Why We Don't Drink Coffee at Mass

- Leaving our coffee cups outside - It’s for a far greater reason than just fasting for an hour before Communion. Fr. Mike reminds us that we all have a vital role to play in the Mass, and it’s probably more significant than any of us realized!

Fr. Mike, in order to be Biblically correct, I always make the coffee for my wife after Mass. Because the scriptures clearly say, "Hebrews".
Congrats
Hahahahha
LOLOL!!! I LOVE PUNS!!!! (especially Catholic puns!)
You should share that with Father Mike so he can use it in a video! LOL
The name of our church coffee shop is "Higher Ground".
The thought of having tea or coffee during Mass never crossed my mind
Me neither. It seems more strange that other Christians do.
A very odd thing indeed....
Cringy Man ikr?
@@davidhunter2393 I’m to blown away by the sanctity of it. Im still ambivalent in my belief but you can’t deny the power within a Catholic Parish
I thought this video was a prank by Fr Schmitz... Here in Europe the idea to bring drinks or food to Catholic mass would be considered absurd. I'm amazed that this needs explanation.
This is why I'm converting to the Catholic Church: the reverence.
Protestant here.
Honestly, that's a very good point.
Proper reverence is extremely important.
Too bad I don't find Catholic doctrine reliable.
That’s the whole reason I converted! :)
@CodingCrusader1095 Noted. Thanks
There are several. I can list the ones that are most prevalent in my mind.
1) Purgatory.
2) Perpetual virginity of blessed Mary.
3) Praying to the saints for intercession.
4) The catholic concept of grace, especially the vault of grace.
5) The authority of the Pope.
6) Not attending mass is a sin.

I love this. This thought never crossed my idea. (current Protestant, exploring the Catholic Church). Definitely won't be drinking coffee any more while in church service. The reverence of the Catholic Church is what's drawing me in to the Church. God bless you Father Mike and offering these resources to people like me.

and me, Sarah….
My husband and I were both Lutherans. I knew a lot of Catholics and they always seemed to be such nice people. There was a common thread that I noticed as the years went by. A couple of my Catholic friends suggested converting but, at the time, I didn't pursue it. Flash forward ahead many years. Husband and I weren't active in church for awhile. Then we relocated to a different state. Attended a couple of Lutheran services. At the first church, we weren't allowed to participate in communion because it was a particular synod. At the second church, an entire family filled up the pew in front of us. A little girl sat in front of us (about age 8) wearing a sequin dress that sparkled. She didn't sit still for one minute during the entire service. Her father sat right next to her and did nothing. For the entire service, I sat there and could not pay attention to anything besides this little girl thrashing about. We then attended mass at the large Catholic Church in town. We had attended mass there on several occasions before that. A young boy (about 10) was stationed by the big front door and was the first greeter. Throughout the entire mass, other than babies crying sometimes, it was quiet with everyone paying attention and participating. There was no comparison. We were greeted into the Catholic church with open arms. We became confirmed this past Easter. I felt a calling to do so.
@@kellilien1736 a warm welcome home to you and your husband ❤.
Come on in for the big win, sis!
Wow father mike. i have lived my entire life blind to the mass. You have taught me what it is suppose to be. this video i pray goes viral, there are many who would benefit from this podcast. Keep teaching us Father Mike, you have been blessed with the holy spirit for sure. I call you my John the Baptist, you have given me renewed life and faith in the church again. thank you and bless you
Wow - I was only expecting a talk about coffee. This may be the most profound and inspirational six minutes of RUclips I have personally experienced. Thank you Father Mike.
Im not a chatholic but I just love the way you present God's message... God bless you.
I have seen "Catholics" walk into Mass with coffee and then get offended when asked to either get rid of it or leave. At a number of Churches here in NYC I see people talking on cell phones or just plain talking during Mass. Receiving is another disgrace. The bottom line is I blame the 'Church of Nice' priests and bishops for failing in appropriate catechesis. Kids that do come in do not genuflect and if they do, it is not to the tabernacle. Parents allow their kids to play electronic games during Mass and priests do not want to offend them. Offend the parent, hell, who is really being offended here, GOD! To reiterate, American society has lost the knowledge of WHO IS IN FRONT OF THEM, who they are receiving in the EUCHARIST. Thus, we see a hemorrhage of Catholics not attending while their children are "Spiritual." I had one person tell me she is "Spiritual." When I responded, "So are demons," it did not sit well with her. So again, your talk of the coffee, I can understand it from another denomination, but in a Roman Catholic Church by Catholics, there is a MAJOR IDENTITY PROBLEM in CATECHESIS. God bless Father.
okay, I understand where you're coming from and agree with most, but gentle priests are not ignorant priests and children and people can be in a stage of learning. No one goes from secular to absolute Catholic in a second, and it's a learning curve
I agree that it is a catechism issue. We need to go back to true, detailed and ongoing catechism
@@ruthpyrah4059 That doesn't mean kids or anyone new to the Catholic faith don't have to show reverence right away. Catholic parents should be teaching and showing reverence from the time their kids are infants.
Sounds like they see it as a concert or something...
@@ruthpyrah4059 I think giving a young kid a coloring book during a sermon might be better as then they'd at least hear what's happening around them. Electronic games completely draw one in. At least that's how parents do it in my protestant church. A baby room or coloring pencils. And kids who are school age usually participate like adults do.

