As I am reclaiming my catholic faith and heritage, I was looking to learn why not to eat meat on fridays. If I want to try and live my life as a reflection of Christs’, I will simply fast on fridays. Fasting keeps me clear minded. This state of mind helps me focus on hard work and get more done. Something akin to bearing my cross weirdly gets easier when fasting. So for now on, fridays will be fasting days. Thank you Father 😊

First of all, Protestantism didn’t even exist until the 1500’s when (edit: Martin Luther) nailed his 95 Thesis to the door of the church. The Catholic church is AGAINST worshiping Mary or any other saints and claims them that do to be heretics. Worship belongs to Christ alone. Jesus is depicted FREQUENTLY in Catholic art and stories as an adult and this argument is jut asinine, especially considering that Catholics take the Eucharist/communion every Mass in front of a crucifix and recite the Lord’s Prayer… all of which are focusing on events that happened when Jesus was an ADULT. Many within the Church HAVE apologized for things like the Inquisition. On March 12, 2000, Pope John Paul II publicly apologized for that and many similar sins done by the Church. While they did refuse to translate Scripture from Latin, they reversed their position on this not long after the Protestant Reformation began at the Council of Trent and other councils. And realistically, most in the Middle Ages couldn’t read anyway in their own language. You don’t have to be Catholic, but when you refuse to educate yourself on these things and spout off nonsense like this it shows your resistance to Catholicism isn’t based in anything but lies handed down from others to you. It shows you never bothered to look into these things and actually find out what the Catholic church actually teaches.
I still don't eat meat on Fridays, because I love meat. At least, I try not to eat meat on Fridays. Its a suitable penance for me. Love the videos, Fr. Mike.

Fr. Mike can you please do a video on speaking in tongues? My mother is Protestant and I know what her church teaches but I need to know what the Catholic Church teaches.
Well, I'm by no means an expert, but as I understand it the Catholic Church doesn't have a lot of OFFICIAL teachings on tongues (I'm talking about things that have been infallibly declared), but there are Bible passages that talk about speaking in tongues that are helpful: see 1 Corinthians 12-14. Remember than in all spiritual gifts, the goal is love. In general, I think the Church thinks that using the gifts of the Holy Spirit is a good thing; I'm pretty sure Pope Francis himself is a Charismatic. Also, look up the Catholic Charismatic Renewal; it is generally associated with Catholics who pray in tongues (as well as those who use the other Charismatic gifts).
I was ina charismatic grouo and now i know why it is cationed. Those gifts have been used to seperate. But luckily, i was able to see that before it was too late for me. I was going down the same route. If not worse. Its best to charise the gifts, for love. Most importantly for God alone at times. And if God permits, it will come out in the right place and the right time. But by the gift of the spirit.
Speaking in tongues is a gift. The other side of the gift is that someone has to understand what is being said. If a person just mutters garble, then it is not speaking in tongues. Rather, it may be hypocritical. God gives this gift to reach out to his people. Pentecost was a day where the Apostles taught, but the listeners heard the message clearly in their native tongues. So the question is: "When you speak in tongues, who receives the message and who understands it." Peace be with you.

I grew up a Catholic but I was never really taught about these things. Im currently in the process of working on my faith because I cannot allow myself to just be a mediocre Catholic. I have no excuse. Im blessed to grow up Catholic but the onus is on me to constantly work on being holy.
The bishops in England and Wales have told us to stop eating meat on Fridays again. Growing up in the 60s I loved Fridays because I prefer fish to meat. My mother also cooked meatless meals with cheese or eggs on Fridays too which I loved. I have never understood the no meat on Friday rule/discipline. I used to eat meat on Friday! As a catholic, i didn’t realized that i am making sins against Christ Jesus and to our God the father! I didn’t know also that i was not following our God the father law’s and disobeying our father rules! Our Christ Jesus died for us on the cross, and sacrifice his life for us, and saves us for all our sins. So, i have to make a sacrifice also for our Christ Jesus and to our God the father for not eating meat on Friday even though its not Good Friday! Im not catholic. Im christian. Im always confused with how catholics practice their faith. For christians, if its not in the bible then we dont worry about it. For example, "dont eat meat on friday" is not in the bible so we say theres no point in not eating meat on friday. BUT, this video actually helped me understand quite a bit. I think we christians and catholics can agree on how important it is to have a close relationship with God. Theres that old saying of "youd understand me better if you walked a mile in my shoes." Well if i understood this video correctly, not eating meat on friday is sorta like that. How can we have a close as possible relationship with God if we never walk a mile in his shoes, figuratively, of course. So choosing something that makes us "suffer" on friday the way Jesus suffered on Friday is a way for us to put ourselves in his shoes and become closer with him. I love it. As i said, im not Catholic, dont think i ever will be. As far as i can see, both christians and catholics believe in the same God and in the same bible so im not sure the titles really matter. But Father mike your videos are definitley giving me a better understanding of why catholics do the things they do, and your videos are helping me grow stronger in my own faith. Thank you 🙏
How many people actually "do" a penance in lieu of eating meat? It is still recommended as a practice by the USCCB. I love having Fridays as a penitential day but I wonder how many practicing Catholics are actually aware of this.

