The existence of the OGL also helped the KOTOR 1 & 2 come to fruition, as they used the level up system and basic stats from D&D. The OGL was basically the opening of arms to people to create what they want can. Very telling how we have reached a time in the West where creation and imagination is now disregarded for boiler plate copies of what came before and/or applauding the butchering of what came before.

To be more precise they used a slightly modified Star Wars D20 ruleset. But since Star Wars D20 was created under the OGL, you're technically correct. The OGL 1.0 also spawned a lot of games like Conan D20, Warcraft RPG, EverQuest RPG and World of Warcraft RPG which were more interesting than D&D itself.

I have to say, I am a 68 year old gamer...retired and game all the time. In the last`3-4 years , the way games "feel" has changed so much. The games didn't use feel so cookie cutter, box checking, and have to include all of the latest fads. The problem is, they are starting games chasing one fad- and by the time they are done, that flavor of the month has gone down the road. And when I see a game like Dragon Age go from dark and gritty, tactical combat, with a story that you felt had gravitas...to cartoonish hack/slash/roll generic combat, lets crack jokes, look at me I'm a pansexual!!....I have quit buying games, they have been saving me a lot of money in the last year or so.
Just why I only get small dev stuff. Fallen Aces, Angels Fall First, Trepang2, Hong Kong Massacre, Mud and Blood, In Sound Mind, Dusk... there's no reason to buy stuff from woke/soon to be woke mainstream chasing chumps. I wouldn't have gotten Stellar Blade even if I had a PS... and there's enough reason to not even own a PS in the first place.

A year late but I'm glad you're finally mentioning how we're working to push back on WOTC. For those interested Tales of the Valiant (ToV) is the new playsystem under the new ORC license. Its now available for public purchase. I got my KS kit last week and it's nearly seamless for someone wanting to switch over without disrupting their campaigns or builds with learning or converting to a new system.
Honestly your missing some of rhe facts about how they were trying to run the OGL with DND they were monetizing streamers and other people too claiming what ever they make is now property of wizards of the coast so if for example I made a race in DND my own race wizard could go oh.. I like this.. YOINK!!!!!!!! its mine now not yours and I don't have to give you anything for what you made it now belongs to me. That was another part of why there was SOOOOO MUCH rage. I used to stream my DND games and tabletops, and my group instantly started talking about changing the game we were streaming else, due to what wizards was trying to do.

I’m pretty sure ‘Baldur’s Gate Producers Panic’ is an incorrect title, I’m fairly certain the producers of the game were Larian, and Wizards is just the copyright owner in this case. If the title were ‘D&D Producers Panic’ that would be correct, cause playing Baldur’s Gate 3 gameplay kinda implies whoever made Baldur’s Gate is a part of Wizards

The sad thing is... diversity by itself is not a bad thing. It never was. THE PROBLEM starts when, instead of creating actual and genuine diversity, you REPLACE one majority with another, and then call the first majority racists or misogynists when the former majority complain about not getting an equal representation, or when they complain that the writing on diverse story is just not good. I believe that good writing and diversity CAN exist in stories, but it needs to be done with good writing and likeable characters being the top priority. Plus, not every story, movie, tv show or game necessarily needs to have diverse characters, or JUST diverse characters. A good way to not make diversity feel forced or mundane is to SLOWLY incorporate it into games and entertainment (when it's written well), while also continue to make entertainment that dosen't have to include diversity.
OGL was a masterful strategy because it made the brand ubiquitous even in places where people were lifting concepts from the brand. Everyone still knew that it was derivative of the DnD brand and so it had the effect of bolstering DnD products through a free marketing pathway that other brands can only dream about. To get this kind of marketing through traditional means is extremely costly and tbh impossible for most brands.
The majority like fans and customers should be respected. Selling stuff to only minorities is bad business practice as it will not make the company any money in the long run.

@osrthejourney I understand that there are games not doing this, regardless many IPs I love have been politicized. Borderlands is a prominent example. The thing is, I'm not just talking about video games or movies, or comics, or ttrpgs, I'm talking about how people in the industry have been talking about us. People in prominent rolls in many of these industries have said openly acual bigoted things in a public setting in their capacity as a employee and received almost no form of punishment. At best, we will get an apology and a slap on the wrist.
This is why gamers never win. Some people with more sense try to warn you, don't buy the game once you even get a whiff of censorship. Do not even buy if they "cave" and give you what you want, don't buy any future games from them either, stop voting with your wallet guys, vote with your apathy so these companies go out of business shrieking in silence so everyone can pick up the ashes once the company is toast. 6:45 TPCI will have to remove Pokémon Scarlet and Violet from eShop and stop making more game copies because the Ed Sheeran song license might expire. It can be said since there is going to be a Marvel vs. Capcom game collection coming up, and the collection can be removed from the stores when the license to use the characters expires too.

