this is the first time i'm trying a novel challenge!! i tweaked it to write 50k by the end of the year. it feels ambitious for me but i'm really excited about this idea (a sapphic western novel)!! much luck to you and your compassionate writing endeavors!

I love the idea of being compasisonate with yourself because I think a lot of artists neglect that about themselves, especially when passion turns into constant production (quantity over quality). I was going to participate in NaNo this year (first time too) but because of the controversies, I decided to try and write at least 50k for Nov and Dec which I feel like will be more attainable to me as someone who struggles with consistency and commitment to schedules (perhaps undiagnosed ADHD hahaha). But for the first part of this month, I am finishing up a short story that I'm submitting for a contest then going to dive into the first draft of my YA Romance :)
    Wishing all the best, Rachel

Have never participated in NaNoWriMo, seems like many previous winners talk about ignoring it and joining their custom writing challenges, still a beginner writer and I’m watching this video instead of editing my works-

My November is thesis writing! I've never been a high output/high frequency writer, so writing the novel part of my thesis has been slow and steady work since September; my plan has always been to finish the first draft for Christmas (there's a whole other essay part to write too afterwards), but I've been realizing as I write that the draft is going to be considerably longer than I expected with the same deadline. November's challenge is upping the productivity without burning out!

i'm excited for you to get back into writing!! it can be such a weird feeling to shake off the rust, and really difficult at times. i hope it goes smoothly for you, esp with the 25k goal
i stumbled across something about a novella november challenge on tumblr the other day, and it just so happens i've been brainstorming a novella idea for the past month or so, so i'm aiming to get 30k in that project. it's about witches and self love. i'm also trying a new outlining and drafting method, so i'm curious to see how well that process works out for me

As someone who generally hates writing challenges, I've burdened myself with a year-long writing challenge :D
I have to churn out a THOUSAND pages in that time. Since the challenge started at 17-4-2024 I hope to make it by 17-4-2025. So far it's going surprisingly well? Somehow??

doing Nanowrimo challenge 1st time. Motivated to write. Although daily writing goal seems more challenging then the writing itself. Probably comes from being late diagnosed i'm in my mid 50's. But I'm up to the challenge. No one could have predicted that I would do something like this. I say naysayers you have no idea what I am capable of, as long as we are doing something that we enjoy doing. Creative juices let the flow begin.

I really like this, Rachel! So many people are doing different writing challenges instead of Nano. I’m glad you’ll be working on SUNLESS GROUND again! Will it be a trilogy?
I haven’t written anything since August when I wrote a short story for a trad published anthology that got rejected (it’s a YA horror short story). I’ve been querying my PhD dissertation novel since July 1st, submitting other short stories, applying to TV writing fellowships, remote job applications, also freelancing (I’m a freelance fiction editor and authenticity reader), and teaching my first 6-week class on Writing Disabled Characters in Fiction online (I would love to teach it again next year!). Freelancing can be a lot of work when you are busy.
I’m not doing Nano either, but I’d love to finish drafting my YA horror novel (adapted from a horror pilot I wrote last year) by my birthday (Christmas Day) or January. I guess we’ll see what happens! 🤞📝😬

I’ve always said that November is the worst month NaNo could’ve chosen for a writerly challenge lol but then again what do I know because every month is hard for writing for me 😅😂 I think my goal is to also not write 50k haha I’d shoot for 25k but it’s like so scary??? I’m also currently in the cycle of not writing and having a writer crisis lololol yay me! my nanowrimo 2024 plans also include not participating haha; I'm currently homeless and in a mental health crisis that can only be rivalled by my great mental breakdown of 2022 (tm) so my november plan is gonna try and stay alive. I'm so grateful that I do have the capability to engage with my writing outside of yk... actually writing (it's the maladaptive daydreamer in me what can I say) because otherwise truly I would not have thought about any of my wips in maybe a year? I do struggle with imposter syndrome a lot when my writing practice contains absolutely no writing, but I'm trying to get better at just accepting where I'm at, like ofc I'm not going to be able to crank out 50k right now I literally don't have a home or a firm grasp on reality, and if lying down and just thinking about how gay my main characters are gets me through the day then that's a huge accomplishment in itself. that being said, I really do hope to get back into writing for reals once things in my life stop being shit haha

Definitely focusing on day to day is the best priority but I’m so happy to hear you’re able to think about your projects-thinking about how gay my main characters are also makes me happy lol! I'm managing to access some stuff but the system is difficult to navigate even without the added complexities of chronic illness and fatigue, neurodivergence and mental illness so it's been a struggle. escaping into the fictional worlds I've made and also ones that others make (love hearing you talk about your cinematic universe haha) has been a welcome distraction though
