I am much older than both of you, and was an adult when this song came out. If you have ever been through a divorce, lied to and cheated on, this song means a lot more. Kind of an anthem for showing someone they can't ruin your life and things move on. Probably a breakup was his inspiration for the song.
Great 80s band right here....love that lead guitar....take me back...take me back...take me back....love the transitions....harmonies are great also...i graduated in 1982...thank for the reaction
That was totally chopped at the beginning. They took out the big keyboard and guitar moment that really makes the song for me. Steve Howe's guitar lines were so melodic in this song, and as good as anything he did with Yes.
Also one of my favorite bands from the 80s. This album was a monster (no bad tracks). I remember buying it the same day it came out on the recommendation of a store clerk that was playing it in the background on the store speakers. I was hooked! I could not leave the parking lot of this music store without listening to the whole album on my car tape deck.
So, I, as Rich, loved this band. They did in fact Make a comeback in 2006 with all the original members. Tour with new albums and the Like. In 2013 Steve Howe the Guitarist "retired" but ASIA continued with a new guitar player, Sam. In 2017 John Wetton, the Bass player and lead singer passed away. Rest in peace and thank God for ASIA. *** ASIA was formed as a "super group", as all the members were from successful other bands previously. John Wetton (King Crimson), Jeff Downes (The Buggles & Yes), Steve Howe (Yes) & Carl Palmer (Emmerson, Lake & Palmer). If you listen carefully enough you can hear each distinct individuality of the members in ASIAs' songs.
Asia has always seemed very Ethereal and Groovy to Me. I didnt even buy one till about 1996 or so, "Then And Now" but I was hooked instantly! Don't Cry is another of my favs :D
How does no one know that this song was the anthem for the 1980s Olympics and those were some of the actual olympic gymnists...smh. But thank you so much for reacting to Asia. I love that band!
FYI - there are actually *two* bands called "Asia" right now - original members Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes have carried the original banner with Billy Sherwood and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal as Asia, while former singer/frontman John Payne (1991 - 2006) has formed "Asia featuring John Payne" and performs Asia songs. Keep your eyes open and you might get to see one or the other - or even both - in the next year or two!
Asia--- How did she live through never hearing Asia? ( I know-- sheltered life).. Thank You! Faithful follower, here from the beginning...Love you, both!
Love it, Rich! I have long been a die-hard metal guy. Makes my wife cringe, listening to my stuff, as our musical tastes are vastly different. But over the years, I've been able to throw her for a few loops, when certain songs pop up like an ABBA, or Bread tune, and I turn to her, "I've always loved this song!" Perplexed look on her face, "Huh? You?" This is another one...I too have always loved this one...cranked to 11. Had me nostalgic with this vid. :)
Very interesting! I never had access to MTV in its early days (hubby did) so I never saw this before today but enjoyed the album for itself. But now watching this I get that teen boy tie-in with what hubby said was a 'popular' 'exercise' series of women in leotards doing aerobics or gymnastics set to peppy music back then. Draw your own conclusion. ;) Thank you for showing this version of this song I've never seen.
Wow, yet another great choice that evokes so many good memories from the 1980s. Great reaction as always and thank you for bringing these great bands to a new audience.
Not sure if you listened to any of their later stuff but on Aqua, Al Pitrelli plays guitar. If you are wondering where you heard that name, well he was in Savatage, TSO, Megadeth, and Alice Cooper to name a few. Sadly the CD came out when prog-rock and 80's music was taboo. I had to buy it as an import. Great CD especially Someday and Who Will Stop the Rain. If you're ever in a mood give those a shot.
"You're leaving now, it's in your eyes There's no disguising it It really comes as no surprise To find that you planned it all along..." Damn. I've had that too. Nasty surprise as she smiled the whole time.
Rock in Peace John Wetton. I Believe Steve Howe from Yes later joined the band and some well known others throughout. Awesome 80`s Band and later. Which Leads me to another Kickin` 80`s band and still Plays Today....Boys From Louisiana... #Zebra Who`s Behind the Door from Zebra their first album. Will not Disappoint .Luv You Guys! L.J.