Father Mike, thank you for blessing my daughter's Rosary. We're big fans!
My local church has tea, coffee and cookies after the Sunday service (protestants), but it's after the service, the church is very cold (we're in Northern Europe) and it's a great way to promote fellowship and talk to newcommers. Having tea or coffee during would be considered disrespectful though.
Same at my local parishin Belgium
After is perfect - Catholics do that too. The problem is drinking it during the service - which does happen 😳
I have been to a church that did that as well, after the service. Completely different then bringing it into the sancturary where we worship

Came for the coffee story, stayed because you have, may I dare say, blown my mind. It is these tidbits of information/theological teachings that give insight of how incredibly tangible the Lord has become for us. The more I learn the more I’m hooked.
Look up his presentation at the Basilica at the University of Notre Dame. It will completely blow you away.
Thanks Father Mike for providing a deeper meaning to Mass and my responsibility.
Honestly, you did blow my mind Fr. Mike. I have been wondering for a long time why the Divine Mercy Chaplet said, Eternal Father, I offer you the body, blood, soul, and divinity of your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. How could I offer Jesus to God the Father? it seems like as a kingdom priest, it makes sense that anyone who is baptized is able to pray this prayer.
I watched the video on going to bed on time and now it's two hours past my bedtime and I've spent the entire time watching these videos.
Thanks.
Hi Fr. Mike, I was wondering if you could please make a video discussing mental health- specifically how Catholics who are suffering from mental health issues can overcome them? Thanks.
You can ask your parish priest or call your diocese. You can use catholictherapists.com to find a provider near you who is faithful to the Church's teachings. Also, catholiccounselors.com offers counseling by phone.
I hope and pray you find what you're looking for, whether for you or someone you know.

Please do not write those kind of comments on my post, I do not appreciate them, nor do I agree with you morally/theologically. Have a nice day.
In recent times, I came across an interesting revelation; I participate in the Mass fully; I respond and pray and sing fully, and with feeling. I always have. Going to Mass is the highlight of my week. The revelation that I experienced is to go through the Mass in the same full way, only with my eyes closed. I open them during the consecration, and the sign of peace, (don't want to be rude). Having my eyes closed all that time has added so much. I am not distracted by so much that is going on around me, but mainly, the words of the Mass gone from being rote words read out of a book, that we are all saying together, to being an intimate conversation that The Beloved is having with His bride. She speaks to Him. He speaks to her. The Creed is now in first person, which really adds to that. She, the bride, renews her vows to Him every week. Thank you Lord for the gift of the Mass!
I'm not Catholic. I am Christian, I just have to say I truly enjoy and learn from your channel. May God bless you.
If you are not a Catholic Christian that means you are a Protestant Christian.
Catholic is christian. Its a denomation.

