    That was a blast! Flying a tactical bomber like that low and fast against players gets the adrenaline pumping. Being on the ground waiting for the A1 to pop into view and knowing your limited window to open fire adds a lot of excitement to the game.

    This was a fun little test! Hopefully they revisit the efficacy of AA platforms, as it stands, the strongest AA seems to be a person with a railgun, and this is only really effective against smaller ships.

      yeah i miss the old Ballista - it was super effective sure but it has extremely limited ammo so couldnt be used for too long. they need to improve on the current version for sure. even if not all the way back to where it once was, somewhere in between

      Mixing up the defense with a couple railguns would certainly have caused problems for the A1, though if you are skimming the surface and can get really good at hugging the ground for a run, and drop precisely I think you can negate some of the threat. Allowing the A1 to drop its bombs at a much faster rate would give the pilot some more options. Like dropping 3 in a short spread would help compensate a lot.

      They are. Flak ammo has been developed for squadron, and they are increasing the range on all weapons per citizencon.

      Can you swap guns on the Centurion? Wonder how it would fare with the upcoming flak guns or S4 rail guns which doesn't exist yet either.

    What an absolute fun video! As a Ballista jockey I really hope the devs make the ballista deadly again, because right now it has no teeth. I've done a few practice bomb runs myself at scrap yards just to get the hang of bombing, and I whole heartedly agree that the delay between multiple bomb drops is simply too slow. This video reminds me of a famous trench run from the 1970's.... watching you flying low and fast I couldn't help but say... "Stay on Target"... :)

    I believe CIG said the A1 bomb drop is tied to an animating bug. Though that came from Pipeline so take it with a grain of salt.

    Wow, awesome video. The angles taken are awesome. Seeing your tests as they are, my guess would be that at least for now, the Ballista and Centurion would fare better against an A2 and that the A1 is exactly to precise target those AA vehicles before an A2 bombing run.

    Glad to see that AA vs Bombing is immersive, if not a little poor given the current state of AA vehicles. I imagine they'll get reworked once land claims are a thing and might be utilized to defend player owned bases on a somewhat regular basis perhaps?

      it's always fun when you get to see explosions right? :) the explosion effects for A1 bombs are also some of the best in my opinion - i only noticed last night that you can see concentric shock waves around the explosions :D

    Pretty cool vids 😊. If you want a little advice, if you go bombing low altitude ( close ground) : Stay close to the ground and don't go up directly, like that any other AA can't strike you down

    Neat little test! I would love to see how it performs in a pop-up attack, too.
    Set up an engagement where your ingress with the A1 is super low, somewhat perpendicular to the target. Then a kilometre or so away, pull up and roll over towards the target to line up for the drop in a dive-bombing fashion. That should get more accurate hits while preserving low-level safety for a good while.

    Nice! So your successful run was at about 400 m/s and just under 1km. I loved your view from the ground of the A1 screaming in. Scary stuff for the Ballsitas etc.!
    Last time I tried dropping low I was caught in the blast but maybe I was going too slow.
    I saw a test by Camurai that seemed to indicate that if you drop above 2900m the bomb does not explode so watch out for that. At the other extreme, he survived dropping while stationary over the target at 400m but his ship did a couple of backflips. AT 320m a message popped up to say he was inside the blast radius so he went up a little until the message went away but he still got destroyed. Of course if you are moving fast then you might get away with being as low as 300m. I am going to try doing drops at 1k and 400 m/s to see if I can duplicate your success with any regularity.

    Agreed, faster muti bomb drops would be nice. Just to get that sweet sweet carpet bomb feel.

      yes absolutely! being able to drop a line of bombs within effective range of each other would be a huge improvement and make the question of whether or not to queue up bombs relevant. like do you commit half your ammo to one strike or try and get precise single bombs? right now the multi-bomb option doesnt make sense because of the delay between them

    I agree with what you said about the gap in bombs, in any bombing run I can think of you would want to destroy a strip of land, not spots spread out. If they reduce the delay between bombs to maybe a quarter of a second, I feel like the grouping would be much better and easier to control

    I have question but not sure if you can help.
    My shaders haven't been loading recently --> I've already deleted the User and shader folder and reinstalled the game 2x.
    But even after deleting the User folder, I can't customise my character and change my starting location.
    Does this mean there is a hidden second user folder somewhere?