Father, the discipline of the Church never "changed" about fasting of meet on fridays. But, as you said, it can be switched by something else, but in a situation that it's not possible to fast of meat. Although, that was not very clear on your video that the discipline is the same(do not eat meat on fridays). We can even become a source of inspiration to others( to lead them to Christ , of course)if for example your friends invite you for a barbecue or a pizza with sausage on friday, and you say that you don't eat meat on that day as a sacrifice for Christ. At least, that would make them give it a thought. Besides that, thank you always for the videos you make. They are a great source for us in our faith. There is nothing wrong with using it as an example to start curiosity about our faith. But if they ever do ask for explanation, include the other way that it can be disciplined. The rest will be up to them and only should be up to them and God alone after that. God is simple sometimes too.
Before the 60s and Vatican II, every Friday of the year was a day of fast and abstinence. Lent was nothing from a warm blooded animal all of the 40 days. After Vatican II, only the regular Fridays of Lent were days of abstinence. Only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday were of fast and abstinence. The reason for the relaxation was "the constitution of Man was weakened by two World Wars in the first half of the century". That's what changed.

Jesus says that people will fast once the spouse (Him) will be taken away. Doing something every Friday to honor His sacrifice is in no way criticizable - whether you are catholic or not. All Christian thrive to honour God. Doing a sacrifice to get united to Jesus's suffering will help you in your spiritual life. Remembering the "crazy" things that God has made for us (Incarnation, Passion, etc.) will only increase your love for God. We have crucified Jesus with our sins..maybe fasting from meat (or something else) on Friday is not such a big thing, don't you think? You can't be christian without self-discipline and sacrifice for God.
Let me also add: the Catholic Church has 2000+ years of wisdom and inspiration from the Holy Spirit. It's up to you if you think you know better! I am humble enough to know that I don't know better than the most clever men of their time who spend their life studying the bible or the great saints who were so close to God .."Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely;" (Proverbs 3:5). The Church (the universal one created by Jesus) has been full of people who spend their entire life studying the scriptures. + We know how the bible was created, not everything was included in it, only the "core" bit but the Tradition is also important to understand the scripture. The Holy Spirit hasn't ceased to act and talk to us through saints. Why do you want to ignore all this wealth and wisdom and just try to rely on your own understanding (which are biased by your ignorance and your sins)? Instead of spending your life trying to find the right discipline and truth to thrive to God, you can just humble yourself and learn from our predecessors. Many protestants have wrong ideas and misunderstanding about the Universal (=Catholic) church.
Thank You for explaining this, as someone from a Protestant background I never understood this (and I’ve actually spoken with a lot of practicing Catholics who seem not to fully grasp it). Something I don’t understand is why on Lenten Friday’s many Catholic Parishes have fish fries which are in many ways feasts, coming from a tradition that is specifically supposed to be about fasting on that day. I understand that it is a wonderful way for Parishes to get together as a community and even something as small as remembering to not eat meat can remind is of Jesus’s sacrifice on that day, it still seems sort of paradoxical to me.

I haven't eaten meat at all in fifty years, and I've been vegan for the last 35 years. So I've been in a quandary about what to give up 8n Fridays, and so decided that for me, the equivalent would be to abstain from tofu and other meat substitutes.

This reminded me of a debate basically from my mother and i talked about the changes from only digging the body to that and having ourselves to be cremated, but still making sure it is left respected to be in the cemetary to rest. I was questioning her to why that changed and i heard it was accepted. It made sense to me. But she said it is not good. That a priest said it shouldnt be that way and the doctrine should stay that way. But i dont think she knows exactly what you mentioned about its different branches basically. And how each of them work. But she stood firm on her beleif. All i was able to tell her was that i notice that everything she hears is never questioned and really studied. But always affirming it as truth. It did bother me a bit to be honest. But this video helped me.
I’ve never heard of this “Don’t eat meat on Fridays” practice. I think it’s interesting. I might incorporate maybe a prolonged fast for Friday? Because I already do intermittent fasting 18:6 and I’m pretty much carnivore, so no meat on Friday would mean basically “don’t eat” for me 😂 I like the idea of Lent but I’m not Catholic so I might just do “fast fridays” instead. Which is great because I consider Saturday the Sabbath anyway which means I could have a breakfast feast on Saturdays. Sorry, that’s a lot of unimportant information, I was brainstorming.

