    I do know valleys are actually known for having high winds compared to surrounding areas. Think it has to do with the same thing that causes the ground effect in F1 and pressure differences in planes to cause lift. Basic idea is that the geography causes a pressure difference that forces air into the region at high speed, and because of the walled in nature of the valley, the wind carries the speed through from 1 side of the valley to the other

      Yep, by Bernoulli's Principle, if the flow gets constricted while the flow rate remains constant, the flow velocity must increase. Technically not exactly what Bernoulli's Principle says, but it's implied because of it.

But lasers trigger a catastrophic reaction when they strike the shield, typically resulting in a massive nuke-like detonation. The thing is, use of nuclear weaponry is universally forbidden in the Imperium - and the effects of the detonation are hard to distinguish from the use of nukes. So nobody wants to use laser weaponry against their enemies, no matter how potent, because they'd risk accidentally drawing all the Great Houses in to declaring open war on them and wiping them out.

      Because there aren’t ranged units in Dune. Personal shielding tech is so good that even the most basic trooper is bulletproof. The only way to breach through shields is to move slowly into them, because shields still need to let air in. Thats why everyone uses swords even though Dune is set 10,000 years in the future, they had to develop a special combat style where you slow your attack as you reach the opponents shield.
      You could also use a laser I guess, but a) lasers in Dune are the opposite of 40k lasguns in that they’re super rare and expensive to maintain and b) shooting a shield with a laser will cause a nuclear reaction that would kill the shielded person, but also probably you too.

    • @RvEijndhoven
      @RvEijndhoven 2 года назад +45

      @@guccifer764 So... Couple of things wrong there:
      Lasers are actually not super rare and expensive, they're just not commonly used in infantry combat (they're mostly used in attacks on civilians or against vehicles that are too large to be shielded) because of that reaction with shields you mentioned (and the fact that atomic weapons, including weaponising that reaction between lasers and shields, are outlawed and will have the entire empire come down on you).
      And shields are actually relatively rare in combat on Arrakis, because active shields not only attract sandworms, but send them into a killing frenzy (because the electrostatic effect that shields work on mimics the sensation of another worm and when worms encounter each other in the wild, they fight each other to the death, except when they're being ridden by Fremen who have to actively keep them from killing each other and when the Fremen engage in mass troop movements involving multiple worms, the Fremen steering them usually have to stay on after dropping off the rest of the riders and steer them in opposite directions before releasing them to keep them from attacking each other right then and there).
      Which is why Arrakis is one of the few places in the universe of Dune where you *will* find mass ranged combat and lots of laser weapons, because shields are much more rare.

    Valley Wind is common in locations where the sun heats and cool the mountains and valleys at different times. You get stronger winds in the valleys as the plateaus cool at night, the cooler air will flow down the cliffs into the valley, then come morning the now colder valley air will be warmed by th sun and will begin to move up the plateaus. And basically this happens throughout the day and night as the temperature difference of the air above and below the plateaus changes.
    Additionally, if the wind currents are flowing in a direction that passes the colder air through a valley, it will act like a funnel, increasing the air flow as the same amount of air tries to pass through a smaller space

  • @blankblank8424
    @blankblank8424 2 года назад +253

    For the wind it depends on the directionality of the wind and the shape of the valley. If the wind is blowing directly into the valley and the valley does not have many bands that would act as a wind break the valley could then funnel the wind into the valley creating an area where the air is forced into a funnel causing it to increase in velocity.

    So I've tried out the game, and won as both Atreides and Fremen. My Atreides early-mid game was much harder than as the Fremen, and the only difference in settings was that the Fremen game was on a large map rather than medium. Theres a bit of replayability in trying each faction once, and trying to get the victory that they're sort of meant to get. Atreides have an easier start towards governor, Fremen towards domination (cause their units are stronger). I think the Harkonens have some spy stuff, etc. I'm really hoping for them to add other factions like we see in the Dune board game. The Emperor, the Bene Gesserit, maybe even the Spacer Guilds. I'm pretty confident that if they make it possible for the map to be larger and house more factions, as well as make Diplomacy a thing you can actually do (you can currently vaguely influence the other factions opinion towards you by trading, but as soon as they attack you it plummets pretty quickly) then replayability will be much better

