    WARNING
    Most scooters do not allow operation while something is plugged into the charge port. For safety reasons obviously. Also, the charge port is meant for just that, charging. It has specs that are totally different than the operating mechanism of the scooter which is powered by the battery. Look at your charging adapter and read the specs on it. For Gotrax it’s 42v 1.5amp, you can’t just stick homemade battery pack of 37v 7amp into the charge port and say away we go! IT DOESN’T WORK THAT WAY AND IS VERY DANGEROUS!!!!
    For most scooters charge port the best you can do is build a portable charger that you use to RECHARGE the scooter battery when it’s low. The same build principles will apply as shown in the video, however, you have to build it with specs intended to take the place of your wall charger for the sole purpose of charging not giving your ride a boost. So when planning you need the voltage on your battery build to exceed what’s stated on the charger, for example if your charger states 42v dc out, then you want your build to output around 47v. Then you have to match the amps, you can reduce the amps on your battery build by using a current limiting resistor across the pos/neg end of you battery. You use ohms law to get the proper resister value for the desired amps, I=v/r where “l” is the amps you want to achieve and “r” is the resistor value needed. So in our Gotrax example you’ll need about a 28 ohm resistor soldered across the total neg/pos end of your battery build on the output connector not the connector you’re using to charge your battery build. This will get you to the 1.5 amps needed for charging and will not damage the components on the other side of the charge port or melt any wiring inside your scooter. The reason you can’t just stick 7 amps into a port that’s only designed to accept 1.5 is obviously the wiring and circuit behind the port may not be rated to accept such a higher amp value. THIS IS HOW FIRES START!!!!
    If you’re gonna do this do it right, for the safety of yourself, your family, and your neighbor. Lithium Ion batteries are NOT to played with.

      I was also thinking this. That 250w motor is drawing max 7 amps. Meaning that the extender battery has to provide about 3.5 amps if they are both the same capacity, more if higher. My scooter is the same model as his and the charging port is fused at 3 amps. Idk how he made it work, if...

Some of the reasons for the danger have been revealed in the comment section. DO NOT parallel this system through the charge port! No qualified professional would advise you to!

    Are you sure this is safe? Matching the voltage is easy but what about capacity and chemistry? Can you safely boost through the charge port? Is that really running parallel? Can you boost a regular lithium battery with a lifepo4 of the same voltage through the charge port? Really? This isn't really running them parallel is it? Thanks!

    • @whitcwa
      @whitcwa 4 месяца назад

      You make many good points. Matching capacity is not necessary, but matching voltage is. So mixing LifePO4 with "regular" Li-ion is a no-no. I would not use the charge port. It does not have the same wire gauge or connector capacity as a discharge wire and connector. I paralleled mine at the battery power out wires, and I disconnect the external pack to charge them separately. It charges twice as fast that way. It was easy to run a couple of wires out to an XT connector. I used a pre-made battery pack because it is a lot easier.

    How do you limit the output of the booster pack to 2 amp at 42v? Most barrel connectors are low power. You might be able to do 3 amps but any more than that you will melt the connectors. I have been wanting to do this for a long time but the amount of power the battery can output concerns me alot.

    How does the charge port handle a battery connected directly to it? If I look at the wires behind the charge port, they are way thinner than the cables connecting directly to the original battery. Will the extra battery load work with the charge port or is there risk of faster wear in the long term? Maybe swapping out the charge port wires to thicker gauge wire would be a good idea?

    I suppose it would make sense to put a fuse in there too, just in case you ever accidentally connect the booster when the two batteries are not at the same voltage. Anyway, I'm looking for good sources of info on building a 'split pack' where a vehicle does not have a convenient place for a single large battery, so you might want to put multiple smaller batteries. While the basics are obvious (the batteries can be connected in parallel or in series, as if they were a single cell), and some safety concerns are obvious (keeping the same series number when connecting them in parallel, making sure everything can handle the voltage and the amps etc.) but some details are less clear and it seems there are different ways to do it, different ways to solve the problems inherent to this system, and I haven't yet found a good definite place to look for information on that.

