The Cumbernauld Centre, originally called Cumbernauld town centre, boasts a fascinating history that reflects changing ideas about urban design:
New Town Vision (1950s): Cumbernauld was designated a new town in 1955 to ease Glasgow's overcrowding. The Centre, designed in the 1950s, embodied this vision.
Mega dream (1960s): Planned as a single massive structure, it was a "megastructure" containing shops, apartments, a hotel, and even an ice rink, all under one roof! Construction began in 1963 under architect Leslie Hugh Wilson.
Grand Opening (1967): Phase 1 was completed by 1967, and Princess Margaret herself opened the centre. It was seen as a marvel of modern design.
    Shifting Perceptions
The Centre's fortunes changed over time:
Architectural Divide: The brutalist architectural style, while innovative then, fell out of favour. The megastructure concept itself faced criticism for isolating pedestrians from cars.
Phased Development (1960s-Onwards): The original ambitious plans weren't fully realized. Later phases saw a move away from the megastructure concept, with some parts even demolished.
Preservation Debate (2022): There was a recent consultation in 2022 by Historic Environment Scotland to consider giving the Centre a listed status, recognizing its architectural and historical significance.
The Cumbernauld Centre stands as a testament to a bygone era of urban planning, sparking discussions about how we design our cities today.
