I’m probably one of the few Americans out there who really wants to see a modern (English translated) Sumo simulation game. Going through training, nutrition, chores, matches, etc. while rising through the ranks in the quest to become Yokozuna.
Here's another gaijin who would *love* to see that game ! Creating your rikishi, ( choosing your stable, stats, appearance ) and then starting from Jonokuchi, working your way to the Makuuchi. Picking up sponsors & special prizes on the way. That would be *awesome*
Sumo is great fun to watch on the nhk world tv channel, you get the matches in quick succession without much ceremony, makes for an exciting 20 minutes each day for a fortnight every 2 months.
I'm currently thinking about making a sumo game myself. And this video motivated me even more. Seems like my approach is still kinda fresh and not overused, like lot of genres.
I think he pretty well hit the nail on the head with that in his video here, the sports popularity has dwindled in recent years. That makes for probably what amounts to even fewer sumo video game fans.
Very interesting stuff! I remember reading about a Sumo game starring Takanohana & Wakanohana back in the mid-90s- looks like it's "Waka Taka Ōzumō: Brothers Dream Match". It seems like Sumo creates a very fast-paced, but highly-covoluted style of gaming, which might not be for everyone. That most of the characters will inevitably look the same probably doesn't help.
I remember mid 80s/early 90s there was some Sumo on C4. I must have watched it literally once when I was a kid, it was quite good but I think more of a focus was placed on how much and what Sumos eat, etc.
I used to watch it on C4 but I recall it as a serious sports programme. It did have segments about how the sumo wrestlers lived, but I was able to get into the sport and follow certain wrestlers. It was cool.
That was a fantastic series, I remember it well. It was narrated by Lyall Watson, and at the time the number one wrestler was the unforgettable yokozuna, Chiyonofuji Mitsugu. Both sadly passed away now.
I was looking at the January tournament on the NHK World app on my phone and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Will be watching the March tournament later today.
Great video, thanks! Have tried a few of them... it's Sumo Spirits that I really want to learn how to play better, otherwise as you've mentioned the Tecmo games are a nice simple way to enjoy.
Anyone have any idea how to play Ōzumō Spirit on snes. Cant find translated instructions anywhere and I get my arse kicked everytime on the game can't seem to decipher it 😂😂
That Simple 1500 game looks great, love the artwork. Wasn't aware of the label until Simple 2000 in PS2 era, discovering joys such as Remote Control Dandy SF and Earth Defense Force. You're right, there were some real diamonds in the rough.
Great video! Idk if you'd count the WiiWare Sumo game as newly unique or a supped up remake of the Ozuna game but I had good memories with that too. You have an in game achievement to become the heaviest Sumo ever.
I remember seeing Sumo wrestling for the first time when I was a young kid, watching James Bond You Only Live Twice. Always thought it was a strange but interesting sport ;)
I'm not what you would call a Sumo enthusiast but I always found the sport and its place in Japanese culture intriguing and I have some knowledge on the sport and its legends but my biggest exposure was its appearance in anime such as Aaah! Harimada!!! and when I followed the career of an Egyptian Sumo wrestler Ōsunaarashi Kintarō (trans. Great Sandstorm, real name Abdelrahman Shalan), who became something of a national sensation for a while here in Egypt after he was promoted to the top tier makuuchi division and had two victories against yokozuna ranked wrestlers but dropped in rank after injury problems and was forced to retire in March 2018 after being involved in a traffic accident when he was driving without a valid license. These games sound exciting and I would be interested in playing them once I get the chance.
I came to see what Kim was going to make of 64 Ozumo, one of the weirdest games on the N64, but unfortunately we got the sequel instead, which looks much worse (and the first game isn't exactly great). The actual wrestling part is almost incidental as the game focuses on your wrestler's personal life and strange minigames that have you doing things like eating dinner or controlling your sleeping character as he rolls around outside for some reason.
I remember playing a Sumo game on the C64. Searching revealed it was an event in World Games by Epyx. Your comment near the end reminded me of "A Fistful of Yen" ;)
It's not a sumo "wrestling" game, but I can recommend "Sumoman" which came out a few years back. That features a sumo wrestler who finds himself in a platforming world. As you can imagine, sumo wrestlers aren't well-adapted to such challenges and the game gets very funny, very quickly.
A great sumo game was eat fat fight on wiiware, which you could use your own mii and build them up by training such as sparing and other mini games and you have to eat tons of food to put on weight, it's great fun watching yourself getting bigger and bigger. Nice controls, you hold the wii mote nes style, apart from the food eating were you point. You fight against sumos from all over the world, even female sumos as well. with lots of moves you can pull off, sure you can just slap them in the face till they fall out the ring but that gets a bit boring, it's more fun when pull off a move such as a throw or a trip or a slam. Even after you've completed the game you can carry on fighting getting bigger and stronger. A great fun game from 2009 so not sure how you'd play it in 2020 if you don't already own it. Oh and it was a good fun 2 player also. I still play it today.
I remember the UK N64 magazine giving glowing import reviews to 64 Ozumo games and them hoping for a PAL release all the time. Dunno how it plays but it looks hideous, even for N64 standards.
That was very cool thank you Kim! I don't think I've ever seen anyone review any sumo games before ha. They look fun. Think i saw an Alex Kidd rice ball in there somewhere. :p Have a great week!
I'm hoping for a first person sumo vr game. I think vr would be perfect for sumo! A sumo manager game also be nice. Would cool to have your own sumo stable. Thanks for the video! I only knew the Konami game.
I rather liked Tecmo Sumo Wrestling when I discovered it on an NES emulator nearly twenty five years ago. The characters are as adorable as sumos could conceivably be. Also, since I always see them so close together in ROM lists, someone should make Aa! Harimanada vs. Aaah! Real Monsters.
Never played a Sumo game or watched much of it, i know there was a Shounen series about Sumo but didn't see that either, most i know of Sumo comes from games. Okay, and series with them like Kengan Ashura that had a sumo wrestler, or Baki with the new series being pretty much the author getting interested in Sumo recently and thus the champions are all amazing fighters and you even get several chapters of them beating MMA fighters as everyone talks about how great Sumo is.
Nhk world, highlights each day at 4:30pm. The tournament is running now, it lasts 2 weeks and runs every other month.bit strange this time as there’s no audience due to corona but still well worth watching
Only Sumo game I played was one of the events in Oriental Games on the Speccy. It was pretty awful. I remember watching Sumo back in the day and I'm pretty sure Brian Blessed was the commentator. Was really enjoyable.
There is a sumo game for IOS that is a bit similar to the 3D game. Less realistic, but possibly faster as well. www.reddit.com/r/Sumo/comments/hvj77a/a_game_for_learning_about_sumo/
@@wikiwikithisisspartaargodi2142 i mean, i do, and this is the first time I've ever seen this channel - and as far as i know, japanese people are, in fact, real, and enough of them paid money for sumo wrestling games that they kept making them. just because you and your dipshit friends aren't interested in something doesn't mean it doesn't exist