    • @dtape
      @dtape 3 года назад

      According to Micah's instructions, you should only connect a booster battery to the main battery when the charge levels are the same. If you try to connect a booster battery after the main battery is low that might be dangerous, with too much power going from the booster battery to the main battery at once. As I understand it, you want the charge levels to be the same so the power only trickles from the booster battery to the main battery as needed when the main battery is in use and slowly getting used and discharged by the vehicle motor.

    Im reviewing this again and I think the way it is described it can damage some internal batteries and even cause death if your not careful LOL
    The safe way I think to build a booster for extra range that plugs into the charger, would be a pack exactly to mimic a wall charger. So you build it up 6 volts above your bike or scooter battery voltage and limit the charging amps coming out of the booster pack to maybe 5 amps or 7 amps with a current regulator. You could even just have it a 2amps, but that would take a long time to charge.
    When you regulate the current and charge 6volts above the lithium's voltage rating then your booster is acting just like a regular charger and the internal BMS will manage the charging safely and correctly. For example if you have a 36v ebike then you make a 42 volt booster pack and attache a current regulator to the dc out. So in other words your not connecting in parallel, but creating a portable charging system. and the goal of this is not so much to instantly double range for riding continuously, because the safer style of i being just like a charger, would make the charging time slower than the discharging from riding, but it would increase range and work great for the type of riding where you take some brakes and not riding continuously so the charging could catch up with the depletion from riding. For example if you go to school and your bike is parked outside then the bike "re-charges" from any depletion from the booster while it is sitting without an external wall plug.
    LifePo4 cells can be damaged by charging too fast, and even explode, that is even why Micah warns in his video the voltage of the two batteries needs to be the same and in the same state of charged if connected parallel. It cannot just connect a dead battery in parallel with a fully charged booster. So it is dangerous if you were to drain your battery from riding and then plug in a fully charged booster directly in parallel because two much current all at once would run through too fast into the lower "deader" battier. EXPLOSION DANGER!!!!. So a current regulator is needed and then you can connect even a 6 volt higher pack with even a lot of watts, as long as you regulate the current going in to the charger it is fine.
    Now maybe you can do exactly what this video says exactly with the booster being the same voltage (charging both up fully like in the video) but only if your really know your ebike or scooter really makes the charger port act like a true parallel connection.
    If you read carefully all the comments below and answers from Micah to other people questions and compare them all and the video, you will see he has contradictory statements in the video and his comments and might not know what he is talking about for your scooter. He says it both that it is creating a parallel connection sometimes and other times he says it is just acting like a charger. If it is truly parallel it is not at all operating like a charger but simply powering the motor of the ebike at the same time as the internal battery. It might work in the scooter Micah tried it in because in that scooter it is totally a parallel connection.
    It is really tempting to do this if your bike or scooter can handle it because everyone sometimes wants more range, but I would suggest to people to research more what kind of connection your charger port utilizes and how it wires through tour particular bms to charge the battery. You need to know if it is parallel and then you need to know how to be very careful, or take the safe route I suggest above and use a current regulator between the booster and the charging port to the internal battery

      @jesp999 4 года назад

      @@quynhchi148Its probably the case that all e bikes and scooters are not exactly the same in terms of bms and circuitry protection. I would like to understand what kind of BMS the manufacturers that sell extra battery packs use. MY escooter is a popular model and it does not have an extra battery and I am going to take it apart and look at the bms. I want to learn more about BMS's. Of course it can work with some as in the video above, but since the explanation in the video and discussion below have inconsistencies I wonder what the distinctions are in the BMS' that make the difference. In theory if the batteries are not matched a lot of current can flow when they are first connected because they will want to balance with each other. I do a lot of research into boon docking batteries lifepo4 I know there are different types of BMS's. Some of the brands of battery packs are listed in their specs that they can be put in parallel (adding a second battery) or and some are clearly say in their instructions and specs that they cannot. Unlike buying lithium "deep cycle" power storage batteries, when you buy an escooter or ebike these kind of details are often not listed on the battery pack because they do not like people to hack the batteries. In boondocking batteries like people use in rvs and vans they area usually made for some versatility. Will prowse has a great channel on these type of batteries. ruclips.net/user/errolprowse I would love to extend my ability to travel long distances. It is not hard to build battery packs. Maybe people do not know about this option. If it is safe on most scooters or we had a list of major scooter brands it works on that would be good, If someone else has a better description explaining why this can work with proper care just as described int he video above in terms of bms types or more details, please share. I think we are at the point where people are going to build self made electric motorcycles with Nissan leaf battery packs for long range travel. .