I've never been disappointed by a Fr. Mike video, but you really knocked it out of the park on this one!
Fr. Mike,
Thank you for making such informative and wonderful videos. I share them with my 14 year old son who just got Confirmed in May 2017. It is an awkward age for him, he has so many questions I don't have answers to and I often find myself searching your videos for guidance.
Thank you again for posting these messages.

VoidtexxMom, you're doing great!
This dude also has a GIFT for EXPLAINING Biblical concepts in a way that many Catholic priests (and protestant pastors that are fundamentally in agreement with on) do not. Love him.
WOW that means he is now 19 years old!!!!! Unbelievable! How time flies!!!! How is he doing?!🙏🏻
I'm Christian and one of the foundations of our church is to worship. I've never seen anyone having a coffee or something while inside the church. There are shops in the building but you cannot take them into the place of worship.
Love that! "I'm a Christian" no sign of division there. And you're right! I've been to Pentecostal, Protestant and Methodist Churches and it's considered disrespectful to eat during the service
Hi Father Mike :D The first thought that came inside my head when I read the video's title was that we don't drink coffee at mass because we want to keep the solemnity and holiness of the mass. I'm gonna finish the video now haha - Sophia from the Philippines

When my husband and I were looking for a home church, we attended a church where they actually took a "coffee break" in the middle of the service. The congregation brought their coffee and donuts back to their seats to consume while listening to the sermon. Yeah....that church wasn't for us.

Greetings from LA! Your awsome Father Mike!
Mass is about waking up and smelling the coffee. But not in that sense...

How about waking up and smelling the incense?
That pun was so bad it HAD to come from an Irishman...
Father, I must confess I find a lot of your teachings cropping up in my RE classes and especially today when I taught Liturgy of the Word for our kids. Thank you so much! You are inspiring a new generation.
Thank you for posting a video about this topic!!!! What an awesome and clear explanation of our role as priests as well!
My Lutheran Church had coffee and pastries after the service, which encouraged parishioners to stay for awhile and get to know one another. At my husband’s Catholic Church, it’s a mad dash for the parking lot once the Mass is concluded, or in some cases, before the second collection is taken, lol.
Before the virus we had coffee and donut holes on a stick.(free). You should start one up! Maybe your parish doesn’t have enough helpers!
Hi, Father. I just wanted to say that I have been watching your videos for quite some time, and while I don't agree with all of your view points, I do love your videos and the kind approach you have on controversial topics. Although I am no longer Catholic, I truly appreciate the love you spread, and wish you the best. May God bless you.
How thoughtful and kind! Thank you for taking the time to say that and comment, Dizzee. Really appreciate that and hope that the videos could continue to be helpful to you in some way. You are in our prayers!
We show up at Mass, and we just watch. Thank you!!!!!!
God bless you, Father Mike! Love watching your videos. Yours and Bishop Barron's Word on Fire videos. Everything is genuine. The clarity & intelligence displayed is beautiful. It's definitely helping me on this renewed journey of my faith. I had left the Church some years ago. I didn't understand it & was ignorant. This is precisely why people leave the Church - they were weak in the faith. But having returned last year, especially from October and on, I've grown more serious. Always looking to Jesus & never looking back. I'm praying the Rosary everyday, and thanks be to God.
Beautiful explanation!
Thank You Father Mike for these videos! They have really guided me on this journey called life. :)
Thank you for that beautiful explanation of full participation in the sacrifice of the Mass.

Wait, wait, wait....there are churches that have coffee shops?! What is THAT?
Even many conservative theology non-catholic church have a volunteer coffee and snack table before worship, or even just host it in a cinema with the concession stand open.
The real question is whether any church that hold a mass (catholic, Orthodox, and including those that have no presence of Christ, Anglican and Lutheran) will allow coffee in their pew.

