- Howdy everyone and today we are ranking EVERY 2D Sonic game from worst to best. Including the recently released Sonic Superstars! This video took a LOT of work so any support is greatly appreciated!

Sonic 2 was my first Sonic game in 1993, and it will always have a special place for me but when I played Sonic 3 in 1994 when it came out, I was crazy and amazed. When Sonic and Knuckles came out in October of that same year and I found out that I could play with Knuckles, I knew right away that this was going to be one of my favorite games of all time, and it still is today.
Fun fact knuckles Choatix isn’t actually about knuckles nor was it called Knuckles Chaotix it was just called Chaotix in Japan it just featured Knuckles as a playable character.

The best part of Sonic 1 for Master System/Game Gear was the music, composed by the legendary Yuzo Koshiro of Streets of Rage fame.
The best 2d sonic ranking list i've seen. It's the one that is closest to what i think, really, good job. I loved the video a lot

Good list man, is nice too see some love for the handheld sonic games, they are usually forgotten.
Being a Nintendo kid, the first sonic game I owned was Sonic Advance on the GBA, and I would probably rank it higher, mostly for nostalgia reasons

I'm an old fart who grew up on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise since the Genesis. I actually had a Game Gear and a lot of the Sonic games on it were VERY underwhelming. I had the most fun with Sonic Chaos, but I doubt I'd have the same feelings going back to it.
There was actually a fan developed remake of Sonic Chaos that was looking REALLY good, but sadly it was never finished.

I think it’s a well done video and watching and listening to this gave me good feels about the Sonic series over the years. Again, despite you feeling more negative to some of the games I view with charm. lol
I really think you did a good job ranking these games, sonic is the first video game i've played ever, when i got the genesis back in the early 90's as a kid. also i did request this awhile ago, idk if you ranked all the soul calibur games yet.
I want to rank all the soul calibur games but way way too many new games atm

Marble Zone isn't actually slow though, for the most part, if you know the levels. Neither is most of Sonic 1 8-bit. But if you don't feel like replaying until you've memorized them (or looking it up), that's fair.
It's nice to see ranking Vids from someone who actually played the games.

Really good ranking, especially with the top two as Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic Mania are by far my favourite 2D Sonic Games.
Hamtaro. I’m with you on your top two. I feel fortunate to have been a kid when the best 2D Sonic games came out. I remember buying Sonic 3 at a Toys R Us the year it came out. I had high hopes for Superstars following Mania but man, what a letdown. They need to just make Mania 2!

Just for you my man I will talk about it. I am actually playing through wunderlands right now and that is the only one I had not played. So hopefully in the next few months it can pop up. Once these releases slow down....
@TotallyTubularJonathan Take your time, man. It's a great series, though, is what I am saying. It's really one of the classics when it comes to fps, and the characters are on a whole other level.

The one I enjoy most is sonic rush. The classic open routes system opens up a bit more in it. Generally you’d think the the top route is always fastest, but that’s just overall, in sonic rush you can splice together the fastest parts of the several routes and boost down them to set crazy time trial records. And to add depth to this, you can enhance your own route further by making use of each character’s unique abilities. The few changes (much more than outlined in this video- IE the physics, shoulder button abilities) make blaze massively different from sonic, and that’s the fun of it

I don’t understand how knuckles chaotix NEVER got re released. Apparently sonic gems collection was supposed to have it but didn’t for some reason.
It either had to be emulation issues or maybe Sega wanted everything involving the 32X completely buried. 🤷
@@RM2011ish such a shame. I beat it 1 time on an emulator and thought it was pretty cool.

The best half pipe is sonic 3D blast on Saturn. Difficulty is just right, Graphics are great, and the controls are amazing, also no tails to worry about( I know you can play with sonic by himself but still) also hamtaro
One of my best childhood memories was renting Sonic Advance from Blockbuster and playing it while watching the Sonic OVA. Of course S3&K is my favorite.
I want to love Sonic Mania but I am just sucking at it. The Special Stages are a little frustrating but it’s definitely Player error. I’ve also been stuck on this one level and it caused me to drop the game for over a year. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Maybe I need to start over and try not to perfect it in the first go.
Can’t argue too much with the rankings, pretty spot on except personally I’d put Sonic cd lower and Sonic 2 higher.
My favourite 2d Sonic game is Sonic cd, just the replay ability on that one is remarkable!

Yo I love Mania and S3&K. Easily the best 2D Sonic game and are 100% must plays
Not to say the game is good, but Sonic 1 on the master system is the first sonic game I played and my first experience of video games. I remember over a decade later picking up mega collection plus and being thrilled it was included. Looking at it now it's definitely far from the best sonic game

A great list and I honestly agree with the placings. I would probably put 4 a bit higher, while putting 1 and CD a bit lower, but otherwise solid, and I have the top 3 in the same exact order.
I gotta say though. When it comes to Sonic 1... Labyrinth Zone wasn't even that bad. It wasn't great, but I don't hate it nearly as much as everyone else seems to hahaha. What I really hate about that game is Scrap Brain Zone, the final one, which is truly awful. I reached it with 23 lives stockpiled and burned through all of them. Has to be one of the worst zones in Sonic history and I'm not capping in the slightest.
Silver Castle Zone from Sonic Blast has really good music, at least.
Also you're playing the gamegear version when the best version is the master system.

As a GG fanboy I was feeling upset at you putting sonic 1 gg , triple trouble and chaos under some sonic games that I consider to be garbage like sonic 4 and shattered crystal, but that's okay because your number 1 and number 2 are also mine, so we're brothers in sonic still

No way you put any game gear game under Sonic 4, also Sonic Blast got a Master System port, and it's a good game imo

sonic 2's levels are built around going fast? that's not true at all. at least 75% of the game is slow platforming. and saying there's no bad levels? wing fortress is atrocious.

I just can't get into Sonic Superstars at all. I've tried and I've tried and I just don't like it, to me it's plagued with some of the annoying issues that plagued previous 2D Sonic such as cheap enemy placement boring Special Stages and terrible boss fights amongst other issues.
I can't get over the pricetag.
That's how Mania was too. The bonus stages were tedious and boring and the boss fights were even worse. You'd just stand there and dodge for 99 percent of the time

Sure this is subjective, but ... Sonic Superstars is utter Crap ... and so is CD, because it was never meant to be a game of itself. CD is cut Content and/or Ideas from other Sonic Games and you can feel it in every aspect: bad level design, bad music, bad graphics, reused sprites and forgetable zones. Only the Sonic Boom Songs rock.
