I actually love the lining in mine. I put it on when I go into the woods when it's extremely cold. It works so incredibly well, and for anyone reading this. Sylvester Stallone wore this jacket in the opening scenes in "First Blood.” I actually have the exact US flag patch that Stallone wore. I took it to a small shop and they sewed it on and I actually have the US Marines name tape on mine. I was in the Marines from 02-06 (in Tokyo). Stallone had the US Army on his, but I wasn't gonna put that on. I wanted it to look exactly like Stallone's jacket. I absolutely love it. I wear it all year long. I actually sleep in it as well. 🤣👍
Got the original drab one, the BDU and DCU version. Fine jacket and stylish too. Far better than the current issue fleece. They really need to go back to this style.
I had my dad's from WW2. I used it from the late 50s to the early 60s and I'm 73 now. It had no zippers or velcro but all buttons. I didn't have the liner. I also don't remember the inner and outer being open at the bottom but sewn together. It was great for camping and hunting. I liked the pockets for fireworks. M 80s in one and Cherry Bombs in the other and the flaps kept sparks out. Somehow I wore it out by the time I was about 15.
Love my od green M65 field jacket, been wearing one since the seventies. Back in the day every one wanted it. It was like a status symbol. I’ve outgrown my older one but I’m holding on to it. I have two that I wear. Wear mine fall thru spring. I do like you, for cold weather I put on a fleece, or flannel shirt or sweater. That’s just how I dress. Thanks for this video.

The button in liner is really the magic. Live in cold and wet environment? Skip the jacket, buy the liner, wear it under your rain gear. Breathes well if you are actively working outside!
I bought an M65 Jacket from Helikon-Tex. Seller from Poland and produced in china matching the original version from the army. You get the liner too when you buy the jacket. When it is autumn or spring I wear just the jacket and in winter I put the liner in it.
I agree! I bought 3 aftermarket ones in different colors and I wear them all the time. It is amazing you still fit into your original one. Most of the rest of us need a size or two upgrade. Lol! I believe that the basics always works, so why change things if it does not make our lives better. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for your service! That's a great coat. Back in the mid to late 1970s I had a similarly styled coat, I think by Pacific Trail, that was called a 60/40 coat because it was 60 percent cotton and 40 percent polyester or some other synthetic. It was a very comfortable coat. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge.
@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman You're welcome! I've lived in the Pacific Northwest for my entire life, so I have always been a big fan of Filson wool coats. I have two vintage Filson mackinaws, one a single and the other a double. Great coats for a damp climate.

I have the ones I got in 1980 through 85. One each in tiger stripe, bdu/woodland and good old army green. The tiger stripe I bought for some training stuff we did where we were acting as Opfor. Woobie liner was nice but agree that the bulk was odd so I used Wooley pulley under jacket back then in German winters otherwise just used thermals under bdus if cold. 6:06
😂 I love the woodland camo M65 every since 1980something Im over fiddy so that’s been a minute Thank you for your service sir We would live in a different world if all the service men and women didn’t do what they do !!!!!
The best army jacket (not only army) ever. Of course, military issue not commercial or some copy variant. I got 7 of these, made by Golden mfg, Cherokee, So-Sew and John Ownbey from 1970 - 1983 4 of them are OG and 3 in a M81 woodland pattern. Too much long lasting jackets just for one life .🤣🤣🤣
Cockpit is the only one I know of that makes them to spec in the USA. There are also some Japanese brands that are not half bad. But the rest have gone the way of making fashion jackets.
When I was in the M65 was replaced by Goretex. The Goretex had a hood. It kept the rain off you. And it had better pockets. The m65 is nice. I have one now. Just I do not use it. I would rather use my pea coat. It is warmer.
It is a great jacket indeed! I am trying to get a OD one like I used to have, not into the woodland or desert. Have you ever tried a M-51 fishtail parka? I had just the shell and while it only had two hand pockets, it was lighter, covered more, and just as wind and rain proof as the M65. Both are great jackets. If in the winter, buy a larger size than what you would wear in the Spring and Fall.
I'll have to look up the fishtail. I have a woodland camo a size bigger for just that reason but the od is my favorite. Thanks for the great comments C&F!
I have an OD green one that is rather new, but XL…. It’s too big for me. I retired 9 years ago, but it’s available if you want it…$30.- + shipping to your place it’s yours
Getting one in as good quality as this for even $150 is incredibly hard. These days, the new ones are $225, but they're made in China and don't follow the old spec at all.
