  • One of the most common Bible verses people use to try and debunk Catholic teaching is Matthew 23:9, where Jesus says, “Call no man on earth father.” In this video, Fr. Mike Schmitz guides us through the New Testament to give us the context and significance of this teaching. By the end of this video, you will see that Christ’s words here have much deeper meaning than what many people would believe.
    Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:

    Father, I hope you know that regardless of what some would say to go against the Church, there are many of us who call you and all other priests Father - not because that's what you are supposed to be called, but because we mean it. It's wonderful to have you constantly bring Christ into our lives through your yes to the priesthood, your teachings and the sacraments. And while you priests don't need much from us, we desperately need you. So thank you Father for all you've done for so many years now. Know that you are in my humble prayers. May God protect you, and keep blessing us with holy priests.

      Ka Mi actually priests need us more than you think. They need our prayers just as much as we need theirs. Even though priest are usually living generally a better life than others (in spiritual wise), just one zip for the cup of sin is enough to make them crumble. I know many good priest that have lost their ways. The only thing we can do is for to pray for them so they find their way back or to always guide them.
      Anyway please don't take it the wrong way. You may have known these facts. I just posted this so that it could help some to understand that our prayers do matter and that we are not helpless. Thank you. And God Bless.

      Perhaps mike give less opinion and more Scripture? ONE. The Lord was not talking about earthly fathers. To add that to the discussion proves nothing. SECOND....Jesus meant what He said and said what He meant. The fact that mike covets the title AND refers to the pope as holy father is why the Lord placed a clear prohibition on using the title. Nowhere in Scripture do you find the term father OR holy father used to describe a leader in the Christian church....nowhere. However you do find it in our Lords prayer in John 17:11...'' And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. HOLY FATHER keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are''. For a man, pope or priest to take that name is disgusting.

      WARNING The meaning of being a Christian preach to the world correct? what is your comment? Pope Francis said Dec 24th 2019. Christians should not try to spread the word of God. Not to try and convert others of other faiths. Mark 16:15,He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Matthew 24:14: ―And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. Acts 20:24, However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me-the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.Matthew 5:15;16, Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.Matthew 28:19-20 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. Psalm 105:1 Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Mark 8:35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it. So This is the leader of the church of God. We are to fish for men. • @austinfewer7016
      @austinfewer7016 6 лет назад +1

      Matthew terry, even though all Christian denominations believe in Christ as there saviour it doesn't make them right. Every Christian denomination can trace its roots back to the Catholic Church and this is the church that Christ founded, with all of its liturgy and sacraments. When someone turns away from that church and rejects the church's authority you are going against gods will. All these different denominations take away sacraments and have false teachings, though they do speak some truth but that truth came from the Catholic Church . Jesus only made one church whom he built on Peter (the first pope) and there is no salvation outside his church. Check out fr mikes video "why be catholic instead of just Christian ". For further knowledge, God Bless.

    • @matthewterry9413
      @matthewterry9413 6 лет назад +1

      Austin Fewer yea that’s false. All mainline denominations are valid. The doctrines that denominations differ on do not even really matter as they are not salvific. Only salvific doctrines affect someone’s salvation, naturally, and all mainline denominations are in agreement on the important and salvific doctrines. That’s what makes them an official denomination and not cults, like jehova witness for example. Jehova witnesses do not believe in the core doctrines.

    • @matthewterry9413
      @matthewterry9413 6 лет назад +4

      Austin Fewer also, Jesus did not start the catholic denomination, the catholic denomination evolved into what it is over time. Jesus simply started the church by commissioning the apostles to go into all the world baptizing, then he ascended into heaven before they did any of that. Jesus was not even there to hold the first church service. nor was peter the first pope. peter wasn’t even the leader of the church. James was the leader of the Jerusalem church, and Paul started more of the church than peter did. There was no one leader at all, as we can see from the book of acts, we see the Jerusalem council, not a pope. Peter’s voice was not even he most prominent voice in that council, Paul’s, James, and others were. Nothing you said can be found in scripture, only mere catholic tradition. The best part is though, is that it doesn’t even matter. I’m not calling you a false Christian for the trivial things that we differ on, because none of it is salvific