I don't think it works like that. Imagine if you watch that video of a blessing every hour, does that mean you are blessed every time? I believe blessing must be done in person, like confession too. :)
Well on Catholic answers live, every time they have a priest on they ask the priest for his blessing over the listeners. Whether it was a bishop, archbishop, Monsignor, and priest alike. Even fr. Mike was on the show.
Thats not true... on Catholic answers they said that live or not blessins are valid. Dont limit God or blessins to bein live or not. Just like sayin the mass is the real presence when Jesus was crucified on Calvary. That doesn't change whether we are at that time or not. hopefully that made sense.
Thanks Father Mike for enlightening us. We eat monggo beans and fish on those no meat Fridays. Now only Good Friday we can't eat meat. Even though we're allowed now on the rest of Fridays, we Filipinos love our monggo beans. You can hear us saying monggo Friday because we don't meat on that day.
Thanks for clarifying how each of us needs to receive some directives which get offered to us by the Holy See. I believe that the Holy See was the first democracy in the world meant for all lawmakers to uphold. Lawmakers like those who helped establish the Iroquois Great Law of Peace in the year 1142.
It used to & a person is free to continue but it’s not considered a sin to eat meat on Friday. I never knew why but now I do! I feel like Fr. Mike is my catechism teacher:)
Here’s the thing about meat on Fridays….when I ask people what they do for a sacrifice instead of not eating meat they sorta say well, nothing. As a convert these last 30 years, I’ve never once heard a priest talk about what to do besides not eating meat. Sad situation.
Fr Mike what about Canon Law of 1983 para 1250, 1251. As you explained the Local Ordinary has the authority to lay down something else in lieu, he may or may not do so too. It's for any individual to set up his/her own penance but ONLY those listed by the Local Ordinary in his area of jurisdiction. This is what one would call - weaponised ambiguity! This is so prevalent in the Present Church post Vatican II. As you know well about Amoris Latetia and some Bishop's are accepting it & others rejecting it, same goes for admitting non Catholic Christian spouses to Holy Communion. What a mess and for what? To please Man and the World. Are we Catholic or another branch of Protestants? Catholics HAVE LOST THEIR IDENTITY. Sad.
It makes sense, but I have never heard any priest speak about this from the pulpit since the law was changed over 30 years ago. I did not know that an alternate penance was necessary until my wife, who is in Opus Dei, explained it to me. (So I usually did not eat meat even though I thought I could). In fact, I know two very good Catholics who recently told me they never heard of having to substitute another penance in place of eating meat. All this to say it seems the reasons for the change and the necessity for a substitute penance are not well known. Thanks for explaining it......
That is very true. That's the same things in France too. Though I have been a practicing Catholics I have only learned that a few years ago! Now I usually go with the meatless penance. I am pretty sure almost all young Catholics in my country ignore we are supposed to do a sacrifice on Friday (whether it's meat or something else). The Church keep silent on so many things these days...getting the teaching needs a lot of own research because most priests and youth/children groups don't do it anymore..Blessed be the people who teach us!
We should all try to evolve to be vegetarian. Just in general practice. Even if you never get there. Sometimes I eat meat on Friday if I feel I'm starving from eating rice and beans the rest of the week. In Judaism I learned that if you have a health problem you are absolved from fasting.

Tradition understood in the sense of the normative, authentic, and definitive interpretation of biblical teaching (Tradition with a capital “T”) isn’t contradicted by Jesus’ repudiation of the Korban. This was a great explanation. I would like to see an explanation of Paul's teachings compared to Mathew, Mark, Luke and John, as well as other places in the bible, e.g., Jeremia. Paul says that we are saved by righteousness alone while even God said we are saved by righteousness and good works. Paul seems to be saying that good works/deeds aren't necessary. This is a stumbling block for me as I read the epistles.
I completely agree with your reasoning. But non-European Catholics should know that the Catholic Church has a lot of history, 20 centuries of history, and Spanish Catholics we are exempt from the obligation of not eating meat on Fridays that are not Lent, through a papal bull of the XI Century, so the Spaniards could be well fed and fight in the Crusades. Even so, anyone is very free not to eat meat on Fridays or any other day, or make whatever sacrifice they deem necessary.
Ive always had great difficulty understanding this because most in our western society just substitute meat for fish... as if fish isnt meat. As far as i was concerned, it is. I just never understood the mechanisms by with this rule was supposed to work. All i heard was, "dont eat this type of meat on this day and its not a sin." If its tied back to an old culture where feasting included meat, thus the abstinence signified penance, thats wildly different, and for more than one reason. One, meat actually had a significance back then, and two, in other cultures seafoods are what was feasted on. It seems to be that its the spirit of feasting that is to be abstained from, not the parts of the feast.
This is the first time I’ve heard we are supposed to do penance on Fridays. I went to Catholic school until 8th grade about 20 years ago. I’ve gone to church for many years. No one has ever mentioned fish on Fridays or any penance except during lent. Where are the small t teachings and small c customs written?
A few things I have been curious to get a clear answer on regarding this topic, specifically Lent, meat on Fridays, etc. Does the Catholic church consider it to be a sin to not observe Lent? Or penance of some sort on Fridays? And I ask because, from scripture it would seem to me that the Church does not have authority to impose specific days or dietary restrictions upon its members. Specifically: Romans 14:1-7 Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. 2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. 3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. 4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. 5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. 6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. 7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. So my question is, does it even matter whether one observes days (Friday, Lent) or diets (no meat, other)? Is that really going against the church?
How does one truly know that today's translations are the original teachings from Jesus, in our current language today, I'm curious because I'm on the path of converting to catholicism. And have many questions.