Love your Sumo and Japanese wrestling videos. Thanks!

I think a sumo game is an excellent idea. - Hard to know what kind of control mechanics would best suit it though.
@@PigeonPlucker in my case it should be a card game
The closest i got to Sumo games was playing as E Honda in Street Fighter II, This will be cool to see
And also Taka Arashi, the one and done sumo wrestler from Virtua Fighter 3.
Don't forget Yokozuna in WWF Wrestlemania.
And Ganryu from Tekken 5
great vid, as a big sumo fan the sport's long absence from video games saddens me.
I think he pretty well hit the nail on the head with that in his video here, the sports popularity has dwindled in recent years. That makes for probably what amounts to even fewer sumo video game fans.
Amazing stuff as usual Kim. Very entertaining. Dosukoi!
I never thought I needed a sumo fighting games video until now.
I want so much a real Sumo game, with a real mechanics, without funny. The real SUMO, honor and perseveration.
Oh thank you so much! I love Sumo and I was searching for Sumo games for a while, you help me a lot.
Great Video The only Sumo Video Game I ever played was the Sumo portion of World Games by Epyx/US Gold

This is probably my favorite video you've ever done. Excellent, excellent work. Dare I hope for a sequel based on all the kendo games?
Dare away!
Another great piece of work, Kim: well done.
I have faint memories of playing World Games on the C64 back in the day, which included a Sumo competition.
I watched Sumo on late night TV as a kid. My favourite (if I recall correctly) was The Mighty Oak. Great vid as always Kim. You are a true pro !

Haven't watched the video, but a Kim Justice video about Sumo games is the straw that got the camel to become a Pateon supporter.
I’ve never ever played any sumo games before but after this video I’m defiantly gonna be checking some out
Some looks like proper fun