    • @austinfewer7016

      No brother please try to understand, I know you love Christ just as I do, as our lord and saviour , but the idea of you saying that the Roman Catholic Church is not the true original church is wrong. This is an historic fact ask any pastor or minister and he will tell you the same thing, unless he/she lies about it. All Protestant denominations were founded by man, the Catholic Church was founded by Jesus . It started with Martin Luther who was a catholic priest but decided he did not like the teachings, plus he tried to change the New Testament by taking out books such as revelation but was not allowed to, so he took out seven books of Old Testament scripture instead. Peter was the first pope this is also a historic fact in the church . When Jesus said "you are Peter and UPON this rock I will build my church" he meant that jesus was going to lead the church. The sacraments of the church are necessary for salvation such as confession which the apostles did practise says so in scripture. Just to say one final thing is that Protestants deny that Mary is our mother even though Jesus himself gave his mother to us as our mother as well. If you deny this, we'll that offends God. I suggest you do some research and really try in your heart to see the truth of the church and research apparitions of Mary through history. Our mother Mary loves us and only wants salvation of souls for her son Jesus.

    I am Pentecostal but we still show respect to a priest and call him Father. Its not easy being in the clergy and our mother taught us that if a nun is a mother superior you call her reverend mother in respect of her title because she earned it and also is constantly praying for others. Its sad that most Protestants dont realize that their roots is from the Catholic Church.

      I remember my Southern Baptist neighbors showing respect for the nuns from the convent in the neighborhood when they walked downtown to do their shopping, praying the Rosary. The youngest daughter was my best friend, so I went shopping with them every Saturday. Her mom taught us that the prayers of the righteous are powerful, and nuns have devoted their lives to God, calling themselves "Bride of Christ" because they love Jesus so much. She knew I was Catholic, but that's not the reason she taught her children to show reverence for people of prayer. Some of other neighbors were anti-Catholic, and beat me up, saying I wasn't Christian. My best friend's parents wouldn't let their kids play with those neighbors after that. Her mom said, "They might be Christian, but they don't act like it." It taught me Christian charity, and I'm so grateful to God for putting them in my life, because I might have been anti-Protestant if it weren't for them...and being prejudiced would have put my soul in grave danger.

      7. Why does it teach that baptism is immersion instead of pouring? (Col. 2:12).
      8. Why does it forbid us to address religious leaders as "father"? (Matt. 23:9).
      9. Why does it teach that Christ is the only foundation and not the apostle Peter? (1 Cor. 3:11).
      10. Why does it teach that there is one mediator instead of many? (1 Tim. 2:5).
      11. Why does it teach that a bishop must be a married man? (1 Tim. 3:2, 4-5).
      12. Why is it opposed to the primacy of Peter? (Luke 22:24-27).
      13. Why does it oppose the idea of purgatory? (Luke 16:26).
      14. Why is it completely silent about infant baptism, instrumental music in worship, indulgences, confession to priests, the rosary, the mass, and many other things in the Catholic Church?
      Leave the traditional of religions out of it follow Jess Christ.
      It’s truly sad to watch this. Satan is the greatest deceiver and since the fall of Adam and Eve he’s waged war and is the prince of the power of the air. Through his deception he has rooted himself in many religions. He is victorious when he stops a person from truly being saved. Accepting the free gift of Salvation from Jesus Christ; that he died on the cross for our sins and that we repent of our sins, knowing that he is God and that he rose on the third day is the only way to the Father and eternal life. Corinthians 15:3-4 “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” Only then will your sins be forgiven by Grace alone, counting only on works will not save your souls and Satan is counting on this so that you can truly NOT be saved. Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by GRACE you have been saved through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.” Peters gospel was clearly for the Jews! Paul’s is for the Gentiles. Mans evilness has created “The Holy Mother Church” and through its own created traditions it has made a system for a person to truly not know how to be saved. You know what it is that the Catholic Church calls a MAN Holy Father!!! Excuse me but there is only one Holy Father and he is God the Father. You don’t need a Church that creates its own traditions nor do you need a man to be present for you to have a personal direct relationship with Christ. I KNOW that I am saved and that I have eternal life through Jesus. By Grace I have been forgiven of all my sins, past present and future. Ask any Roman Catholic if they KNOW with 100% certainty that they are truly saved and that they will be raptured. This is to anyone, Mormon, Jehovas Witness or any other religion that doesn’t preach the Gospel of Salvation through Grace alone. You can know in your heart you won’t ever doubt when you are truly saved through Accepting the free gift that Jesus Christ has given. For your souls sake don’t be fooled by Satan.