Thank you for this video. I'm a protestant and I wonder what you think of these binding "lower-case t" traditions in relation to Mark 7:1-13. The Pharisees had a binding tradition known as the Mishnah that they sought to impose on Jesus' disciples. However, Jesus rejected this authority and rebuked them for making their traditions equal to God's Words. Do you believe the Catholic Church does (has done) this by binding people with these man-made rules such as not eating meat on fridays, etc. etc. etc.?
Hi Father Mike, what about the Wednesday fast? When and why did the Catholic Church abondon this practice? The Orthodox have kept this practice since the times the Didache was written.
hoopoe bird correct me if I'm wrong, but Christ was a Jew until his father came down to him and told him who he truly was, obviously he couldn't and did not pray to himself and was not a Christian. He is not a Christian because he is Christianity itself, he is the basis of it. Once again I'm not sure just making an educated guess.
There are a lot of passages where he claims exactly the opposite of what you ssay: the Trasfiguration for examples, or when asking Peter who do he thinks He is. Also he healed non-Jews and admitted that he was sent FIRST for the israelites but did not refuse to help others. The exact meaning of the parable of the wedding feast is an answer to all your objections regarding not preaching to Gentiles.
And yet there are thousands of people in Church that devote their lives to studying the Bible and find it fascinating times and times again. But for you it takes just one person, who studied it on his own and decided that it's corrupted and false? That's like... very scientific approach.

Then the Catholic Church is also expert in humanity so the Church advices some disciple to help us. As Father Mike explained this is not the doctrine, this is just a practice that help people to live united to God in their daily life. Doing something without knowing why you do so, is indeed acting as Pharisees. But we know why we do penance, why we keep moral truth (chastety, modesty), etc. The act is only demonstrating what the heart wants to express - and the act helps the heart to feel that way.
I don't eat meat on Fridays during lent. That being said, my understand is not eating meat, because it's expensive or what your choose to give up. You take that money that you would have spent on meat, or whatever you gave up, and you give to a charity or the less fortunate. That's just my understanding. I'm not sure if that's why people do it all the time. Just how I took it from what I was told
I do not eat meat especially pork and beef on Friday because on Fridays at work they serve beef hamburger for lunch and bacon and sausage for breakfast. I abstain from it because I want it so bad and I know I should abstain.
Hi Father, how do I further explain Tradition to my nondenominational friends, they are confused because Jesus said he does not go by tradition especially with the Pharisees. I explained it as the Pharisees did not act on love first, and that is what Jesus did not like their tradition. I gave the example of the good Samaritan where tradition can blind people, but those who place love first are doing the will of God. Yet they are confused when it comes to the Tradition of the Catholic church because they correspond it to the Pharisees... What do I say?
I'm assuming you are talking about Matthew 15:1-20. Jesus' desciples were breaking tradition not washing their hands before their meals. Jesus then points out that the pharisees were sinning against God for breaking God's commandments for the sake of their traditions. Jesus was calling the pharisees hyporcrites because they cared more of little things such as how people would judge them instead of caring more if they were obeying God's commandments. 2 Thessalonians 15: So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter. St. Paul reassures his readers to stay true to tradition and scriptures. No where in scripture does the bible say to stand firm only in scriptures (sola scriptura).
@@EmilyStPaul Jesus in Mark 7:7 said they were worshiping God in vain because they were making their traditions equal to the very words of God. I am a protestant and I am wrestling through this to learn what the Catholic response to this is, since Jesus indeed rejected their authority to add to Scripture. It seems to me that the Catholic Church is adding to Scripture, just like the Pharisees were. Would love to hear some Catholic feedback!

I just re-read Mark 7 right now. Something I have recently been praying with is something a Friar said.. "We are the potential Pharisees." But what is beautiful, is that we are also the potential Apostles of Christ. I posted this question 2 years ago, and everytime I bring this struggle to the Lord, He reveals more and more this question: "Is your heart with me? Or is it far from me." He also reminds me of Peter, that it is okay to fail, but to run to his mercy and repent. The pharisee's hearts were far from God and were far from repenting. It's a wrestling passage because it is so easy to go through the motions of following Christ and being in a level of comfort. We have to have a heart that is willing to listen and act on the command of God which is love, something i'm continually working on. One thing to consider, is that Jesus was also a man of tradition. He wen't to the Jewish temple, celebrated the passover, honored his mother and father etc. Jesus did not think that tradition is bad, but longed so much for our hearts to be united to his. Jewish Tradition therefore, was transformed into the new tradition of the Church after Christ resurrected. the Mass is actually based off of a lot of Jewish tradition! As Catholics, we do not believe in adding to scripture, like you we also believe it's heretical. I can see how the transformation of tradition may seem like it is adding, but it is actually fulfilling of the law, just as Christ fulfilled the Old Testament. Tradition is meant to aid our relationship with Christ, and with others, especially the Tradition of Mass. If our heart is centered on love and the will of God, one can see Tradition in a beautiful lens and brings you closer to God. The cool thing is that all Catholic tradition is backed and supported by scripture, even though to the naked eye it may seem otherwise. If you have questions to why the Church does something or believes something, I suggest reading the catechism, and early Church Fathers writings!
As I am reclaiming my catholic faith and heritage, I was looking to learn why not to eat meat on fridays. If I want to try and live my life as a reflection of Christs’, I will simply fast on fridays. Fasting keeps me clear minded. This state of mind helps me focus on hard work and get more done. Something akin to bearing my cross weirdly gets easier when fasting. So for now on, fridays will be fasting days. Thank you Father 😊