Another amazing video that explains my faith. Thanks and God bless you Father Mike.
I love these videos...
another weekly treat, thank you Ascension presents! I just wish that the church/priests would mention every now and then to catholics that we are part of mass not spectators. growing up in my country, we used to shout the great amen, like we mean to be there. we pray, we sing, we SHAKE hands to share the peace of Christ, and we absolutely don't carry conversations in the church....We have reverence for the Holy house of God. The church is not as beautiful as here but man, do we show reverence. When I came here I was perplex that most people don't shake hands, some turned away when I offered the peace of Christ extending my hand... One would think that they're racists but they're not, they don't shake hands among themselves so it has nothing to do with who I am lol. The whole point is I think something needs to be done, we need to understand that when we go to mass, it's not about us going for entertainment/relaxation/obligation. It's all about God, so let us show Him that we came for Him, to see Him and be with Him. We don't need to be cool in the church, we get to be cool elsewhere, all week. But on Sunday, the day of the Lord, let us be attentive to Him, hearts and minds focus on HIM!
Dieu Avec they don't shake hands for tbe peace? I would faint 😲
don't ask me why, I have no idea. germ phobia maybe?
Nobody shook hands in a Catholic Church before Vat 2. Frankly, it disrupts the solemnity of the Mass. Greet your fellow parishioners heartily over coffee and donuts after Mass, or find a more solemn way of exchanging what used to be called the "Kiss of Peace." Instead, Fr. Noname leaves the sanctuary (not supposed to happen), shakes half the parishioners' hands, which he can do AFTER Mass.
Thank you Father Mike for your guidance over the years... God bless and keep you on your journeys..🕊️
Father Mike, I'm not Catholic but I am enjoying your videos so much. You explain things in ways that the pastors I have known in my churches don't. This message about being present during mass and not just coming to watch really hit a chord with me. I am guilty of this. Many times I have gone to church and sat and waited out the time of the service and then went home without any genuine worship coming from my heart. Thank you for reminding me that we are called to participate in worshipping of of Lord. God bless you!
Bringing coffee or any drink with you during ANY religious service just sounds plain disrespectful. Do they have cup holders in the pews or seats?? Times have really changed. Sad to hear that worship has become so casual and non chalant to some people...probably the same people sitting there texting instead of giving their undivided attention. Very sad...
yes, I agree. What's next: popcorn? you are there to be one with a higher power, not watch a movie and be entertained.
Too late for some non-catholic church that have Conservative/Evangelical theology. When this article use "popcorn in the pews" (www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2009/january/18.16.html), they are not kidding. For crying out now, even Billy Graham's Crusade meet up are like that -- bring your popcorn, churros, hot dog, hamburger, nachos and cheese, and soda.
But remember: There are no Eucharist outside of Catholic and Orthodox, where Christ is truly present. While some of the more basic theology can be acceptable, after a certain point you just have to agree to disagree.
Brooke Benton If that drink is water, then that's the one and ONLY exception.
I remember back when I was a baptist, bringing coffee into the church service and feeling nervous when I entered the sanctuary expecting the usher to stop me, but no such thing. Now as a Catholic, well, it's different.
We are asked NOT to bring it into the sanctuary.
How does one participate more fully at mass as a kingdom priest? Suggestions on Some practical ways of doing that will be helpful. Thank you @fr mike
Yes! We all need catechism 101 to rediscover the beauty of our Catholic faith.
This is why I like your videos :) Your enthusiasm is a wonderful thing to watch when so many videos are full of nothing but droning on and on about this or that one tiny thing. Devotional acts - especially something like Mass - should be celebrated. People pray a rosary but they mumble through it etc. Mysticism is missing from the Church. Priests such as yourself who bring enthusiasm to something which is ordinarily seen as boring - eg. the Mass (at least I know when I was a kid I thought it was boring) - are refreshing. One can not make themselves a fitting vessel for the Holy Spirit -- one can not come to know with certainty the Will of God and what their purpose is here and now -- without feeling joy, love, and excitement in the process of becoming that vessel.
Thank you for making these videos Father. Please keep up the enthusiasm. It will be key to rekindling the estaic experieice that religion was in the past. When passion, emotion, and love were central. Today, sadly, it feels like most go to Mass out of a feeling of obligation. It's an opportunity to celebrate, to prepare yourself to receive the Holy Spirit and in doing so to learn ones True purpose on earth.
This is such a wonderful reminder. Thank you, Father. The Church really needs a renewal of understanding about the priestly role of the laity and the service of one's life to God. It is so foundational!
I never knew coffee shops in churches was a thing