      Jesus is speaking to religious hypocrites when he is saying call no man on earth father because they were calling men that were not their fathers by this title as if those men were higher than them or holy or better than them.
      A father is a man who gave seed to a woman which together they concieved a child.
      This male you call father is no ones father has no children or wife because he has chosen not to.
      So I am intrigued to know why do you call this male figure "father"?

    Excellent explanation of this Protestant misunderstanding--one I had before becoming Catholic. It makes sense due to the family nature of the Church and Paul's words of spiritual fatherhood. Today on the Feast of St. Peter we read of Peter's exhortation to "Elders" (Presbyters or Priests) to be willing shepherds and "overseers" (Bishops) not in a lording way but humble and in a serving way. Peter clearly got what Jesus was saying when Jesus was warning against going after titles of authority instead of genuine service. I am grateful for all those who serve as spiritual fathers in the Church--I have met a number of amazing men who have molded what Jesus and Peter said they should be--humble servants and fathers who care for the family and flock of God. Nice jobFr. Mike!

      @@badmedicine1339 If you don't believe in the sacrifice of the Eucharist, the sign of the new convenant (even here and now, the Lamb of God still being offered as a sacrifice on the cross and still being resurrected to atone for mankind's sins from Adam and Eve to the last man and woman who will ever be born) then yes, you don't need priests. However, Christianity is rooted in Judaism and the old covenant. The Apostles and the first disciples were Jews and so when the first Christians worshipped God, they did it in the way they knew how. With priest wearing priestly robes, an altar, candles, incense and the bread. The priests led the prayers, taught the Word of God and performed the sacrifice as they still do today. The Apostles laid their hands on their successors to officialize that they were appointing them in their stead. This is done today so every priest can trace his "priestly lineage" back to one of the Twelve and back to Jesus himself. This is the authority Catholics recognise when they call a priest "father". Thus he's an earthly father for the family of Christians on earth, instructing and leading them to the love of God through Jesus and the sacraments, preparing them for eternal life with God. Just like any father brings up his children with care and love to live their future life fully as an adult. This is why there are priests in the Church and why it makes the scandals we see today so horrendous. Sorry this is so long-winded but the fullness of the Catholic Church can't always be put into a nutshell! I hope this helps. God bless.

    I mean clearly the "context" is "what should the early church leaders call themselves" and Jesus clearly crosses 3 titles off the list.
    The reasoning of Jesus Christ is particularly relevant- because "Father" capital "F" is a term for God! And this is exactly the reasons catholics insist on being called "Father" its so they can claim divine authority to perform stuff like the Eucharist.
    I do not condemn or accuse my catholic brothers in Christ who call men "Father", but me personally I would no sooner call a man "Holy Father" than I would call him "Holy God" it is simply blasphemy to me.
    When I sit before the Lord God Most High and beg my Father for mercy and call on my "Father" it is in reference to ONE Person. And it isn't a priest I can assure you of that! God bless

    I practice in the Lutheran tradition, but I follow your video series and use it to defend the Catholic Church to our critics. Thanks Fr. Mike, loving this channel...
    I had always believed "Call no man Father (capital F)" meant call no man a god (lower case g... there is only one God) as Jesus himself called Abraham... Father Abraham and Abraham was a man... and I know that it was a parable but what about the Prodigal Son? And there is also the genealogies of Jesus all the way back to Adam... and that's just the New Testament

As now people are also seeking for explanation rather than just "have faith". And many Protestant church provide this gap, that's why many Catholic people converting, we also can see that in Brazil where Catholic people are declining and Evangelism rising. But i know that Catholic is great, because we use the complete-Bible and interpretate it not only of what is written but also from a lot of aspects. So, i really wish that Catholic Church change a bit and provide what people nowadays need. GOD bless you Fr Mike and team for making this great channel!!