First of all, Protestantism didn’t even exist until the 1500’s when (edit: Martin Luther) nailed his 95 Thesis to the door of the church. The Catholic church is AGAINST worshiping Mary or any other saints and claims them that do to be heretics. Worship belongs to Christ alone. Jesus is depicted FREQUENTLY in Catholic art and stories as an adult and this argument is jut asinine, especially considering that Catholics take the Eucharist/communion every Mass in front of a crucifix and recite the Lord’s Prayer… all of which are focusing on events that happened when Jesus was an ADULT. Many within the Church HAVE apologized for things like the Inquisition. On March 12, 2000, Pope John Paul II publicly apologized for that and many similar sins done by the Church. While they did refuse to translate Scripture from Latin, they reversed their position on this not long after the Protestant Reformation began at the Council of Trent and other councils. And realistically, most in the Middle Ages couldn’t read anyway in their own language.
You don’t have to be Catholic, but when you refuse to educate yourself on these things and spout off nonsense like this it shows your resistance to Catholicism isn’t based in anything but lies handed down from others to you. It shows you never bothered to look into these things and actually find out what the Catholic church actually teaches.

Fr. Mike can you please do a video on speaking in tongues? My mother is Protestant and I know what her church teaches but I need to know what the Catholic Church teaches.
Well, I'm by no means an expert, but as I understand it the Catholic Church doesn't have a lot of OFFICIAL teachings on tongues (I'm talking about things that have been infallibly declared), but there are Bible passages that talk about speaking in tongues that are helpful: see 1 Corinthians 12-14. Remember than in all spiritual gifts, the goal is love. In general, I think the Church thinks that using the gifts of the Holy Spirit is a good thing; I'm pretty sure Pope Francis himself is a Charismatic.
Also, look up the Catholic Charismatic Renewal; it is generally associated with Catholics who pray in tongues (as well as those who use the other Charismatic gifts).
Speaking in tongues is considered a charism, or a gift. The Catholic Church isn't against speaking in tongues it just recommends caution.
I was ina charismatic grouo and now i know why it is cationed. Those gifts have been used to seperate. But luckily, i was able to see that before it was too late for me. I was going down the same route. If not worse. Its best to charise the gifts, for love. Most importantly for God alone at times. And if God permits, it will come out in the right place and the right time. But by the gift of the spirit.
Speaking in tongues is a gift. The other side of the gift is that someone has to understand what is being said. If a person just mutters garble, then it is not speaking in tongues. Rather, it may be hypocritical. God gives this gift to reach out to his people. Pentecost was a day where the Apostles taught, but the listeners heard the message clearly in their native tongues. So the question is: "When you speak in tongues, who receives the message and who understands it." Peace be with you.

I grew up a Catholic but I was never really taught about these things. Im currently in the process of working on my faith because I cannot allow myself to just be a mediocre Catholic. I have no excuse. Im blessed to grow up Catholic but the onus is on me to constantly work on being holy.

The bishops in England and Wales have told us to stop eating meat on Fridays again. Growing up in the 60s I loved Fridays because I prefer fish to meat. My mother also cooked meatless meals with cheese or eggs on Fridays too which I loved. I have never understood the no meat on Friday rule/discipline. Thank you for your interesting explanations Father.

Im not catholic. Im christian. Im always confused with how catholics practice their faith. For christians, if its not in the bible then we dont worry about it. For example, "dont eat meat on friday" is not in the bible so we say theres no point in not eating meat on friday. BUT, this video actually helped me understand quite a bit. I think we christians and catholics can agree on how important it is to have a close relationship with God. Theres that old saying of "youd understand me better if you walked a mile in my shoes." Well if i understood this video correctly, not eating meat on friday is sorta like that. How can we have a close as possible relationship with God if we never walk a mile in his shoes, figuratively, of course. So choosing something that makes us "suffer" on friday the way Jesus suffered on Friday is a way for us to put ourselves in his shoes and become closer with him. I love it. As i said, im not Catholic, dont think i ever will be. As far as i can see, both christians and catholics believe in the same God and in the same bible so im not sure the titles really matter. But Father mike your videos are definitley giving me a better understanding of why catholics do the things they do, and your videos are helping me grow stronger in my own faith. Thank you 🙏

How many people actually "do" a penance in lieu of eating meat? It is still recommended as a practice by the USCCB. I love having Fridays as a penitential day but I wonder how many practicing Catholics are actually aware of this.