Honestly, wizards of the coast is mostly irrelevant to the existence of DnD. It’s a table top game and you can make your own rules and lore. So most of the trash they posted can be ignored. The main problem is any media they produce like movies and games. But you can largely ignore those as well.

Baldur's Gate 3 isn't woke. It's full of DEI, but it's the rare good kind. The type that isn't pandering, forced, obnoxious, entitled, pompous, pretentious. Being gay isn't anyone's identity in the game. The main lesbians in Act 2 just are and that's it, there's no attention demanded by them being gay, just lovers. You can play gay or straight, you can be basically trans. There a wide variety of skin colours and the black characters don't listen to hip-hop. The best characters in the game are arguably women. Their character stories are quite relatable to many women, as they include losing autonomy. You see: Real DEI requires EFFORT. But 99% of these consultations or ESG-schemes are lazy. DEI is just a checklist. They don't care. They say they do and shame you if you don't believe it.
The OGL leaks are even worse than what Endemyion went into. It also granted ownership of properties made by third parties and the rights to remove content that WotC deemed to be offensive with no guidelines on what is or is not offensive or problematic. It basically gave them the power to shut down anyone they didn’t like or had a different opinion.
SO HAPPY that I haven’t spent money on Magic:The Gathering in YEARS. Which is INCREDIBLY sad because that game is so much fun and I would have recommended it to anyone with a halfway capable brain….. which would only lead to MASSIVE cognitive improvements, due to the game being so cerebrally potent. Playing MTG allows one to build abstract and critical thinking skills, to an actually impressive degree. Growing up I have spent TENS of THOUSANDS of dollars (if not more) on MTG, collecting and playing for almost 20 years. Even I enjoy the Japanese region Pokémon games. It is best to go for the Japanese imports like especially HGSS. You can still try and look for the Emerald English version.
Most players used the OGL for home brew. Oh, something you want isn't in the books, a creature or class just doesn't exist? You can make them yourself and publish the info on these things freely so other people can use it in their campaigns. This was one of the backbones of the D&D community and why it thrived for so long. THen they tried to flip the script and say that they won't let you do this anymore and retroactively try to argue that anything that was successful under this deal now owed Wizards a cut. It was, obviously, a disaster. Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic games actually have their class system and feats almost directly ripped from how it works numerically from the addition of D&D that was current when the games were made.

This is very simple. Take the DnD 3.5 the way it was. Replace the d20 roll with 3d6 roll. Replace "critical on natural 20" with "Critical on 17+", replace "Critical on 19-20 with "Critical on 16+" Replace "Critical on 18-20" with "Critical on 15+". KEEP EVERYTHING ELSE THE SAME. Instead of 6 attributes, use 9. Strength, Dexterity, Stamina, Intelligence, Wits, Perception, CHarisma, Manipulation, Appearence. Your willpower is your (Int+Wits+Per):3. And you have a whole new system. Instead of Drizzt D Urden, say "Trisset De Ourdan". Instead of Elminister say Ale-administer. Instead of Mind Flayer say "Intellect ripper". This isn't a joke. There is a series of wrestling games called Fire Pro, and overthere they bypass each and every copy right by making it "close but not quite". Stone Cold Steve Austine became Rock Cold Steam Odin. Gladiator Mike Awesome became Radiator Michael Auful, Yujiro Sakata - Yuji Nagata. Underground - Undertaker. And there ain't a damned thing anyone can do about it.