Looking back we were so blessed to be part of the MTV generation! Such awesome music and I think it is easy to forget that so many people, especially the younger generation, have not heard these! You guys should absolutely have one day of the week dedicated to the 80s! Rich you know all the great stuff out of that time even though the videos were corny the music is STILL wonderful! It's an idea. How about "dont know what you got till its gone" by Cinderella? One of my favorite ballads of all time! Nobody had a voice like his
#TheCars "moving in stereo" .... "dangerous type" ... "double trouble" ... "drive" ... so i left a few songs but they are my favorite band, they've always been there when i needed to just disappear and think for a while. Once im back to level set, i can get back to life.
If you are such a fan of Roger Dean's LP covers, try Greenslade - Bedside Manners are Extra, and please show Kel more of Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Centre of the Earth, Six Wives of Henry VIII, White Rock and many more LPs that he has recorded.
I can't overstate what this band meant to teenage me. This band was THE gateway drug to my prog obsession. Indeed EVERYTHING about my future musical identity and my personal music journey was shaped by this band. From here I explored Steve Howe's YES, Carl Palmer's Emerson, Lake & Palmer, John Wetton's King Crimson as well as an awesome band called "U.K." (Quite underappreciated and arguably a sort of more proggy "proto-ASIA". Both were quasi "Supergroups" as well.), And Geoff Downes' time with YES as well as The Buggles" ("Video Killed the Radio Star" being their big hit). My brother took me to see ASIA for my birthday back in 2012. I'm glad I got to see Wetton before he passed. A voice so distinctive and wonderful. I miss him terribly.
Arguably, one could call this a "supergroup" with members coming from different bands (Yes and/or Kansas or Styx if memory serves). They had three or four top ten hits off this LP. Was the first reserved seating show I'd ever been to (I suppose that fans were getting smashed and injured on the front barrier because of the crush of people trying to get to the front). Second row, center stage... after camping out for two days in line waiting for tickets to go on sale lol. One hell of a party for the 3-4 hundred fans sitting on the sidewalk next to the Civic Center.
#Asia - Heat Of The Moment (must do) (Kitchener, Ontario, Canada - eh!) - I know it's not a first reaction, but it's a beautiful song! There may be individuals out there that aren't aware of it's existence!! This was a pleasant surprise!! I still remember when my sister (13 years older than I) introduced me to Asia - I think I was 5... Heat of the Moment and Only Time Will Tell were spun on the turntable 'ad nauseum', but such set in motion my love of 80's synth rock. What a beautiful tune. The video was 'meh', but I loved the harmonies & musical performance! Great reaction guys!
Loved loved loved your expression when you realized this is a short version and didn’t hear Steve Howe’s wizardry which we all love on this song🤣🤣🤣👍 indeed the single best song from Asia👍👍
Back when MTV played music videos. Rich is about my age (1 year older) And, for anyone in that age bracket, MTV was the single biggest exposure to music - more so than radio - because you'd go from Asia, to The Cars, to Michael Jackson, to Judas Priest, to Paul McCartney, to Blondie, to Gary Numan, to Flock of Seagulls, to Def Leppard, to God only knows what else... and you sucked it all in.
"Raoul and the Kings of Spain" is a hidden gem too. Pick any song, I'd recommend "Me and My Big Ideas" or "Falling Down". "Sorry" is a big surprise, I can hear Bowie singing this. Since we're talking TFF, great duet with Oleta Adams "Woman in Chains".
Cool! Anything and everything 80's is good to me. Hell in the 80's I even still occasionally listen to pop so, metal, rock, glam metal etc. is all good. Thanks for doing this one. More of these would be great! Idunno what happened to Kel on this one. she didn't react, she just went stunned hahaha. Show her some more of this style 80's. It's all good too!

They said the gymnast was just there to appear interesting to the viewer. There was no ulterior motive. However, Rich's suggested explanation seems entirely plausible.