Father, the discipline of the Church never "changed" about fasting of meet on fridays. But, as you said, it can be switched by something else, but in a situation that it's not possible to fast of meat. Although, that was not very clear on your video that the discipline is the same(do not eat meat on fridays). We can even become a source of inspiration to others( to lead them to Christ , of course)if for example your friends invite you for a barbecue or a pizza with sausage on friday, and you say that you don't eat meat on that day as a sacrifice for Christ. At least, that would make them give it a thought. Besides that, thank you always for the videos you make. They are a great source for us in our faith. There is nothing wrong with using it as an example to start curiosity about our faith. But if they ever do ask for explanation, include the other way that it can be disciplined. The rest will be up to them and only should be up to them and God alone after that. God is simple sometimes too.
Before the 60s and Vatican II, every Friday of the year was a day of fast and abstinence. Lent was nothing from a warm blooded animal all of the 40 days. After Vatican II, only the regular Fridays of Lent were days of abstinence. Only Ash Wednesday and Good Friday were of fast and abstinence. The reason for the relaxation was "the constitution of Man was weakened by two World Wars in the first half of the century".

Jesus says that people will fast once the spouse (Him) will be taken away. Doing something every Friday to honor His sacrifice is in no way criticizable - whether you are catholic or not. All Christian thrive to honour God.
Doing a sacrifice to get united to Jesus's suffering will help you in your spiritual life. Remembering the "crazy" things that God has made for us (Incarnation, Passion, etc.) will only increase your love for God. We have crucified Jesus with our sins..maybe fasting from meat (or something else) on Friday is not such a big thing, don't you think? You can't be christian without self-discipline and sacrifice for God.
Let me also add: the Catholic Church has 2000+ years of wisdom and inspiration from the Holy Spirit. It's up to you if you think you know better! I am humble enough to know that I don't know better than the most clever men of their time who spend their life studying the bible or the great saints who were so close to God .."Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely;" (Proverbs 3:5).
The Church (the universal one created by Jesus) has been full of people who spend their entire life studying the scriptures. + We know how the bible was created, not everything was included in it, only the "core" bit but the Tradition is also important to understand the scripture. The Holy Spirit hasn't ceased to act and talk to us through saints. Why do you want to ignore all this wealth and wisdom and just try to rely on your own understanding (which are biased by your ignorance and your sins)? Instead of spending your life trying to find the right discipline and truth to thrive to God, you can just humble yourself and learn from our predecessors.
Many protestants have wrong ideas and misunderstanding about the Universal (=Catholic) church.
Thank You for explaining this, as someone from a Protestant background I never understood this (and I’ve actually spoken with a lot of practicing Catholics who seem not to fully grasp it). Something I don’t understand is why on Lenten Friday’s many Catholic Parishes have fish fries which are in many ways feasts, coming from a tradition that is specifically supposed to be about fasting on that day. I understand that it is a wonderful way for Parishes to get together as a community and even something as small as remembering to not eat meat can remind is of Jesus’s sacrifice on that day, it still seems sort of paradoxical to me.

I haven't eaten meat at all in fifty years, and I've been vegan for the last 35 years. So I've been in a quandary about what to give up 8n Fridays, and so decided that for me, the equivalent would be to abstain from tofu and other meat substitutes.
Never knew wat not eating meat on Friday really was about. I know my grandma still held this tradition in the 00,s, thanks for clarifying.

This reminded me of a debate basically from my mother and i talked about the changes from only digging the body to that and having ourselves to be cremated, but still making sure it is left respected to be in the cemetary to rest. I was questioning her to why that changed and i heard it was accepted. It made sense to me. But she said it is not good. That a priest said it shouldnt be that way and the doctrine should stay that way. But i dont think she knows exactly what you mentioned about its different branches basically. And how each of them work. But she stood firm on her beleif. All i was able to tell her was that i notice that everything she hears is never questioned and really studied. But always affirming it as truth. It did bother me a bit to be honest. But this video helped me.

I’ve never heard of this “Don’t eat meat on Fridays” practice. I think it’s interesting. I might incorporate maybe a prolonged fast for Friday? Because I already do intermittent fasting 18:6 and I’m pretty much carnivore, so no meat on Friday would mean basically “don’t eat” for me 😂 I like the idea of Lent but I’m not Catholic so I might just do “fast fridays” instead. Which is great because I consider Saturday the Sabbath anyway which means I could have a breakfast feast on Saturdays.

Well on Catholic answers live, every time they have a priest on they ask the priest for his blessing over the listeners. Whether it was a bishop, archbishop, Monsignor, and priest alike.

Thats not true... on Catholic answers they said that live or not blessins are valid. Dont limit God or blessins to bein live or not. Just like sayin the mass is the real presence when Jesus was crucified on Calvary. That doesn't change whether we are at that time or not. hopefully that made sense.

Here’s the thing about meat on Fridays….when I ask people what they do for a sacrifice instead of not eating meat they sorta say well, nothing. As a convert these last 30 years, I’ve never once heard a priest talk about what to do besides not eating meat. Sad situation.

