,000 miles on the rears before they needed replaced. Again, this is an oversized tire used in a towing application. These tires were within specs for air pressure and both sets had an alignment before install. Rotations aren't perfect but performed every 5-10,000 miles. I'm learning that the 3PMSF rating tends to come with softer tread compounds which do not handle heavy loads. Both tires wear quickly on the rear axle. I commonly tow a 14,000 lbs gooseneck trailer.

I recent purchased The TOYO AT3s because I saw they were winter rated and I’ve noticed they are a lot louder on the road and they aren’t the greatest on wet roads. They are great in mud but I wish I saved my $200 dollars and bought another set of Wildpeaks. I think Toyo AT3s could use more sipping for wet weather. I currently looking at buying a set of summer wheels and I’ll probably put the Toyos on those and buy another set of Wildpeaks for winter. Highly highly recommend Wildpeaks. They have gotten me and my family through some crazy storms.

    I have the falken at3 at 215/65/16 on my Transit connect and bought in to all the hype, I loved them at first, great ride, but at 17k miles and rotated every 5k miles they are pretty much bald and the warrant won’t cover due to being a commercial vehicle. It could be the fact transits don’t have a camber adjustment but I did get 30k miles on a continental tire.