What’s funny is I would guess at least half of WotC and DnDs target demographic is likely made up of white men… (the general consensus is the average age range for people who play DnD is between the ages of 20-24, that player base is about 60% male and just as a crap shoot I’d say probably 50% of those men are white if I had to guess) regardless of what the number actually is if the DnD fandom actually listened I would think WotC and in turn Hasbro would probably take a massive financial hit, assuming of course the main fandom is still buying WotC merchandise
Do it, then sit back with popcorn as they go belly up. Get friends together and learn AD&D. Or, at the least, stick to 3.X. 5e is just a dumbed down version of that anyways. Try some new games even. Grab the rules for Battletech online, make some mechs and play a campaign. Like, literally make your own mechs. I've got a skipping stone, that I glued arms and legs on, that I still use as a King Crab. When it comes to Table Top games, be them RPG, Wargame or anything else, the books are guidelines, not rules. Pick, choose and modify them however your like when playing with your friends. These companies only own the IP. Your time playing and how you do so, outside of their pandering events, is out of their control and they get no say in it.

You can't copyright game rules. The OGL was just them acknowledging that they don't own any of the rules or concepts that they were built on in a way that would get them good PR for being "generous" in "sharing" their rules.. The only parts of D&D that are copyrighted are the pictures of the creatures, and the names of the original settings or characters. To try and retroactively change the OGL would get them slapped down in court with punitive civil penalties against them if they tried it.
I kinda hope that they try and just get slapped so hard in court that they lose any attempt for copyright forever for DnD. (Concept of DnD, the name "Dungeon & Dragons", etc.) Ok not all Copyright, obvious artist stuff would be copyrighted.
The OGL allowed people to use the names of things and creatures, so if it went away that would mess with a lot of smaller creators who don't have the cash to fight back, and would likely be in hot water as the bigger voices fought it out with WotC
Watching this video just made me realize what a great work Tactical Adventures did with Solasta Crown of The Magister, a indie studio made a great D&D CRPG with zero woke politics in it, i bought the most expensive version just to support those guys.
None of those things WotC is now greedy and jealous for would have been made in the first place had OGL not been OGL. It's the same with Blizzard and WC3's map-editor. Had Blizzard already had the "everything you make is ours" policy that they had for SC2's map-editor onward, there wouldn't have been a DotA and other such things.They would have just exploited their own fans in cold blood, and thus lost all fans.

To be more precise they used a slightly modified Star Wars D20 ruleset. But since Star Wars D20 was created under the OGL, you're technically correct. I have to say, I am a 68 year old gamer...retired and game all the time. In the last`3-4 years , the way games "feel" has changed so much. The games didn't use feel so cookie cutter, box checking, and have to include all of the latest fads. The problem is, they are starting games chasing one fad- and by the time they are done, that flavor of the month has gone down the road. And when I see a game like Dragon Age go from dark and gritty, tactical combat, with a story that you felt had gravitas...to cartoonish hack/slash/roll generic combat, lets crack jokes, look at me I'm a pansexual!!....I have quit buying games, they have been saving me a lot of money in the last year or so.
Just why I only get small dev stuff. Fallen Aces, Angels Fall First, Trepang2, Hong Kong Massacre, Mud and Blood, In Sound Mind, Dusk... there's no reason to buy stuff from woke/soon to be woke mainstream chasing chumps.
I wouldn't have gotten Stellar Blade even if I had a PS... and there's enough reason to not even own a PS in the first place.

Its now available for public purchase. I got my KS kit last week and it's nearly seamless for someone wanting to switch over without disrupting their campaigns or builds with learning or converting to a new system.

I believe that good writing and diversity CAN exist in stories, but it needs to be done with good writing and likeable characters being the top priority. Plus, not every story, movie, tv show or game necessarily needs to have diverse characters, or JUST diverse characters. A good way to not make diversity feel forced or mundane is to SLOWLY incorporate it into games and entertainment (when it's written well), while also continue to make entertainment that dosen't have to include diversity.

OGL was a masterful strategy because it made the brand ubiquitous even in places where people were lifting concepts from the brand. Everyone still knew that it was derivative of the DnD brand and so it had the effect of bolstering DnD products through a free marketing pathway that other brands can only dream about. To get this kind of marketing through traditional means is extremely costly and tbh impossible for most brands.

@osrthejourney I understand that there are games not doing this, regardless many IPs I love have been politicized. Borderlands is a prominent example. The thing is, I'm not just talking about video games or movies, or comics, or ttrpgs, I'm talking about how people in the industry have been talking about us. People in prominent rolls in many of these industries have said openly acual bigoted things in a public setting in their capacity as a employee and received almost no form of punishment. At best, we will get an apology and a slap on the wrist.

Honestly, wizards of the coast is mostly irrelevant to the existence of DnD. It’s a table top game and you can make your own rules and lore. So most of the trash they posted can be ignored. The main problem is any media they produce like movies and games. But you can largely ignore those as well.

