The penthouses worked very well as houses. The reason they were changed to office use was because the estates department wanted to close the centre overnight . Residential needs 24/7 access . Offices closed at 20.00
My goodness professor- assuming you don’t live here, it’s fine for you to advocate for its regeneration while you jump in your car and head home , no doubt to a leafy suburb. Let’s take lots of pictures and knock it down. Cumbernauld has grown and developed and deserves a better civic space
@matthewmckellar698 During my time working in CDC, all the designers were encouraged to live in the town by the deputy chief architect who lived with his family in Lochlea Road and latterly in the Village.
@@davidcook2468 not sure you made your point clearly- but noted . Although I’d say that the housing itself and the design isn’t the real issue. It’s the crumbling hulk in the centre of the town
People think Cumbernauld failed. It didn’t really. It housed people from the slum tenements of town centre when the town was getting torn down when motorways were getting built. Cumbernauld had indoor toilets and houses that weren’t mouse infested.
To say the penthouses 'did not work' is untrue. They were no good for families with children as there was no outside space, apart from the roof, but they were ideal for young people working in the area. Although they were expensive so you had to have a well paid job to afford to live in them. The interior design was remarkable - it was a time capsule of the 60s with open tread wood staircases, wooden ceilings and some wooden walls.
Is it true that Cumbernauld shuts on a Sunday ? Wouldn't surprise me in the least ! I noticed that you managed to get in a nice plug on the wall of the building for William Hill ..bookies to the housing schemes ! Nice piece of advertising ...
I lived. There from 19 to 40 was good for kids but when down quick when housees. Sold for 23grand.and landlords put teenagers from Glasgow in them houses could not sell remember six homes and mine up for sale the shops were good in the old days so glad i on a island now best thing i didfor me and kids 😂
So I disagree with it being busier as people didn’t have cars, they did. It was busier because it used to have decent shops. Mothercare, John Menzies, Halfords, boots, shoe shops, wimpy , scan … if there were decent shops it would still be busy
Car use has only increased over time here, just like the rest of Scotland. Maybe you are not old enough to remember, but having a car was a much bigger deal back in the day.

The scan bookshop was brilliant, so beautiful inside
Brilliant video

@matthewmckellar698 perhaps you miss the point that those charged with decisions really ought to work from a position of first hand experience.

Maybe if the airport next door stopped spraying the sky. Maybe it could be opened up and glorious again
Which one??
