I once opened a hay loft door on a barn, saw movement in the dark, something came right at me. Was a barn owl just like this one, talons first. I managed to duck in time, luckily. It had it's nest up there and was trying to protect it's chicks. The owner of the barn and I decided to leave them be, and waited for the owlets to fly out before returning. Was a close call, but I still think they're awesome birds.

It's always crazy to me that something with such a humble name, something named for being found in barns, is one of the most magnificent animals on all of earth
There is a pair of owls that nest in my backyard every year to raise their chick. Beautiful birds, I never realized just how big owls truly were until I saw them up close. They're loud too! I always thought hooting would be soft sounding, but it's quite loud, almost booming if you're close to them.

I’ve always loved the look of barn owls. They’re not a species that we see here. We have two species of owl here, the German or laughing owl( thought to be extinct) and the Ruru or Morepork, which is a small native owl species that most people have heard, but few have seen. Just as with our two species of raptors (the harrier hawk from Australia, and the NZ Falcon) it is, in the normal run of things, illegal to have them in your possession, so it’s rare that people get a good look at them. There is I think 1 licensed and practising falconer using NZ Falcons in the Sth Island. They’ve found a niche using the falcons to keep other birds off the ripening fruit in the vineyards of the wine country.
Looks like its bringing out all the Kiwis in Lockdown lol. I didn't know they used the falcons for that purpose here! The more you know! Morepork are so cute though. It really is a pity they're rarely seen.

He's an absolutely beautiful bird! Barn Owls are my personal favorite birds of prey. I do quite like corvids as well as scavenger birds, like vultures and buzzards, as well.
I was out hiking on a day anyone else would have stayed in bed. It was drizzling, misty cold November day. I was near a power line right of way that crossed stream , two giant oaks created an arch over the stream. I paused to light a cigarette, when I heard the weird sound . It literally sounded like awoosh, I stood there trying to figure out what was making that sound. Every 2 seconds that sound , then out of the mist came a great horned owl. It was flying about 30 feet above the forest floor and the sound was caused by water being thrown off of the wings on the down stroke. I was stunned, I had a camera hanging around my neck ,never picked it up and didn't try and get the shot . I also chased a snowy olw around this same area a year later. I think my totem animal is the raptor.
A raven and a white owl...that's my dream. Living in the woods with my books, my brandy, my pipe and my black and white mates. Although I'm still wondering if it's possible to train a bat haha. Greetings from Argentina!
Fabulous video - thanks! Very interesting, learnt lots :-) Wot a lovely little fellow... Looks happy! BTW, 2:58 Agora - ancient Greek for market place, so agoraphobia originally meant fear of being trapped, as in a crowded market-place. It's only in modern times that it's taken on a slightly different meaning, ie fear of open spaces.
🦉💙 🦅Another wonderful educational experience, Thank you very much!!! Your videos are an excellent source of educational information to add to the daily learning public school kids are now stuck at home doing. My daughter is thoroughly enjoying and learning from watching as I am. You offer a lot of options that parents/teachers can use to create a lesson plan/topics to discuss. Discipline from falconry or the bird point of view for example. My daughter had the opportunity to dissect owl pellets in science before the Unfortunate Coronavirus Pandemic swept through our country and schools closed til May 15th as of now, with mandatory Stay-Home-Orders. So I'm ordering owl pellets online to add to her homeschooling experience. Hopefully we get them before they stop the mail delivery. 🤞 Falconry is now added to the list of what I want to be when I grow up. Thanks for the video on the time and dedication it takes to do your work. I think you do deserve a vacation however even I'd it's a tiny one. We enjoy your videos more than you can imagine. You're breath of fresh air and hopefully we'll have the opportunity to see your falconry work in person in the future. Best of luck or break a leg on your next hunt, we're not quite sure of the falconry lingo yet, Hehehe. ✌🤟😇🙆🏼♀️🤩💙💚💛🧡
I'm impressed he's so light! I have a ball python who's about 850 grams, and when he's in a ball he's about as big as Flynn's head, maybe smaller. I've known birds are light, but that gave me a really clear impression of how light!
Okay, comment section, I have a question for you all. Does anyone of you here utterly terrified by barn owls for no reason? Cuz I have this problem since... forever. I was never attacked by one, they don't live in my area, and I saw them IRL only twice in a zoo (that was "fun"). But still, every time I see them, or something resembling them (like stylized artwork), I get scared, and it's "I'm worried for my life" kind of feeling. I think it's the second thing I'm truly scared of in life, the second being loosing "myself" due to some brain condition. I tried professional help, even hypnosis, but to no result. If anyone wonders, I only listened to this video. And friend of mine made me an extension that hides most of pic with barn owls. Which helps a lot, cuz one time I broke a monitor with a keyboard trying to protect myself from a barn owl on a screen >_> Oh, and I like/adore other owls.
Had a Tiny Owl live just above my window in the corner of the second floor under a large overhang on a Water tank overflow pipe and spent many hours watching him/her swoop down and catch mice from around the dustbins . I wrapped and tie wrapped carpet around the pipe for a more comfortable perch . Noisy little fella at times .
Flynn is beautiful and his health is a credit to you. Flynn's assymetrical ears (with respect to up and down) gives him the ability to localise (slightly) in the vertical plane. The structure of Flynn's feathers works three ways. As you mentioned, the first way is to quieten his flight for predation, especially with the spiked profile of the feathers which encourages a laminar flow of air. The feathers also work to reduce wind noise when he is listening for targets. And lastly , the feathers tend to trap air molecules, reducing the propagation velocity of sound at the boundary between his body (near the ears) and the air around him. That slow down in sound effectively increases the distance between his ears for localisation, changing (slightly) or improving his ability to localise. The difference in time of arrival of sound , between the two ears , is accentuated for sounds coming at an angle to Flynn. Sound normally travels at 1mm per 3.45 microseconds. With the feathers , it's slightly longer. Love your talks. George
After befriending a rather mischievous magpie a few years back, I began to understand corvid behavior and, dare I say it, culture. Then my eyes for birds in general were opened, there's so much to them it's hard to not be intrigued. Owls may just be the cats of the Aves, and I do love cats, but my heart belongs to the crows and ravens. We have non-human civilizations around us, albeit in their earliest stages.
Thank you for the video, I am new to your channel, love learning about birds, I have always loved birds, but me being a city boy have not had much exposure. other than the domesticated parrot or things. So keep them coming!