Even a person with an IQ lower than plant life knows and understands that when the Lord says call NO MAN Father but your Heavenly Father theres no complicated context to this buy if you listen to this guy he still INSISTS on YOU CALLING HIM FATHER.

    I call the priest father as respect since he leads during the mass.But it doesnt mean that I worship him or comparing him to Jesus.We all know know whos the real Father is.After the mass I dont even think of him but rather I think of the message he shares to us and what to do about it.I often pray to Jesus and think of Him whenever I pray.You know sometimes its just common sense to understand.And when youre here in my country sometimes we address old people we dont know on the street "father" if we ask something to them.

      Be like what? Elijah? Cause Elijah even mocked the Prophets of Baal in 1 Kings 18:25-27 “And Elijah said unto the prophets of Baal, Choose you one bullock for yourselves, and dress it first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, but put no fire under. And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dressed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, saying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that answered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked.”

    I may be wrong, but the way I interpreted this saying of Jesus was him basically saying not to hero-worship any man, and to only look up to God. Young men in particular can look up to men they aspire to be in a somewhat worshipping sense - which can lead them to some undesirable influences as men are men. Look up only to Christ and you will be a better man overall.

    He did not say to do away with the word father. We have a father and we have teachers. He said call no man father. Don't refer to fellow disciples with titles. Can you people see the distinction or are blind? Titles separate and elevate one believer above another. Read the Bible in context. Come on think about what Jesus was saying. It's a sin to call someone Father because we are brothers (equals) and we have one father in heaven. Can you see what Jesus is getting at. Catholics have trouble receiving this because they see their parish priest as a different and above. We are all to be disciples.

      That's an heretic argument. We are all equal but in the same time there's people who are the superiors of the others, and we have to accept that:
      Romans 13,1: "Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.".
      All the protestants are revolted against higher powers...they don't accept it.

    Another wonderful video Father Mike! God bless you and all our spiritual dads here on earth, as well as our natural fathers. That's something which bothers me about the Portuguese; we refer to our priests as "(Senhor) Padre" (Sir Priest) and not "Pai" or "Papá" (Father) it doesn't feel the same as in English when you're calling these sacred men Father, as if they were a part of your family, in this case spiritual.

    When I was young, I would always tell my mom how silly she was when she made jokes or tried to make me laugh. I meant it as a negative thing back then but I now realize my mother was trying to help me lighten up and enjoy life. Now my own children say the same about me and I'm happy to find some silly thing to say to them to get that smile or laugh. My 16-year-old son is always saying how he likes how I crack myself us sometimes. Fr. Mike, thank you for being silly in your videos! It's not often that I laugh out loud but your mannerisms remind me of my mother and myself. I'm glad there are others like me out there!

      He gave a great argument! I absolutely love this guy! I've watched all his videos, and he's offered good arguments and great advice on social topics. There are things I disagree with on the standard Catholic, Christian ideology. But it's through no fault of pastors. My objections come through word translation and definitions from original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek into English. I went to college and studied Ancient Hebrew and New Testament, with minors in Greek and Roman culture. But yeah, this man is a great communicator. I thoroughly enjoy his videos. Thanks for asking Haley! Be well :)

      Thanks Haley. I don't know how old you are, but whatever the age, you just gave me hope. You just showed such maturity that is not normal in today's society. When people have differing opinions, differing viewpoints they tend to jump to anger and lash out. You didn't. And that's a beautiful thing. Well done, and thank you. As an aside, an example of what I meant by translation and definition errors, I would point to Romans 10:4. The English (in KJV) gives us the word "end". We all know what end means in English. However, the original word is Telos in that text. Telos is the root word for teleology which means the study of purposiveness, or the study of objects with a view to their aims, purposes, or intentions. Basically, it means goal. Instead of using the word end (with our understanding of that word) use the word goal. Now it reads; For Christ is the goal of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes" ... Changes things, don't it? When you couple that with several other verses He spoke, it starts to make sense that He never intended for the law to stop. That idea was ours, due to misunderstanding the definitions of original words. We use our definitions to make sense of text. That's a problem considering it wasn't written in our language. Anyway, just a small example. Thanks again! Be well :)
