Jazz and the visual arts have always enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship. Last year the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis put that bond front and center with an ambitious original program called Portraits of America: A Jazz Story.
The concert featured new compositions by members of the orchestra, directly inspired by works in the collection of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark. So in this special episode of Jazz Night in America, we'll not only hear the resulting music but also get inside the inspiration - learning how Grace Hartigan's abstract painting Rough, Ain't It motivated alto saxophonist Sherman Irby, and which qualities in the Romare Bearden collage Sacrifice spoke to tenor saxophonist Walter Blanding.
At a moment when it's not possible to visit an art museum in person, Portraits of America invites us to experience color and shape in a new way. "I love the fact that you can take a painting, a piece of art that isn't changing, and then create something that's constantly changing to represent it," reflects multi-reedist Ted Nash. "It almost seems like it wouldn't work, but the music can actually make the painting move." --NATE CHINEN

Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra is always phenomenal.
For Never and Forever of Walter Blanding gives me goose bumps!!!! What a Masterpiece!!
Still can’t find it solo anywhere else, like it’s a magical one-off!
They sound good thru my cheap computer speakers. Imagine what it would be like to hear them live in person.
i'm gunna find out tomorrow in Seattle... I'll let you know...
I went to a concert of theirs and it sounds... powerfull, I guess would be the best word to describe it. Really great experience.
@@jimmymacnj So how was the concert?
@@wyattbigelow8243 great night of music.... these musicians are incredible.... the sounds that they can coax from their instruments is truly amazing... breathtaking solos, astonishing improvisations and complex musical arrangements wrapped in beauty, delivered and received with joy pretty much tells the tale of tonight's performance... Open with a Kenny Dorham piece.... next was Stevie Wonders "Smile Please", Monk's "Brilliant Corners" Marsalis arrangement swings unlike Monk's heavy blues inflection on the tune, Ellington's "The Mooch" (excellent, a fav of mine) a Charles McPherson Ballad "Nightfall" (beautiful) a Monk/ Latin hybrid piece written by the bassist (very cool), a few others and Lee Morgan's "Ceora"... encore, took us out with a Second Line... just loved it.... a night of listening to world class musicians playing the music you love best... ruclips.net/video/ECw3WAX41OA/видео.html
@@wyattbigelow8243 if I have a criticism of the concert it would be not enough Blues and more second line Nawlins jump for Mardi Gras... some Hot 5's and 7's would be nice...a few in the crowd had umbrellas...unfortunately left unfurled until the encore... but overall great night of music by some of the finest musicians in the world.... going to see The Basie Band at Benaroya Hall in April... it'll be a different thing but I'm looking forward to seeing the difference... Chick Webb vs Benny Goodman Redux at the Savoy...
"A hot jam on Grand" blows my mind
For Never and Forever.... both can be felt

Puc identificar: Trombó, bateria, contrabaix, clarinetista i pianista habituals acompanyants del mestre de la trompeta. Wynton, com sempre, toca amb un coixí de bons músics. Marsalis mai em deixa indiferent. Bona música, bons intèrprets i bon so. Màgia. Gràcies, mestre. Salutacions des de Barcelona (Catalunya). I can identify: Trombone, drums, double bass, clarinetist and pianist usual accompanists of the trumpet master. Wynton, as always, plays with a pillow of good musicians. Marsalis never leaves me indifferent. Good music, good performers and good sound. magic Thank you, master. Greetings from Barcelona (Catalonia).

10:18 went so hard for no reason
I know all these guys are geniuses, but Dan Nimmer doesn't get enough recognition and mentions!!
💜☄️🌌
Dan Nimmer is truly a Genius, not that the rest of the band members aren't, but at times, Nimmer seems to get the least recognition

The alto soloist at 41 minutes achieves a better tone on the Mark VI compared to the Yamaha I think. Opinion only. Fine playing all round.
What date was this performance?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😂🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
ειναι λάθος το βιντεο που προβάλλεται απο πισω:αντί να κοιτουμε εσας,τους οργανοπαιχτες δηλαδή,κοιτουμε το βιντεο!!!!

Why are they using condensers instead of dynamics?

Marvellous concert. But although I love jazz I hate bass solos and drum solos. I don't think I have heard a single jazz track that would not be significantly improved by taking out the bass and/or drum solo. And I say this as a bass player. (Albeit not a very good one I must admit)