How many M-65 field jackets do you have? I agree with all of your critiques of the liner being bulky and not being comfy in terms of fit even though it is warm. I don't like the sleeve length of the liner either since it stops halfway down the forearm. I love the late 80s version due to the zipper being very smooth and working well. Will you do the Goretex ECWCS parka before the cold season ends? I got one but it's damaged now so I'll have to pick up another parka. Will you show us more of your military gear and clothing?
Got rid of most of my military gear (mistake) years ago but I will be showing a bit more soon. I have 2 other field jackets and a gortex I can show also.
Anyone know where to buy an unissued one or probably more realistically a near new one please? Genuine, original issue not a ridiculously overpriced fashion piece. Stay safe, thanks for the great video
All the ones I own I got through the Air Force. If you can't find anything on line I would visit your local surplus stores. Unfortunately they have become quite expensive lately. Good luck!
Was trying to find a black one from alpha industries but their new ones are made in China. Very thin and over priced.. I remember when they made them in Nashville. It's like everyone bought all the quality ones
I have a black Alpha industries one, got it close to 30 years ago. Brass zipper, a bit faded and worn but other than that it’s otherwise perfect. It’s so old even the epaulette buttons are faded! But made in the US and the quality is what has made it last.
I'm 6'3" and I use a Large / Long sizing, when I was about 15 kg lighter I used to fit comfortably into a Regular / Long. If you want an original, make sure it has a DSA or DLA number on it. There's lots of fakes out there. I've always had originals and they have lasted me a very long time If you can't source an original, then the Propper olive green are pretty good quality repros (not as good as OEM but close). Cheers 👍
I'd go with a Large Long. Medium Regular is sized for height 67" to 71" and chest 37" to 41". I'm 69" tall, 40" chest and 160lbs and prefer the fit of Medium Regular. Enough room for me to layer a fleece or down vest on colder days. Also recommend buying an original military issued M65 over a reproduction.
I'm only a shade over '6 0.5" and I have to wear a medium long. I got two medium regular sized ones before I realized I needed medium long. The label says '5 11" and above for the long length.
I’ve had a 68 dated one with a grey liner and aluminium zipper. Had since early 90s. Unfortunately it’s a bit snug now so want a replacement. So not sure whether to go for an alpha one or ( someone said the Austrian ones are better.) .
@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman thanks. I’ve gone for an Austrian poly cotton one. Not the later goretex. There’s too many cheap copies of M65s out there unfortunately. I couldn’t have one of those when I’ve got a original( even though it’s a bit snug)!
I recently acquired my first M65 jacket as I have had M65 fishtails before, for what it is, its not too bad at all but not quite there enough for me to stop wearing my MA1 flight jacket the current one bought early 2000's and have an even older one in the wardrobe covered in scooter rally patches I bought that one at some serious expense late eighties. I kept a lot of my old issue kit, couple pairs of 68 issue camo combat trousers, a couple pairs of 84 issue trousers, a 1961 "bank robbers" olive heavy flak jacket, a 68 issue combat lined jacket and a warm weather 90 issue camo combat jacket. I got all of this mid eighties and aside from one pair of 68 trousers tearing due to washed out fibres the rest are like as good as new. Doubtful if the newer MTP stuff will be around in 40 years time still serviceable, stuff is made out of paper seemingly, just so poor quality and who's idea was it to give soldiers those rubbish matte brown boots, got a pair of them and they are HIDEOUS!!! Dr Martens or NATO specs only on my feet oh maybe one of my collection of rare Adidas maybe if I do wear jeans rarely :D The '61 flak jacket is very close to the M65, came about when the quartermaster at Woolwich barracks was asked to dig out some old kit as we were going to creosote the assault course so was given a set of ancient uniform bits but then another battery got the mucky job and we were told to just throw away the sixties stuff so I did, in my wardrobe at me mums :)
Could you do a video listing layering alternatives to the liner especially the military alternatives that you used? I have two of the exact same jacket you're wearing the So-Sew Styles 1987 M-65 I also have one from 1979 but the 1987 is my favorite with the YKK Zipper? All in all the jacket is terrific. I don't like the chest pockets that are hard to reach into and are deep so I have a hard time taking items out. The hood is a little annoying because its hard to put back in a way that doesn't press against my back when I wear the jacket. The thing I enjoy most about the M-65 is the functionality the large hip pockets can fit almost anything I carry with me so I can put them there as opposed to my pant pockets. It's cool looks don't hurt either. I forgot to say you did a nice review and it's one of the best reviews of this jacket on RUclips.. Will you review other military clothing items you think are great?
