- In the Hall of Illusions Trap our adventurers are lured into viewing mystical mirrors that depict a scene. Each illusion seems to be spelling out the answer to a puzzle or riddle... or... are the illusions simply setting them up for a trap! Let's review the Hall of Illusions Trap from Traps & Treachery!

probably go with DANGER, backwards rather than beware, seems like it might give less away. "oh, ANGER, guess i have to break the last mirror"
Ah, I like what you did there! Absolutely... that's a great idea!
If this was a trap in my campaign, whatever set it off would open all the mirrors, revealing a monster behind each - PANIC! I would give the party one round to react to this - SCRAMBLE! - as the beasts slowly awaken from the stasis spell they must have been under to not have died from starvation. And then: Roll for initiative, against a basilisk, a cockatrice, a rust monster, etc. Use the twelve most fun monsters you never use, but the players love to hate.
However, I would use the twelve mirrors as a puzzle lock to the door at the end of the corridor. A magical voice, or an inscription above the mirrors, requests you to touch each surface, though never "my neighbours, nor our reflections". This means that after you touch one mirror, the next mirror you touch must not be directly to the right or left of it, nor on the opposite wall, straight across from these three mirrors (two at the ends of the corridor).
If a mirror is touched incorrectly, the character is trapped in the mirror (or the scene), while the remaining characters scramble to solve the riddle. The way to release their friends is a lever in the locked room. The solution of this puzzle is easy enough if you know how the knight moves in a game of chess, and yes, there are multiple solutions. Once all mirrors have been touched in a correct order, the door unlocks.
I would make the scenes dangerous, and action-filled, so the trapped character could have something to do while their comrades solved the puzzle. They'd better hurry before the frost giants catch you and put you in their stew, or your boat rides off the edge of the waterfall, or the house you're in burns down. Good luck!
Holy smokes @Ciofey... you have a ton of good ideas cooking here. Your players are going to be in for an epic battle against the monsters AND the mirrors themselves. I dig it. Cheers!
A room built by Escher, that will certainly distract the party from the dangers of the room.
Each mirror could be behind a curtain and the final one with the Basilisk is just glass, and it's dark inside. So the character has to actively peer into the darkness and the last thing they see is 2 glowing green eyes as they turn to stone.
That is definitely a solid idea... I love the curtain idea! Thank you buddy. :) Guess I won't be able to use this against you now, lol.
@@WallyDM Can still use it against me. "I close my eyes as I open to the curtain" "The cloaker acting as the curtain gets advantage attacking you" is just one option.
More of a triggered combat than a "trap", but it's still a fun encounter!
Absolutely! One of my favorites, for sure. Cheers!
This trap is amazing! Absolutely love it . I made the first five mirrors give out a symbol that when the five are put together make a mirror imaged word, so the players had to hold them up to a mirror to find out what the word was and it served as a "secret word" to enter the next room. They all loved it and was a ton of fun to see them solve it,
Nice! Glad you were able to take the idea and include it in your game. Welcome to the channel. Glad to have ya aboard! :-)
I'm curious. What is the deal with the other mirrors? Like, why are there illusions of people in half of the mirrors?
I enjoy this puzzle a lot. I might use this on the weekend for a hag layer!
Basilisk traps AND a Hag layer? Awww yeah... now that's DMing! Mwahaha!
I was prepping for a Medusa Dungeon in an old temple of ehlonna, this is literally PERFECT!
Hooooray! Glad I could help. :-)
These videos are so awesome. I love every single one of them.
Me too. I've used some of these scenarios in my adventures for a D&D group that has been playing for about 15 years. We salute you, Master Wally DM. Keep up the good work!
As long as everyone still loves these videos, I will keep making them. Thank you for this fantastic comment, you made my day! :)
@@RustyKeys72 Thank you very much! Good to hear that you can use some of these ideas in your game. It's comments like these that keep me wanting to make more videos. :)
Just discovered your channel when googling good traps for my dungeon, definitely using this one many thanks!
Fantastic! Welcome to the channel... glad to have ya aboard! Stay tuned... new puzzle video on Wednesday and the Puzzle Encounters book will be launching in a few weeks! :)
This is an amazing video. You did a great job explaining the trap, and I love your red herring addition to it! Keep up the amazing work!
Thank you Michael! Glad you liked it and thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it!
Great video! So much that you can do with this trap! On to the next!!
Haha! On to the next indeed! Thank you my friend! :)
I need to take a look at these traps more! Excellent job Wally!
Yes you do! Some fun traps in here for sure! Enjoy!
I am absolutely using this perfect trap, for the encounter I'm setting up,
modding it more to target specific players, for character plot reasons,
but I think the concept of a monster trap at the very end, releasing a demon they need to fight,
would be a great way to finish off the "House of mirrors" as it's being dubbed, Thank you so much for putting up,
I'm glad that this video was helpful to you. Hope the trap runs well. Let me know how it goes. Cheers!
This got the juices flowing. Thanks!
You bet! Hope it serves you well. This is a fun one!
