- The subject of Soma's newest shokugeki is none other than bear meat! Given three days to prepare, Soma begins practicing with the ingredient and finds it sweet but with a potent gaminess. It requires proper season to reduce a gamy flavor and Soma realizes how badly the odds are stacked against him up against the master of spice.

I like how they completely skipped over the fact that all bear meat contains trichinosis. If you don't heat the entire thing to at least 160°f then you'll end up getting extremely sick.
That's only 70°c almost any cooking method will easily bring the meat to temperatures above that.

Chicken has to be cooked at a higher temp. It's pretty much common sense at that point.
Why would people eat bear? Seriously, I thought it was just anime logic.
I tried it before. Theres lots of bears here in canada. If prepared properly it actually has a rich flavour. For me though I like to preserve just a bit of the gamey flavour.
Interesting, I've never tried but it seems like it'd be one of those acquired tastes.

@@cergusmernas4415 gamey flavor is very hard to describe, wild game tend to have gamey meat, such as raccoon and boar, venison is probably one of the tamer gamey meats because of its lean nature, and bear more so because of how fatty it is. At its core gamey is sometimes called a sort of "rotten" flavor, it can taste like meat that has turned. If you've ever had steak in the fridge for too long where its turnt but you've cooked it anyway, yeah that's kind of the flavor. The difference being turnt meat has a bad texture, gamey meat still has their fresh texture but that hint of rotten taste.
This may sound like it would be awful for eating, but since the meat is not actually rotten you can temper the gaminess with spices and proper preparation, and a little touch of that rotten flavor can actually be quite pleasant. If you've never tried a game meat before perhaps start with venison as it's really a beginner's game meat (even more so if it comes from a corn-fed deer, that will temper the gaminess even more)

Honestly cooking with spices is the best thing about cooking! When your doing meat or veggies you can change the flavor to your own unique style with just 3 random types of spice or sauces! It’s pretty incredible when you think about it!

To be honest, I always felt like they were insulting Hayama's skill by trying to get him to use artificial methods and extra hands in this episode, as if they thought his nose and talent with spices that got him so far in the first place wasn't enough

once i ate armadillo and trust me pal the flavor is strong in the dark meat, almost unbearable, that being said the white meat tastes like turkey

If this was the pre-winter to winter the bear meat would have less game taste due to pre-hibernation diet (fruits, nuts, and plant matter). If it was hunted at spring or after, the game taste would be more promininent due to diet of fish and meat.

Pan frying bear meat is a recipe...for disaster. Bear has a reputation for being a tough meat, so low temperature and slow cooking are the order of the day. Most bear gets stewed in the slow cooker or made into a sausage (1/3 bear, 1/3 beef and 1/3 pork to level out the gaminess, spices to taste), but a dry rub and lightly-smoked bear roast slow-cooked as you would a brisket works pretty good.

Unicorn Gundamgamer I guessing you don’t watch a lot of anime because that’s what a lot of anime characters do.
As pointed out in Jojo's Bizarre Adventuire: Golden Wind, the meat of predators tends not to taste very good. Predator meat requires special preparation, unlike the meat of farm animals, which is capable of tasting good all on its own with little preparation.
The exception would be snake and fishes I think. Both of those meat already tasted good by itself.
@@vivanyatodd5036 Snake tastes like chicken, being pretty bland. "Fish" covers an extremely wide number of species, including herbivores and carnivores. However, neither birds nor fish are considered mammals, so their bodies don't follow the same rules that creatures like wolves, bears, etc. would. What we can say with certainty is that carnivorous mammals tend to taste absolutely awful.
@@FirstLast-cg2nk I think snakes are more savory than chicken, but yeah neither are mammals. I've never eat carnivore mammals so I don't really know how it tasted. 😂
I had a piece of bear meat about 15 years ago and it didnt smell at all it just had a really gamey taste that is for sure. I would not suggest it as you should very well know its very very fatty and that is not good in this instance.