      Why rechargable battery cell that doesn't allowed parallel connection? maybe they just be cautious because the cell has too small of the internal current and by parallel it decrease the resistor by n times and it make high current flow when the voltage different is significant?. If that's the case i would do the top balancing and use the current limiter and voltage limiter so it would work just fine. You're right about the balancing, that why i said the voltage must be somewhat the same for the input battery and the scooter battery.

    • @jesp999
      @jesp999 4 года назад

      @@quynhchi148 Your right cell internal resistance is something they must make the decision on but also other things. Like Im sure the manufacturers that allow a second battery expansion have a proper plug and proper gauge wires to handle the current where the connection is made between the batteries. High current bikes need very thick wires between the batteries and the motor. If one puts batteries in parallel one needs to use the right gauge connection. (BTW fully charged 1860 cells are 4.2 volts.) So my line of thought is if it is not a biked specked to do this and if it is a very high power bike or scooter say above 1000 watts, that is a lot of current to run through the charging port. Im not sure if BMS can handle the current but I know from my experience doing stuff in my van with high current DC wires get hot and the longer the wires the worse it gets. Some charging ports in rare cases are a few feet from the battery, but even a 3 inch wire if the wrong gauge can melt or act like a fuse. So if one beefs up ones wiring maybe the mod is ok. But also if the plug is not rated for high current the plugs and the plastic around them can melt. Some scooters are 52 or more volts and 30amps. a lot of chargers and ports use like 18 or 16 gauge wires built for charging at 1.5 or 2 amps, maybe 45-150watts depending on the bike charger system. So it depends on the system one has. Also if one runs a ebike at full speed the motor can draw a lot of power running through those tiny wires, even if they do not fail it will create a situation where the battery closer to the motor runs out faster. So it is not that lithium batteries cannot be put in parallel, it is how one does it that makes a difference. It needs to be done in the right way. When I say some battery manufacturers say "not for parallel connection" it is because they did not make the battery wiring and bms strong enough to handle that. A voltage and current regulator can help provide safety but then one would still have an issue if that then makes ones built in battery run out of juice first because its wiring is more direct to the motor and the proper gauge for the current to flow to the motor, but the secondary battery is limited and will discharge much slower. So your ebike will run on decreased current or not run at all if voltage drops when the first battery runs out. I did not think of the wiring and charging port till now before I was just thinking of the BMS, but this issue of wiring gauge and type of plug connecting is a bigger issue for trying this mod bike and scooters with a big current draw. I think one needs to know ones scooter or bike well before trying it.

    @EbikeSchool.com Thank you so much for making this video Micah! I owned 2 original GOTRAX GXL scooters one for me and my Girlfriend. The range was really becoming a problem especially if we wanted to commute, take long rides in the country or on Holidays here in the U.K.
    After watching your video I was on a quest to build the exact same exact batteries you built for our scooters and with the guidance of this video, few month of making mistakes wiring my connectors incorrectly, shorting 2 chargers and 2 scooter batteries they are finally finished.
    I’ve build 2 of the exact same batteries using the V2.1 Vruzend Kits with 3 cells in parallel using Samsung Q30 cells with a capacity of 9 Ah each and man is the scooter even faster than before, it does 22mph all day long now, so fast I wear a helmet as it’s just as fast as my Brompton Bike. If not faster!!

    All credit goes to you Sir, once again thank you for the awesome content! I’ll be posting a video of the finished builds soon for watching for name in the video credits.

      @@TecSanento No, they were both at the same voltage because the scooter had been used that day. It burned out while being used. The charge port is designed for 42v / 1.5A, the draw from the motor will max at 250w at 36v... So a total of 7A could be pulled... And let's just say half comes from the external pack = 3.5A!! And that is the issue.