Hmm, just to make it interesting the reflection could have the PC as the person in the mirror (the gardener, the blacksmith, etc) doing what they do. Perhaps in this way the PC could do something in the mirror world to reveal a clue or the letter. Maybe there is something laying on the blacksmiths anvil and it is the letter made of metal, the chef has a ladal in the shape of one of the letters, etc. Also I would reward the players if they figure out that looking into the mirrors are a trap before they get to the end of the hall in that if they close their eyes and try to open the door it opens right up, no problem, otherwise it wouldn't. This is just some first thoughts.
Also, yes I realize that this would end up with there being many people of the same occupation in a mirror, but, that sounds kinda silly and fun to me.
Yeah, these are some great ideas! I totally dig it... this definitely could be fun. Also... good to see ya buddy! :)
Saw you on Dungeon Class and subbed. I really like this trap for a certain room in CoS. Thanks for the great idea. I really like adding traps into an adventure. There's not enough of them. On my way to pick up your book!
Hey there! Glad you found the channel. Thank you for subscribing and picking up the book, hope you enjoy it. Stay tuned, I have a lot of good things planned. Cheers!
ok had to sub, have been watching some of ur vids for the last day, as I was asked to run a dungeoncrawler style campaign for our group so our regular dm can chill every other week, and my usual run of waterdeep was a little to rp-heavy for their likings, bc they just want to chill and run in some traps and puzzles or fight. Needed some inspiration for good traps and puzzles and seems like i found exactly what I needed. Thanks mate, appreciate it. Greetings from Germany :)
Hey there Maggie! I'm glad that you are enjoying my video series on Traps and Puzzles. Thank you for subscribing to my channel, I put out at least one new trap and puzzle every month. Also ... greetings from the U.S.A. (Chicago). Great to have ya aboard!
@@WallyDM Well, thanks for having me. I'm having lots of fun digging through your videos. :) Helps me a lot, as i like writing lore and riddles, but i suck at building puzzles, so it helps a lot. ^-^
@@DasMaggie Fantastic. Glad I could help. ;)
i like the idea of the npc illusion doing some activity to give a hint, like the gardener pruning and the letter being made out of a shrub, and if the pcs work it out they could have advantage on their search . and then the prisoner is just staring blankly frozen in place giving them a subtle hunt. but knowing most people they would try to line up with there the prisoner is looking then BOOM Basilisk!
oh and the end door, not locked. you could just walk out. but if this follows a door puzzle they might not even try. if they did then the Basilisk would attack them as they go into the next room which could be setup to be an easier fight.
i don't know about pathfinder but in 5e Basilisks target them self if they can see their reflection so you could do something like the illusions turn off after a couple of rounds to get the Basilisk to petrify itself so making cleaning the trap up easier to reset, and also giving an advantage to the pcs if they are doing really badly.
definitely adding this one to the list, nice work keep it up :)
Thank you for the great discussion on this trap! Basilisks are fun encounters, for sure. Let me know how it goes if you run it in your game. Stay tuned and be sure to subscribe! Much, much more to come for dungeon building. :)
First off, I loved the concept of this trap and the recreation/update you've made to it. However, I had a different ending in mind halfway through your explanation; and I thought some people might find useful/more challenging that a basilisk(for higher lvl parties). I was really hoping that you were going to bring to life the characters in the mirrors on the opposite wall (the chef, the jester, the gardener etc) to attack the players. Additionally, you could give them a way out that also triggers the trap and, based on how many mirror illusions they looked into, those respective units would come to life.
Great trap! How do you make them look into the traps in order? Or what happens when they look at the B mirror first?????????
Glad you liked the video. Hmmm... viewing the mirrors "out-of-order" is fine, except for when they look into the B Mirror with the basilisk, as you pointed out. Since the "set up" of the trap is over at this point, I'd probably handle that one of two ways.
1. They look into the "B" mirror first, the trap is spring and they fight the basilisk. Then, maybe one of them steps on a pressure plate during combat and all of the other mirrors explode for piercing damage (allowing a Dex save). Or, perhaps an additional basilisk or two leap from the other mirrors.
2. A more likely path, for me, is if they look into "B" mirror first, I might consider changing the location of the basilisk. Swapping the location with, let's say the "R" mirror. It might be a good idea to plan to have these mirrors in a different order to get the full effect of the trap.
Hope that helps, cheers!
Love it! im gonna use this for my upcomming Hollow Knight oneshot!
Awww yeah! Glad I could help. I'm sure your players are gonna love it, lol! Cheers!
@@WallyDM They did. They immediately went for the trapped painting tho. After the Basilisk's revealed themselves they tried to set the other paintings on fire.
@@RottingRavenZ lol. Oh, that's awesome, haha! What a great memory you have created for your group. Well done!
Good one, in the last room the prisoner could be holding some thing small in cupped hands and if the Party lok closely they see that it is a bee. Then the prisoner can step out as a "Bee-holder". a Beholder would be very dangerous with all of those mirrors.
A Bee-Holder... lmao. And yes, very dangerous, indeed. I love it!
I think this is a really cool trap. What would you recommend happening when they look into the mirror on the other side with the npcs?
Ya know, I really hadn't thought of that... Hmmm... What would happen when they look at the NPCs? Perhaps, they only spoke in backwards riddles or utter non-sense? Another way to mislead the characters to think there is more going on here than there actually is? Thank you for the comment! :)