What is a Chaldean Catholic? Sounds like another denomination of catholic. I thought you all were 1. And you fuss about protestants

# Ask father Mike: Why is infant baptism so important?
The Catholic bible omits Acts 8:37 which is a key verse in baptisms. Since they omit that one must be a believer, the church recognizes infant baptism by omission.
The Douay-Rheims Bible is Catholic and it doesn't omit Acts 8:37 yet the NIV is a Protestant Bible and it does omit it.
BAPTISM is to Christian as circumcision is to a jew !
That's the reason why St Peter & Paul took the decision of abolishing circumcision for Christians.
Once Baptised you are a Christian and have to follow the instructions given by Jesus.
Baptism does not mean immersion. Read 1 Cor10:1-2. Those who followed Moses through the Sea were Baptised as followers of Moses. The ones who were immersed were pharoah's men, even though they followed Moses ( I mean came behind him) !!
Because they does not possess any imortal sin yet.
Father Mike has the patience of a Saint. The woman must have thought she was going to the Evangelical "entertainment service" or Bible study. Look at the comment 2 days before me. I was raised Lutheran and would not dream of walking in to a church with a cup of coffee. And to think this person is Catholic and doesn't know about the hour fasting requirement. No wonder Catholics are losing this battle. We need to educate ourselves, set better examples to other Christians and know we are going to Mass to praise God. Poor Mary weeps for our Church.
She is not a Catholic, but protestant, she was invited by a Catholic to attend Mass.
Church is also a meeting place, after mass I see no problem to gather with a refreshment.
@@yvoferdinandvanderhoek1027 After Mass if we have participated with our hearts, it is the moment to pray because you are the closest to Jesus after communion. I am called to plunge into prayer. The sweetest prayer level I can achieve is always after Mass, so I will not miss it for the world.
@@carlagrado7201 I think my words might have been confusing, with after mass I meant to include your prayers.
@@yvoferdinandvanderhoek1027 I guess maybe I did not explain myself very well.. after Mass I sit and pray 5 decades of the rosary and meditate on the misteries to the deepest level I can reach. I am really not interested in talking to anyone but God after Mass. I don't like rushing out, I don't like talking and I don't need any kind of food or refreshment after communion. I like to meditate on the rosary. Those that don't do it are really missing out on a precious moment with Jesus and Mary.
The 'Amen' at the end of the eucharistic prayer will never be a mere simple 'Amen' to me again. Another illuminating vido by Fr Mike.
I was already aware of this through the teachings of Padre Pio, but I had forgotten. Thank you for reminding me of something so fundamentally important!
Do people actual ask this?
The Eucharistic fast, is it an hour before mass or an hour before receiving Jesus ?
Alejandra Barajas before Eucharist
Alejandra Barajas hour before Jesus. I'd usually say stop eating at least 15-20 mins before mass to be safe
Excellent description of worship over watching during mass!