      If I were to order today, I would only buy scooters that have the battery in the “floor”. I can’t remember… but I think the XR has a more standard 10S3P down there. I used a step up voltage converter and two Ryobi One+ 18V batteries in parallel. As the batteries are removable I can charge them both at the same time as the scooter if I have three sockets. The step up converter provides a constant 52.2 volts in to a 54 volt pack at about 3-4 amps. This means the 18 volt batteries are delivering in excess of 10 amps until they are completely drained. The power protection electronics in the batteries shut them down if they overheat or under volt. It’s a few layers of protection but if the batteries die, I just buy a another One+ battery. Do not connect the supplies with more than 1 volt difference unless you like loud bangs. I already have a copy of your book

    Wanted to fyi you of the topic on the WATT numbers on motors and what to look for of certain companies that advertise of what they have to sell. I came across a sale on title of 350/500/750 watt e bike and remember what you mentioned and I notice this as the Bike is all the same with the 500 and 750 having bigger tires than the 350 including the battery for each one. Well, I know enough now I went ahead and got the 350 watt GEARED Bike and I just swapped the battery intended for 350 and got the one separate of same specs of the 500 and 750 they were selling. I basically got the 750 without their fatter tires and higher amp battery, lol. Im going 24mph on the 350 daily of new battery of same amps as the 500 and 750. I saved 300$ of getting the 350 watt which actually is same motor for the higher priced ones of same model. Its really a 1000 watt motor as I checked the wattage amps when I juice up throttle all up it reads 1000 to 1200 and it drops to NOMINAL OF 500 to 750watts once on cruise control and dips down to 50 when I use PAS at 24mph.

    Alright, I finally got around to doing this and it was a fail. The person making the video is WRONG. The charge port is NOT spliced in parallel into the battery. It goes to very thin wires that are welded to the circuit board. So within about 2 miles, I fried that part of the circuit board and can no longer directly charge the scooter battery. I went ahead and removed the charge wires and spliced in two thick wires directly into the hot and ground wires coming off the scooter battery (which was difficult because those wires are only about 1.5-2" long) to the new battery. This seems to be working fine and I can charge my extra battery while it is spliced into the scooter battery and they both charge up equally and my backup battery's power management tells the charger when to stop charging (if I bypass my backup battery, it seems to want to overcharge the scooter battery now). Anyway, this was kind of a headache and I regret trying to do this. An alternative that is much safer to your scooter would be to buy a small 100W "solar generator" (what they call them, but they are just a lithium battery attached to an inverter that "can" be charged with a solar panel, but also with a normal 120V outlet) and mount that to the scooter and just plug in the charger and have that running while you ride. That keeps the amperage at a safe level that you know won't damage the charge circuit (I believe it is 1.5 amps - you might be able to get away with a slightly stronger charger, like a 2 amp and eek out a little more distance). If you ride hard, it will give you about another 2 miles. If you are riding slower or waiting a lot at stoplights, it will go much further. This is what I was doing before I tried this upgrade. On the plus side, my scooter will now go about 20 miles (I wired in a 20Ah battery), up from about 6 miles. It is just not a very good setup and feels pretty sketchy to me. I bought a new handle bars that have all the electronics that were ruined by this hack in case I want to switch back. Right now, it only cost $59.

    Spams his expert DIY battery building book, tells people to connect their booster packs through the charging port. ANYONE WATCHING: DO NOT DO THAT. THIS IS BAD ADVICE. The charging port is not meant to take drive current, just low-amp charging; it has narrow wiring and a small connector. If you do this and you're lucky, you'll lose a lot of power through wire resistance and the booster pack will work inefficiently. If you're unlucky, you'll destroy the charging connection. If you're really unlucky, you will melt the wires and quite possibly short out all the things and set fire to your scooter. The only proper way to do this is with a Y-cable at the main battery connection using suitably thick wiring.

    I'm thinking of building an extended battery but I noticed my electric scooter shuts off when plugged into charge. I noticed you plugged in the extended battery to what I assume is the charge port, will I be able to do the same thing or will my scooter shut off when charging?

    If you bought quality batteries it would end up a lot more expensive than buying a 37 volt 7.5 amp battery £111

    Does anyone actually sell the backup battery like this? My gotrax battery is dead and they haven't restocked in over 6 months!

    I probably would have gone into detail about battery continuous ratings to match scooter controllers and pairing the battery to the actual battery in scooter not just the bms charge port if matched correctly for maximum efficiency.