    Great Video looks like fun, I think that there is some room for rebalance of Ballista and other ground vehicles once armor and stealth comes into the game equally drop ships are lacking in robustness so this whole theatre of war needs a rebalance I cant wait to see how this pans out in the future with big orgs like your one defending sites against rivals. One area I would like to see CIG concentrate on is giving ground attack vehicles like the Gladiator, Ares Inferno, and A1 the ability to carry size 4 and 5 ground attack missiles rather than just bombs these ships can carry these in their missile racks so would only require a tweak to the targeting system thereby giving the opportunity for true 'Wild Weasel' ground attack gameplay.
    Anyway great content as always.

    It is surprisingly durable, I had a scout out at brios one day and he said there was a buildup happening over there so I headed over to do a low pass, it was successful and damn she ate a lot of rounds before she went down

    I'm glad the A1 had to do this much work, and I always have to point out, this is a context where the Bomber knew **exactly** where it's target was. That makes all the difference.
    Ground vehicles have really low sig. Stealth is their biggest advantage over air craft agility. So if the A1 was over an area without knowing where the G2A was, it would be a LOT more dangerous for the A1.
    I could see platforms like the Ballista or Centurion rolling around with shields down until 100% necessary to put them up, to optimize stealth. I'm hoping the reduced sig with shields down means you can afford to so more sensor pings without giving away your location. See them before they see you.
    That should be the next test. Have the Ground vehicles post up away from the A1, and be in a different party. Tell the A1 it needs to bomb several "objective" targets (like say, three grounded Retaliators that are spaced away from each other), but don't tell them where the G2A is. See how that goes.

      my thoughts too as they had party markers and it was easy for the bombers to fly directly at them at JT they wont know where their targets are until they are targeted and close enough for a sig.

    Very nice! The special effects in SC at night are amazing.. I’m hoping to get proficient at my A1 as well, if servers start behaving :(
    I do hope they come up with new ordinances, high drag is good for those low passes but a computer calculated drop should have a more speed….perhaps a targeting pod Ui for co-pilot as well, Or target designators for ground troops. 😊

    The Spirit is a nice spacecraft, handles like a dream, the audio sound effects and slow bombing runs, equally fast when needed, makes for a realistic bomber experience. Although, melted mine after the initial fun, its really a niche ship for groups/Orgs, not solo play. Waiting on the Cargo variant. A nice ship with a place and function, no eunuch.

    I think you are showcasing there is a real need for all these ships and vehicles to be balanced in the next year or two after the engineering and gold standard passes, and we are still in something of a placeholder position with them.

    Ive been playing around with it quite a bit, first turn coupling off, everytime you accel it changes location of the red circle. Secondly you can adjust the position of the red circle on the fly by slowing, speeding up, strafe left/right, this will help you hone in. Thirdly dive dropping is probably more preferred at least in my opinion than low dropping as gives you more time to react/adjust splash zone. Also try to say out of the non-optimal thrust zone at least the top 1/3 of the bar as it makes you pretty inaccurate, speed limiting with the limiter and decoupling or even Cruise control will probably help too.

    I'm honestly pretty happy with the spirit. I used it to bomb NPCs on the orison platforms and even was able to kill some NPCs that got stuck below the elevator and couldn't be reached, saving the mission. You can't hide from the bombs lmao
    A good tip for flying in either the dark or occluded areas is to use the quick radar ping on your ship. It'll highlight and outline the ground so you can see how close you are. I do that when dogfighting NPCs sometimes so I don't overshoot and slam into the ground.
    Also in PvP you won't have neat markers showing you where everyone is. It'll be quite a deal harder if the ones in JT aren't all clustered in one area.

    It would be cool to see an AA defense grid setup around a bunker. One with multiple centurians and ballista with two crew members: one on the main turret and one in the driver seat operating the small front remote turret. Around a bunker would provide additional AI controlled turrets reducing the needed player count for the AA defense.
    Maybe the goal could be to stop the attackers from destroying the bunker turrets. Maybe this could be a location for skunkopoly?

