This song is the epitome of good, creative worship music. Since we Christians believe in a God that is full of goodness and creativity, all Christian music should be this creative and good.
This is just good theology. This is how the patristic fathers spoke of Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Love how John is able to take a back seat in a couple spots on a masterpiece he wrote, and just enjoy the moment.

I think JMM looks totally cool a true worshiper and artist. I loved it!
I met him in person and yes, he glowed with the Holy Spirit. I was blessed for days after a hug from him. He honestly talks about his struggles with his own emotions or "demons," how hard it can be to live in this earthly world and still maintain a daily personal connection with God. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have the Spirit within him, like many of us.
We're all worshippers and all have the same Holy Spirit within us!

I love this band and music, but am a little iffy on the symbols played in the background. What is their true meaning?
Do you mean the hand? If you look closely, you can see a hole in the wrist. Therefore, the hand symbolizes Jesus' hand bearing a scar to commemorate His victory: A scar to remind Him the painful heartbreak on the cross for the joy set before Him. It is stretched out to many waters. Many waters, which cannot quench love. God's love is in the forefront, symbolizing it being greater than and first before the waters because they cannot stop His love chasing after us. Also, the waves could symbolize storms. God is God over every storm in life, and He is Lord over wind and waves. Tempests before us cannot compete with God's grace holding out His hand to command waters to be stilled. Wind and wave obeys The Lord of blazing stars Jesus The Anointed One. There is also the sun and the moon. The sun is a source of light and the moon reflects light from the source. The sun and moon symbolize how we are supposed to be reflecting light from the source of light (Yahweh). We ought to allow God's light to shine from us. That is how I interpret the symbols on the screen.

I really love this song, but I'm a little iffy on the lyrical wording "He has cheated hell" - Jesus didn't cheat anything, He defeated it. He won fair and square, He didn't barely wing it- He overwhelmed the enemy. I think cheating hell makes it sound more like He escaped. Death, sin and hell are enemies and Jesus triumphed over these things.
+Jeremy Gonzalez I definitely think you're thinking the right way for sure. I see the purpose in that phrasing is to show that sin and death and hell and its demons all thought they had actually won. "Cheated death," while potentially iffy like you said, does play at the defeat of Hell. They thought that Jesus was done, they did it. The people that welcomed Jesus as king and messiah had sentenced him to a real death. But hell couldn't escape the promises of God, and as Jesus defeated death and sin, Hell's victory was vanquished along with its power over him. I dont think its so much that Jesus "cheated" death, but that death would have been "cheated" of its sting.
+Jeremy Gonzalez i'm understanding "Cheated" as we as humans are destined to Die because of the fall of man. In that sense of the word God saved us from certain death without his sacrifice on the cross, Hell had our death certificate printed out and ready to go, but God gave himself to death so he "Cheated" death out of it's right to take us.
Jesus Christ beat Hell with both power and wisdom. He "Beat Hell" fair and square, but also outwitted it out of its birthright fair and square, which might be called cheating.
***** For man, sure you can cheat your way out or into something. But I believe God doesn't cheat, He defeated sin, death and hell fair and square by His power alone. Take it or leave it, friend- that's just my personal opinion. Still love JMM's music.
I agree Jeremy. JMM may have written some good songs, but this is nothing more than an ear-tickler. It's possible to have worship songs that are scripturally correct. The saddest part is the number of believers here that don't realize the errors or embrace them.
I also have a problem with "Friday a thief." Jesus was not a thief, nor was he accused of being a thief. Pilate said "I find no fault with this man." He hung with two thieves.
He was accused of being a theif of God's authority, title, and glory.
The song makes a definitive statement that he was a thief; not accused of being a thief. Jesus wasn't a thief or accused of being one. And being hung next to thieves doesn't make him one. ASL is right. This song makes an untrue statement about the son of God in a manner that depicts it as fact. This isn't open to interpretation or artistic license. Let's stick with the Biblical truth.
It's "untrue" if you read it like a Westerner reads poetry. Would you like to back up your implicit claim that the author believes Jesus stole something on a Friday and then stopped being a theif afterwards?
And the technical term for this poetic device is that it is a metaphor- a statement that is not literally understood to be true by author or critic, but which contains truth by suggesting a more abstract thing than is literally said (here it is that Jesus takes on the sin and is accused of sins).
Unless Jesus has the literal profession of a man who cares for sheep.