@bd3199 Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate you! Funny this comes up cuz I used to have enough military gear and clothing to start a small army but sadly that has been reduced greatly due to my RV lifestyle. When I finish my move to Arkansas next month and reconnect with my stuff I'll put something together. I believe I still have the milspec winter hood and a few wool head covers I used to wear with it when I was active duty in extreme cold weather locations. Thanks for the idea!
@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman you're welcome. I wanted to ask which clothing items you used to layer underneath the M-65 opposed to the liner. Did you use the five button sweater which is too tight for me or another item? I'll be on the lookout for more content. I hope you like Arkansas.
In many ways the British one is superior..including been cheaper to buy...at least if you live in the UK...and im not saying that as I'm British lol...but...you can only get the UK one in camouflage...so its no good for normal use like shopping or going to the cinema...unless you want to look a bit naff...
Every man over 30 years old should have one in the wardrobe. Amazing jacket, great piece of US Army history.

Check out the Iron Heart M-65. It's pricey but worth it imo.
Yeah man, looks like a good one!
Yeah you want to get mil spec for sure.
I have a black Alpha industries one, got it close to 30 years ago. Brass zipper, a bit faded and worn but other than that it’s otherwise perfect. It’s so old even the epaulette buttons are faded! But made in the US and the quality is what has made it last.
@@roberting5288 Have the same. Woodland camo.
Don’t talk smack about the bdus, they’re beautiful and good for fall weather.
Austria has a gortex one like that
Good…but not great.
I suggest you try a British Military Smock. Way better and far more practical.
All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧
Cool.
ordered fabric wax and a heat gun! gonna 'wax' my 65!
Nice!
how is the sizing on these? im gonna buy a medium and just hoping it fits well on a 180 taller guy. jacket is so awesome!
Sounds about right. I'm about 195lb, 6'. This jacket is a medium regular.
The label says '5 11" and above for the long length.
what brand is it? alpha? even if millitary issue, some brand must have made it. what year is it from?
It's a So Sew. Can't read the label anymore so don't know when it was contracted but it was new when I received it mid 80's.
Looks like '81 contract.
I’ve had a 68 dated one with a grey liner and aluminium zipper. Had since early 90s. Unfortunately it’s a bit snug now so want a replacement. So not sure whether to go for an alpha one or ( someone said the Austrian ones are better.)
.
I'm not familiar with the Austrian jackets but these US are hard to beat.
I purchased mine on eBay. It's the real jacket. You should check out what they have. I bought mine for $70.
@@CommonCentsOutdoorsman where can I find one like yours please?
@@lucamarsilli9789 I would try Ebay or your local military surplus store.
How is the woodland any different besides the colors?
Same quality and build.
I am needed one m65 field jacket. You please know me the price of the jacket, size : xxl & olive green colur./west bengal, India.
Prices vary greatly depending on new, used, condition etc. Have to shop around.
Has anyone decided to apply wax to their M65 and make it permanently waterproof? Id like to hear how you did it and if it was a good decision.
I've sprayed mine with atsko. It seems to stick fairly well after a few sprays.
Where can I get one these days sir?
Try Ebay or local military surplus store.
If this one was "issued" and you wore it, why is there no name tape, insignias or other identification markings on it?
Took that stuff off when I retired 22 years ago. Most do.
Are the M65 parkas in camouflage, like the ACU camouflage, of the same quality?
Yes. I have a woodland camo from 1995 and ACU digital from early 2000's. All same quality.
Sounds like you still have some good stuff. Thanks for your service brother, and the great comment!
You were convincing till you mentioned Dr Martin’s
great, a size larger wouldnt have hurt you either
I do have a larger size for colder weather.
It would be helpful if you could tell us where you got it.

I'm not the biggest fan of the liner myself. I think the sizing or build is bad.
Yup. Never seemed to fit or feel right.
@bd3199 I did. I regret letting those go but I lived in Virginia for 22 years and didn't need them.
Late 80's issue OD? I don't think so.
bane jacket
Lol
What brand is it ?
So sew
The British Army smock will do the same and more than the m65. 👋🏻🏴
In many ways the British one is superior..including been cheaper to buy...at least if you live in the UK...and im not saying that as I'm British lol...but...you can only get the UK one in camouflage...so its no good for normal use like shopping or going to the cinema...unless you want to look a bit naff...
M65 camo looks cool on the street. So why not the B.A. smock?
What material its made of
Cotton/polyester
