Man it’s good to see you back on Bruce! Of course working at Shane’s place is top priority but it’s still good to see you back in your garage.
Stay warm and nice job 🤙

Thanks Gary, I’m torn I really like doing both projects. But there’s only so much time. It’s definitely all good. Luckily everything is settling down. I got to tell you I love the tent set up. Great father son time coming for sure.

I’m not sure how to tell if it’s magnesium or aluminum. It was mixed information .It would be curious to ignite a little pile of the filings to see what would happen.

    Hey Jason,
I gotta tell ya, in all the years I played with VW's I never had or heard of a flywheel not fitting inside of a transaxle housing.
Not to say they can not be, Just that I never ran across such an animal.
I worked with 36 horse, 40 horse 1500 and 1700 CC engines but never found an engine that did not fit to a transaxle.
I can see that your transaxle is the later style ( 12 volt ) as you called it which is a one piece casting.
Where the early 36 horse ( 6 volt ) were two halves commonly referred to as a crashbox.
The crashbox does not like the higher horse power of the larger engines but the higher horse engines will bolt right to the crashbox.
The crashbox also required splitting the halves to remove the axles should that be required.
Your engine looks to be a 40 horse, though it may have a big bore kit which raises the CCs from 1192 to 1385 .
I do not claim to be an expert on VW parts, I am just expressing some of what I remember.
Looking forward to your experiences with this project.
    Take Care

Yeah, it threw me a curve at first. But I looked it up and I guess it’s pretty common. If the engine was built during the transition time between 6volt to 12 volt the flywheel is I think 10mm bigger and a different tooth pattern. It’ll be curious how it works out. I’m definitely learning something new here. I hope your winter is going well.be warm and safe