Fr Mike what about Canon Law of 1983 para 1250, 1251. As you explained the Local Ordinary has the authority to lay down something else in lieu, he may or may not do so too. It's for any individual to set up his/her own penance but ONLY those listed by the Local Ordinary in his area of jurisdiction. This is what one would call - weaponised ambiguity! This is so prevalent in the Present Church post Vatican II.
As you know well about Amoris Latetia and some Bishop's are accepting it & others rejecting it, same goes for admitting non Catholic Christian spouses to Holy Communion. What a mess and for what? To please Man and the World. Are we Catholic or another branch of Protestants? Catholics HAVE LOST THEIR IDENTITY. Sad.
It makes sense, but I have never heard any priest speak about this from the pulpit since the law was changed over 30 years ago. I did not know that an alternate penance was necessary until my wife, who is in Opus Dei, explained it to me. (So I usually did not eat meat even though I thought I could). In fact, I know two very good Catholics who recently told me they never heard of having to substitute another penance in place of eating meat. All this to say it seems the reasons for the change and the necessity for a substitute penance are not well known. Thanks for explaining it......
That is very true. That's the same things in France too. Though I have been a practicing Catholics I have only learned that a few years ago! Now I usually go with the meatless penance.
I am pretty sure almost all young Catholics in my country ignore we are supposed to do a sacrifice on Friday (whether it's meat or something else). The Church keep silent on so many things these days...getting the teaching needs a lot of own research because most priests and youth/children groups don't do it anymore..Blessed be the people who teach us!

We should all try to evolve to be vegetarian. Just in general practice. Even if you never get there. Sometimes I eat meat on Friday if I feel I'm starving from eating rice and beans the rest of the week. In Judaism I learned that if you have a health problem you are absolved from fasting.
I don't actually think Paul VI removed abstinence on Fridays; he said you CAN with DISPENSE from parish priest interchange with something else to be specified. But the norm stays abstinence from meat on fridays

Tradition understood in the sense of the normative, authentic, and definitive interpretation of biblical teaching (Tradition with a capital “T”) isn’t contradicted by Jesus’ repudiation of the Korban. How does the development of doctrine and having more theology translate to having greater clarity of God's word?

So God's message was incomplete and needed Men to develope the doctrine for him? That raises the question who or what is God? and how many mistakes has he made if the former inference was true

This was a great explanation. I would like to see an explanation of Paul's teachings compared to Mathew, Mark, Luke and John, as well as other places in the bible, e.g., Jeremia. Paul says that we are saved by righteousness alone while even God said we are saved by righteousness and good works. Paul seems to be saying that good works/deeds aren't necessary. This is a stumbling block for me as I read the epistles.

I completely agree with your reasoning. But non-European Catholics should know that the Catholic Church has a lot of history, 20 centuries of history, and Spanish Catholics we are exempt from the obligation of not eating meat on Fridays that are not Lent, through a papal bull of the XI Century, so the Spaniards could be well fed and fight in the Crusades. Even so, anyone is very free not to eat meat on Fridays or any other day, or make whatever sacrifice they deem necessary.
Ive always had great difficulty understanding this because most in our western society just substitute meat for fish... as if fish isnt meat. As far as i was concerned, it is. I just never understood the mechanisms by with this rule was supposed to work.
All i heard was, "dont eat this type of meat on this day and its not a sin."
If its tied back to an old culture where feasting included meat, thus the abstinence signified penance, thats wildly different, and for more than one reason.
One, meat actually had a significance back then, and two, in other cultures seafoods are what was feasted on. It seems to be that its the spirit of feasting that is to be abstained from, not the parts of the feast.
This is the first time I’ve heard we are supposed to do penance on Fridays. I went to Catholic school until 8th grade about 20 years ago. I’ve gone to church for many years. No one has ever mentioned fish on Fridays or any penance except during lent. Where are the small t teachings and small c customs written?
A few things I have been curious to get a clear answer on regarding this topic, specifically Lent, meat on Fridays, etc.
Does the Catholic church consider it to be a sin to not observe Lent? Or penance of some sort on Fridays?
And I ask because, from scripture it would seem to me that the Church does not have authority to impose specific days or dietary restrictions upon its members. Specifically:
Romans 14:1-7
Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations.
2 For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs.
3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him.
4 Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.
5 One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
6 He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks.

So my question is, does it even matter whether one observes days (Friday, Lent) or diets (no meat, other)? Is that really going against the church?
How does one truly know that today's translations are the original teachings from Jesus, in our current language today, I'm curious because I'm on the path of converting to catholicism. And have many questions.