    What I normally do is to fly low, the thrust up to bring the red circle forward of my view. Then I pull up. Targeting is probably not working as expected.

    The drop speed of the bombs is limited by the current implementqtion of the animation system, cig already confirmed u should be able to drop multiple bombs in quick succession

    while on blue press T to mark a target, it will go green, use the red circle to align to the green to hit your bombs.
    TLDR: Red ring is where the bombs actually go, blue is just a targeting circle.

    The main defence of the Ballista and Centurion are their stealth. An A1 pilot would have a hard time bombing what they can't see so having the party markers makes it a lot easier.

    With mastermodes the centurion will have a range of about 8k and the spirits SCM speed will be significantly slower than the runs you are currently doing.
    The favor will be significantly in the ballista/centurion favor with mastermode.

    I love how close to a true IADS (Integrated Air Defense System) SC is aiming to accomplish. One thing they definitely need to add however, is a ballista variant that improves the air surveillance capabilities by increasing the range and fidelity of target tracks. Allowing Ballista torps/missiles/guns to detect and shoot further away when in the presence of this theoretical variant.
    If that's not the intent by CIG - then I think the current IADS requires defensive counter-air fighters. I think then that would be telling that the Ballistas and Centurions are intended to only be PART of an effective defense. So this may not be a true test of how well this bomber can penetrate, and defeat an IADS.
    For context; an IADS in this situation is the Balista and Centurion working together with the common purpose of defending airspace/ground targets from air strikes. They are each systems in their own right, but aggregated together they form a larger more comprehensive "integrated" air defense system.
    Good video and really shows the niche each of these vehicles can serve in the PU.

    Would be nice to see CIG lower the bomb-drop timer so you could carpet bomb like the advert would imply. Seems weird that you can line up 5 bombs when there is no way they'd be effective like that

    I think the strenght in the Spirit is a Bomb run with more then just 1 ship. would be fun to watch 3+ Ballista and mby 2-3 Centurion. and have like 2-4 Spirit going on a bomb run. and carpet bomb the ground.

    If you watch the launch video for the A1, you'll notice they drop bombs back to back.

    I think ground vehicles are in great position to prevent any ships jst hovering and killing everyone on the ground. Only ships like this bomber made with clear purpose can actively engage but still have to consider the danger.

    I believe that you're not using the bombing interface correctly, Kate, at least as how I'm watching it on the video. It works this way: once the white circle is over your intended target, hold T and the circle will become green. Then a green dot will appear on the lower end of the targeting reticle and it will go up as you move closer to the green circle. Once the green dot is in the center of the cross, you must fire the bomb. It isn't 100% precise probably because server lag, but is how is intended to work :)
    I'm sorry if you already tried it and you're doing it with the white circle for another reason.

    land defense vehicles are absolutely useless in their current state, weapons from S4 onwards should have a prime range of at least 4km before falloff( nowadays anti-aircraft guns with 7.62 ammunition have almost 10km of effectiveness, why hundreds of years the front is only 1/5 of that?), the ballista and torpedo ships have been turned into almost just pieces of metal that fly because the torpedoes don't hit or are destroyed. I love this game, but the devs sometimes make some completely incoherent "balancing" decisions, and yet I still like the content this game provides to players. Very nice video, shows the real state of some of the game's items.

    I think the drop rate for multiple bombs is intended for carpet bombing. Like when hitting infantry.

      Currently the drop rate is a little over 2 seconds so to get two bombs to land within 100m of each other you would have to be doing under 50 m/s. If you are doing 400 m/s to avoid getting shot down then the bombs will land over 800m apart which is not really carpet bombing. Even bombing at 200 m/s would be 400m apart which pretty much guarantees that only one bomb is anywhere near the target even if that target is a large settlement.

    Ever considered going stealth?
    The problem is that it's a huge, rather squishy target and only has medium speed, so you can't tank anything and you can't escape half the other ships either.

      yeah it's such a shame - it was really effective not so long ago. with its limited ammo count the now unreliable torpedos basically make it significantly less attractive

    The A1 looks like it will create a massive imbalance against ground units and landed ships most people aren't going to have a ballista or centurion to watch over them while they do missions. I hope they can actually balance this but some of this stuff getting added is making me concerned.
