The Best Toilet/Shower Setup For Vanlife? How to Make Your Own

  • We designed a sealed retractable toilet design in our most recent van builds! Toilet, hot shower, niche, toilet paper holder, and clothes line all contained in a small footprint. Where space is limited, we think this is the best use of it!
The slide out Cuddy composting toilet is easily stowed behind a stainless steel, gasketed hatch conveniently when not in use. In this video we share the process of how we built it.
    Products Mentioned:
    Cuddy composting toilet: compocloset.co...
    Acudor 18” gasketed hatch
Mapei Ultrabond Eco 350 sheet vinyl glue
    Nautilus retractable shower door
    MaxxAir Deluxe fan: amzn.to/38brXSE

Much respect to you guys for the great design and workmanship. Your shower is really top notch and better than most RV/travel trailers. It does, though, seem like a royal pain in the butt to go through all the steps just to use the toilet. I guess I'm not cut out for van life, but I admire your grit.

I have the same toilet. It's an unfinished prototype at best. Flimsy plastic, they weren't using stainless steel until recently so all of the metal parts are corroded, and it is not "ventless" as they claim. It collects a ton of moisture (inches) if you don't vent it. And to vent it, they don't even make a proper kit. I had to get a kit from a competitor and cut new holes. The price is nice, but can't recommend it.

So great you proved that my idea is right ! I'm planning a van conversion and was toying with this idea. I'm glad someone already tried it 😇.

Thanks guys! I built mine after seeing one of your earlier videos and really appreciate you sharing this idea. My slides are mounted on an 8020 frame which I secured with bolts through the floor. (didn't want it popping in the back while sitting on it). Two things I learned along the way: the gasket reduces the 18" door opening to only 17" so keep that in mind when choosing a toilet. And, the bench height will need to be about 6" higher than the door height since the slides are above the shower pan. I ended up getting a custom made 18" wide x 16" high door so the bench could be a little lower. This does further limit the toilet selection but it can fit the Trelino Evo M.

Outstanding. I bought Cuddy after your recommendation a while ago and with the concern of what waterproof door to use being answered I can order it and keep moving forward with the build, as soon as my fingers thaw out. Thanks guys!!!

Great video! Watching it again and love it. Note: the hinges are stainless steel. We upgraded the Cuddy in August 2023. The stainless is not marine grade so it is still a good idea to use WD40 just in case.

It's a nice design, but the door should really be on the right side of the opening so it will allow people to get in and out without having to stow the toilet every time to walk by it out the door. That way it can be converted only to a shower when needed and be a toilet the rest of the time

Are you using the Acudor AS-9000 gasketed 18x18 access door? How large is the gasketed frame inside the access space?

Looks good but shouldn’t the door opening be reversed? That way you would enter the shower and be in front of the toilet opening, not on top of it and then , when sitting one the toilet , one would have some privacy even with the door open . And you can go in and out even when the toilet is “deployed” :)

I'm planning to convert an eSprinter (electric) and want to save weight as much as possible to minimize the impact on range. Your shower/toilet build looks great but I'd like to reduce the weight further. I'm considering using aluminum angle inside of wood. It weighs about 1/2 what kiln-dried 2x3 weighs. It's also lighter than 8020 and cheaper. I would rivet the aluminum angle to fasten. Do you have any thought about this approach? Gracias.

Curious if you’ve ever thought of using aluminum studs for framing instead of wood? Would that work in a van? Seems like it would be lighter.