Thank you for this video. I'm a protestant and I wonder what you think of these binding "lower-case t" traditions in relation to Mark 7:1-13. The Pharisees had a binding tradition known as the Mishnah that they sought to impose on Jesus' disciples. However, Jesus rejected this authority and rebuked them for making their traditions equal to God's Words. Do you believe the Catholic Church does (has done) this by binding people with these man-made rules such as not eating meat on fridays, etc. etc. etc.?
afaik, Jesus was against doing things by the letter of the law, without love.

hoopoe bird correct me if I'm wrong, but Christ was a Jew until his father came down to him and told him who he truly was, obviously he couldn't and did not pray to himself and was not a Christian. He is not a Christian because he is Christianity itself, he is the basis of it. Once again I'm not sure just making an educated guess.
There are a lot of passages where he claims exactly the opposite of what you ssay: the Trasfiguration for examples, or when asking Peter who do he thinks He is. Also he healed non-Jews and admitted that he was sent FIRST for the israelites but did not refuse to help others. The exact meaning of the parable of the wedding feast is an answer to all your objections regarding not preaching to Gentiles.
And yet there are thousands of people in Church that devote their lives to studying the Bible and find it fascinating times and times again. But for you it takes just one person, who studied it on his own and decided that it's corrupted and false? That's like... very scientific approach.

Where is penance in Christian teaching , not eating fish on Fridays reminds me more of the extra rules of the Pharisees.
fasting and sacrifice is part of the Christian teaching...Doing something every Friday to honor His sacrifice can't be bad. All Christian thrive to honour God, isn't it? Doing a sacrifice to get united to Jesus's suffering on that day will help you in your spiritual life. Remembering regularly the "crazy" things that God has made for us (Incarnation, Passion, etc.) will only increase your love for God. We have crucified Jesus with our sins..maybe fasting from meat (or something else) on Friday is not such a big thing to do penance and show our repentance, don't you think? Then the Catholic Church is also expert in humanity so the Church advices some disciple to help us. As Father Mike explained this is not the doctrine, this is just a practice that help people to live united to God in their daily life.
Doing something without knowing why you do so, is indeed acting as Pharisees. But we know why we do penance, why we keep moral truth (chastety, modesty), etc. The act is only demonstrating what the heart wants to express - and the act helps the heart to feel that way.

I don't eat meat on Fridays during lent. That being said, my understand is not eating meat, because it's expensive or what your choose to give up. You take that money that you would have spent on meat, or whatever you gave up, and you give to a charity or the less fortunate. That's just my understanding. I'm not sure if that's why people do it all the time. Just how I took it from what I was told
I do not eat meat especially pork and beef on Friday because on Fridays at work they serve beef hamburger for lunch and bacon and sausage for breakfast. I abstain from it because I want it so bad and I know I should abstain.
Hi Father, how do I further explain Tradition to my nondenominational friends, they are confused because Jesus said he does not go by tradition especially with the Pharisees. I explained it as the Pharisees did not act on love first, and that is what Jesus did not like their tradition. I gave the example of the good Samaritan where tradition can blind people, but those who place love first are doing the will of God. Yet they are confused when it comes to the Tradition of the Catholic church because they correspond it to the Pharisees... What do I say?
I'm assuming you are talking about Matthew 15:1-20. Jesus' desciples were breaking tradition not washing their hands before their meals. Jesus then points out that the pharisees were sinning against God for breaking God's commandments for the sake of their traditions.
Jesus was calling the pharisees hyporcrites because they cared more of little things such as how people would judge them instead of caring more if they were obeying God's commandments.
2 Thessalonians 15: So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.
St. Paul reassures his readers to stay true to tradition and scriptures. No where in scripture does the bible say to stand firm only in scriptures (sola scriptura).

@@EmilyStPaul Jesus in Mark 7:7 said they were worshiping God in vain because they were making their traditions equal to the very words of God. I am a protestant and I am wrestling through this to learn what the Catholic response to this is, since Jesus indeed rejected their authority to add to Scripture. It seems to me that the Catholic Church is adding to Scripture, just like the Pharisees were. Would love to hear some Catholic feedback!

I just re-read Mark 7 right now. Something I have recently been praying with is something a Friar said.. "We are the potential Pharisees." But what is beautiful, is that we are also the potential Apostles of Christ. I posted this question 2 years ago, and everytime I bring this struggle to the Lord, He reveals more and more this question: "Is your heart with me? Or is it far from me." He also reminds me of Peter, that it is okay to fail, but to run to his mercy and repent. The pharisee's hearts were far from God and were far from repenting. It's a wrestling passage because it is so easy to go through the motions of following Christ and being in a level of comfort. We have to have a heart that is willing to listen and act on the command of God which is love, something i'm continually working on.
One thing to consider, is that Jesus was also a man of tradition. He wen't to the Jewish temple, celebrated the passover, honored his mother and father etc. Jesus did not think that tradition is bad, but longed so much for our hearts to be united to his. Jewish Tradition therefore, was transformed into the new tradition of the Church after Christ resurrected. the Mass is actually based off of a lot of Jewish tradition! As Catholics, we do not believe in adding to scripture, like you we also believe it's heretical. I can see how the transformation of tradition may seem like it is adding, but it is actually fulfilling of the law, just as Christ fulfilled the Old Testament. Tradition is meant to aid our relationship with Christ, and with others, especially the Tradition of Mass. If our heart is centered on love and the will of God, one can see Tradition in a beautiful lens and brings you closer to God. The cool thing is that all Catholic tradition is backed and supported by scripture, even though to the naked eye it may seem otherwise. If you have questions to why the Church does something or believes something, I suggest reading the catechism, and early Church Fathers writings!