Baldur's Gate 3 isn't woke. It's full of DEI, but it's the rare good kind. The type that isn't pandering, forced, obnoxious, entitled, pompous, pretentious. Being gay isn't anyone's identity in the game. The main lesbians in Act 2 just are and that's it, there's no attention demanded by them being gay, just lovers. You can play gay or straight, you can be basically trans. There a wide variety of skin colours and the black characters don't listen to hip-hop. The best characters in the game are arguably women. Their character stories are quite relatable to many women, as they include losing autonomy. You see: Real DEI requires EFFORT. But 99% of these consultations or ESG-schemes are lazy. DEI is just a checklist. They don't care. They say they do and shame you if you don't believe it.
The OGL leaks are even worse than what Endemyion went into.
It also granted ownership of properties made by third parties and the rights to remove content that WotC deemed to be offensive with no guidelines on what is or is not offensive or problematic.
It basically gave them the power to shut down anyone they didn’t like or had a different opinion.

Even I enjoy the Japanese region Pokémon games. It is best to go for the Japanese imports like especially HGSS. You can still try and look for the Emerald English version.
Most players used the OGL for home brew. Oh, something you want isn't in the books, a creature or class just doesn't exist? You can make them yourself and publish the info on these things freely so other people can use it in their campaigns. This was one of the backbones of the D&D community and why it thrived for so long. THen they tried to flip the script and say that they won't let you do this anymore and retroactively try to argue that anything that was successful under this deal now owed Wizards a cut. It was, obviously, a disaster. Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic games actually have their class system and feats almost directly ripped from how it works numerically from the addition of D&D that was current when the games were made.

Instead of 6 attributes, use 9. Strength, Dexterity, Stamina, Intelligence, Wits, Perception, CHarisma, Manipulation, Appearence. Your willpower is your (Int+Wits+Per):3. And you have a whole new system. Instead of Drizzt D Urden, say "Trisset De Ourdan". Instead of Elminister say Ale-administer. Instead of Mind Flayer say "Intellect ripper". This isn't a joke. There is a series of wrestling games called Fire Pro, and overthere they bypass each and every copy right by making it "close but not quite". Stone Cold Steve Austine became Rock Cold Steam Odin. Gladiator Mike Awesome became Radiator Michael Auful, Yujiro Sakata - Yuji Nagata. Underground - Undertaker. And there ain't a damned thing anyone can do about it.

What’s funny is I would guess at least half of WotC and DnDs target demographic is likely made up of white men… (the general consensus is the average age range for people who play DnD is between the ages of 20-24, that player base is about 60% male and just as a crap shoot I’d say probably 50% of those men are white if I had to guess) regardless of what the number actually is if the DnD fandom actually listened I would think WotC and in turn Hasbro would probably take a massive financial hit, assuming of course the main fandom is still buying WotC merchandise

Try some new games even. Grab the rules for Battletech online, make some mechs and play a campaign. Like, literally make your own mechs. I've got a skipping stone, that I glued arms and legs on, that I still use as a King Crab.
When it comes to Table Top games, be them RPG, Wargame or anything else, the books are guidelines, not rules. Pick, choose and modify them however your like when playing with your friends.
These companies only own the IP. Your time playing and how you do so, outside of their pandering events, is out of their control and they get no say in it.

You can't copyright game rules. The OGL was just them acknowledging that they don't own any of the rules or concepts that they were built on in a way that would get them good PR for being "generous" in "sharing" their rules.. The only parts of D&D that are copyrighted are the pictures of the creatures, and the names of the original settings or characters. To try and retroactively change the OGL would get them slapped down in court with punitive civil penalties against them if they tried it.
I kinda hope that they try and just get slapped so hard in court that they lose any attempt for copyright forever for DnD. (Concept of DnD, the name "Dungeon & Dragons", etc.)

The OGL allowed people to use the names of things and creatures, so if it went away that would mess with a lot of smaller creators who don't have the cash to fight back, and would likely be in hot water as the bigger voices fought it out with WotC
Watching this video just made me realize what a great work Tactical Adventures did with Solasta Crown of The Magister, a indie studio made a great D&D CRPG with zero woke politics in it, i bought the most expensive version just to support those guys.
None of those things WotC is now greedy and jealous for would have been made in the first place had OGL not been OGL.