He is beautiful. I found your video earlier about the raven. You've made my day. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to your other and future videos. Greetings from the USA. Stay safe and well. That goes for your viewers too. :)
AWW!! Hello there Flynn! What a sweet boy!
❤😁👍🏻 We have a Barn Owl residing in our hay loft. I've named her/him "Barnie ". Such a beautiful site to see her come and go. Very messy nest area, but we leave it alone. She keeps our horses company,I like to think. 🤣 Thankyou for what you do,I've liked and subscribed. Flynn is beautiful. Barnie is a bit more brownish yellow white. I'm not sure if it's because we reside in upstate New York,USA. 🤔
excellent content lady! well done
He's absolutely stunning..
He's an absolutely beautiful bird! Barn Owls are my personal favorite birds of prey. I do quite like corvids as well as scavenger birds, like vultures and buzzards, as well.
Flynn ...! Named for Errol ? Loving your videos , thanks for sharing !!
So cute! Such pretty birds you have.
Does he know the answer to "How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?"
it takes 3... 1 lick, 2 lick, 3 lick...crunch. ;)
I'm so glad its of help for you and your daughter :)
Which helps a lot, cuz one time I broke a monitor with a keyboard trying to protect myself from a barn owl on a screen >_>
Oh, and I like/adore other owls.
Does Flynn like head scratches? (Also, lovely how much you respect your birds :D)
“Not particularly intelligent” So Owls are the Himbos of the flight capable!? I love it.
Great video and fascinating to learn about such majestic birds. Thank you.
*More Uploads Pleaseeeee* 🦅
We need more Fable too!
Cynthia Dada yep...ravens are awesome. This is my wild Raven Edgar from the lake who I befriended --) ruclips.net/video/QdLqJL5QP8M/видео.html
That was fascinating as you’re so knowledgeable. Flynn is beautiful.
10 minutes well spent 👍 thank you!
Beautiful. One of Gods most interesting birds. Very very quiet.
They are sooooooooo beautiful. I MUST PET HIM NOW!!!!
Yep !!
George
Flynn's lucky you found him.
Lovely bird and a great channel. Subbed. Best regards from Sweden.
Flynn is beautiful
Thank you for the lesson ..
Joe Navy veteran 🇺🇸
Her birds are beautiful!!!
They get to fly and hunt just like they should!!!
He's beautiful. I love owls.
Beautiful bird and fascinating content - thank you! It's one of my dreams to learn falconry so this is a fun introduction right now ⊙>⊙
Thank you for the video, I am new to your channel, love learning about birds, I have always loved birds, but me being a city boy have not had much exposure. other than the domesticated parrot or things. So keep them coming!
My goodness, he is beautiful.
Thank you for the educational opportunity to not only learn about the birds you work with but your profession as well. Your videos are wonderful. Thank you for taking the time to share your world. ✨ ✨ ✨
Wow I love your videos and thank you so much for the education and I really appreciate your love for the birds. Please keep it going