    A note on the combat, Ranged units can be really strong. The Atreides specifically get MASSIVE bonuses for attacking with a joint force including a lot of ranged units. Their rangers give all units a stacking buff that increases their damage by 5% and their melee troopers gain 10% damage for each buff they get from another unit. The real time option and ranged vs melee gives you the opportunity to micro manage battles, manually targeting individual enemies and splitting your army for maximum effect. You can also block enemy melee units with your own if you space them correctly and protect your ranged units. There's a lot of micro potential to win battles and take minimum casualties without overwhelming strength. I personally managed to defeat 2 melee enemies with 3 ranged units because I was using micro to kite the melee units, then attack them with the ranged units when possible. All the factions seem to have something to promote using a mixed army instead of just melee. The Atreides heavy weapons team also applies a 30% damage debuff to all enemies it hits with it's aoe attack and the other factions have something similar.
    Also the 2 houses have the option to use nukes.

      @@squashiejoshie200000 Yeah seems like other factions might have better ranged units and buffs etc, but blocking is not possible. It'll only work because you're facing the AI, who stops to fight you. In reality you can just run right through the enemy units and stab their ranged. If the ranged unit is running away, it can't shoot too.
      Ranged as usual will always be decent for exploiting AI in video games, but without a proper blocker melee will hold a stupid heavy advantage.

If you block those with melee units, that works. Alternatively, kiting works extremely well in home territory, where your units don't lose supply but the enemy does. Also supply units like the caravans and Atreides support drone can keep your units healthy even while kiting in enemy territory. Opponents have to choose between trying to focus down an 800 hp support unit or fighting the kiting ranged units.

    Another thing to consider, the planet is a mostly desert biosphere so areas of lower elevation tend to be mostly windy, though it is not a pleasant wind you would feel because it is dry and quite arid. Higher elevations tend to suck in the moisture for the reason that the mountains and high areas act as this pressure container making clouds drop their rain and moisture at the peaks, when the clouds/winds drop in the shadow of the mountain, it has lost nearly 2/3s of its moisture that it began if this was a coastal region. It's complicated and quite the topic to cover in Geography.

    People complain about this not being Dune 2 part 2 (its like complaining that fallen order wasnt the sequel to empire at war, different devs and they dont claim to be sequels) but i think it at least follows in the tradition of the classic dune series of games. Dune 1 was a unique RPG/Strategy/Point and Click adventure hybrid with what was the beginnings of RTS style gameplay in combat, it was very unique, then dune 2 came out and expanded on the strategy gameplay and just so happened to take off into the RTS genre, and now we have spice wars taking inspiration from RTS but trying to innovate by combining it with 4x features. The dune games were always innovating and trying new ideas, just because one game was massively influencial doesnt mean they cant keep trying new ideas... i'm glad to see the new concepts implemented although I do definitely hope to see them improved (the 4x mechanics atm feel a little lacking, especially diplomacy!)

    • @myzimensi
      @myzimensi 2 года назад

      Actually Dune and Dune 2 came out about the same time, they were being made by different companies and they just decided to call one '2' to split them apart. Dune 2000 and Emperor Battle for Dune were very similar to 2 (2000 was a straight up remake).
      That said- I wish Spice Wars did its own thing and was good- but I don't know, it doesn't grab me, at points the theming seems great and then at other points you've got the oddities of Artedies being able to peacefully take over villages and Fremen lacking say- an honour duel option to flip a village. Also fremen soldiers being eaten by worms just seems... wrong to me. I feel like if they were going to be playable they should have more unique mechanics.

    Sandworms canonically stick relatively close to Spice fields. What's why Harvesters are as vulnerable to them as it gets.
    And melee units are somewhat superior to ranged (infantry) units du to personal shield technology (as far as the spaceborn factions are concerned). Fast objects (like bullets) can't pass through them. The harder you hit the shield, the more effective it becomes (unless you hit it with a really big and/or explosive projectile). Even in melee fighters have to be really careful about the intensity in which they are strike thier opponent.
    Laser weapons are really funny in the Dune universe. If you hit a shield with an energy weapon, it basically causes an explosion that can rival early nukes.