Father mike i have an important question about you faith if you need to accept Jesus to enter heaven then what happened to all the people in the old testament and could people like the prophet Samuel or Moses or Abraham become saints and/or why aren't they? i just think it would make an interesting topic for a future video and would help explain things to catholics protestants and people like me thanks for considering! And don't just disregard this comment just because of my photo but rather look at me as a curious person.
Kevin Fernandez are you proselytizing to me because i just asked a question?
The Pagan Conway he just answered your question
Old Testament saints like Samuel and Moses rested in a part of hell called "the limbo of the fathers" until the time of the crucifixion, when Jesus delivered them and opened heaven to man, an event known as "the harrowing of hell." Many Old Testament figures have feast days on the Catholic calendar like other saints (e.g., Samuel on August 20, Moses on September 4, and Abraham on October 9).
The Pagan Conway Those in the OT did not go to Heaven until they followed Jesus into Heaven, 40 days after His Resurrection. They were in Abraham's Bosom (the Limbo of The Fathers) before that. It wasn't Heaven, as they weren't with God, but, they knew that they would be in Heaven at some point.
Moses is a Saint in the Catholic calendar. I am not sure if Samuel of the Old Testament has a day. Adam does not.
Good point my dear .Because Enoch was taken up he walked with God .David had the holy spirit in him
Which at the time was rarely given out .So they say it was limbo .honestly who are we to judge Gods hart .But that the story cause the gates of heaven .were closed at the time .But when christ died .Lord have mercy .The tent in the temple was tore into .The earth shoke
The men that were garding the cross got on there knees .Two sinners on both sides of him one believed Jesus .one did not .Jesus said to the one that believe him basicly i see you in heaven .Pick your battales on that one but I belive the were waiting for Jesus acourding to the law .And Jesus he was a rebel bad boy if you like bad boys heres your man .he ate with siners He partied at the wedding.he was looking for people like me and you .Reg folk to love them to be with them to let them know .He care .So as i said its a matter of how you see it if we look at the law we know they were waiting for Jesus too .I hope this helps Gbu
Took you 4 tries to say "Are you ready for something to blow your mind?" XD
Thank you Fr. Mike! Great video! When I go to Mass, I will think about what you said.
Thank you father, your words are very inspiring, I felt each and every point sink deep into my soul and I'm surely going to learn to embrace my priesthood as we should, Praise the lord!
Does this apply to chewing gum too?
Julia Lindell Ignoring the other comment, I would say yeah it does.
yes cause you're swallowing sugar
Yes.
I think it's less of "what goes into you body" and more of "why you are doing this." In Chinese, they actually translate the Eucharist Fast as "empty heart fast". Chewing gum will definitely take your mind off. Plus, you know, eucharist.
Yes, not necessarily because it's against church teaching, but because the people who are sitting near you don't want to listen to you chewing on gum. Plus, when it's time for Holy Communion you, what, spit your gum out somewhere? Ew. Seems disrespectful not only to the Mass, but to those around you.
Fr. mike, sometimes you speak too fast.
Not to be disrespectful at all please. Try the captions
Love your enthusiasm continue this Evangelization
Our local parish offers free coffee every fourth sunday of the month at the end of Mass. It's a nice way for the congregation to talk to or meet each other.
Key word “end”
Catholics have become too much like Protestants. We should actively worship. Protestants watch a performance, expect to be entertained.
Isaiah Footnote Thats not true maybe some do but not all. I'm certain some Catholics are the same.
Dylan, it most certainly is true: ranging from evangelical protestants who need stage performances, through to fundamentalist protestants who need ranting preachers to arouse emotions. So much distracting effort needed and poured into filling the hole at the base of protestantism.
yes, some Catholics are the same, but that isn't Catholicism, that's to do with puerile level of faith of some Catholics. It is intrinsic to protestantism, but not to Catholicism. Protestants in their pride and rage threw out too much.
Isaiah Footnote sorry you are wrong on this. Christianity is being influenced by Catholicism.
I think there is a lot of generalization and accusation here. I know there are Catholics (I'm guilty too) who at least some of the time are simply attending because we are supposed to. I am sure there are protestants who attend services for the emotional experience. I think we can switch those statements and they would still be true. I have known many fine Christians both protestant and Catholic, and we are all the body of Christ. Accusation and generalization will not bring the body back together. Argument is good, but we need to ground it in love for one another.
Father Mike, you are the real deal priest. God bless you really! I can see your passion for Jesus and the faith in your eyes, it’s like they sparkle when you talk about them.
This guy seems really fake to me. He lies to you with a smile on his face
Hi, Fr. Mike,
This is an excellent explanation. Thank you!
Thank you so much for providing so much!!
Thank you Fr. Mike. I read some of the comments and had mixed emotions. A number of people expressed interest in the Catholic church because of the reverence. As an old-timer, I am often saddened to see how the reverence I grew up with appears to be waning in so many Masses (i.e., coming to Mass in jeans - or worse, talking out loud in church, intrusive music during Holy Communion, etc.)
I did the Bible in a Year with you and am now doing the Catechism in a Year. During this time of Eucharistic Revival, I hope more clergy "review" the Catechism with you and bring that reverence back. 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you Father Mike. I’ve learned so much from your videos
I learned more in 6 minutes from this video than I ever did in catachism. (Didnt have a catholic school where I grew up)
Thank you for explaining it so eloquently and thoroughly about our priesthood.
This is beautiful!
