As somebody involved in a very large poly community, you're both right. It's usually treated as an umbrella term here. Some people just do sex, some people have more relationshippy relationships, some people even do poly where one partner has multiple partners and the other doesn't.
I don't believe in soulmates either, but I do believe that everyone has a person (or two) that they connect with on a weirdly deep level. BUT it doesn't have to be romantic. It can be a romantic partner (which is nice, but not necessary for romance). BUT it could also just be a best friend or even a rival (Moriarty and Sherlock for example). The connection and weird understanding of each other is the key, not romantic entanglements... if that makes since?

Well, let me give you a little insight because I'm a little older. And by older I'm 35. I have never found love like I had when I was younger and he was my first boyfriend. First EVERYTHING. My first child was given to me by this wonderful man. We broke up and have both moved on. I've had 4 relationships since we broke up in 2012. Never felt or found that love again.
My now husband and I first started dating when we were 14 & 15 and we are now 23 & 24. Neither of us had really dated anyone else prior. I can’t speak for him, but I can’t truly imagine loving anyone else the same way I love him. I’m sure I could find someone else nice who I enjoy and perhaps eventually love if we did ever split up, but it could never be the same as the special connection of essentially growing up together.
