Message to all - it does not matter how old the documentary is - this channel and what Kokua Films Hawaii does is preserve and display such educational films and clips so the people of Hawaii and the world can glimpse into the past and see what it was like - KFH has many films that cannot be shown involving Hawaiian history due to copyright - Hawaii's limited video past is something we try to preserve and present to the world for viewing pleasure only - we hope you enjoy what you see - Aloha KFH
Aloha from Hawaii Sweden - we are glad you stopped by to see the video - Hawaiians were the first non-Japanese to become Grand Sumo Tori - Look up "Akebono" otherwise known as Chad Rowen Aloha!
I could say a lotta things... Thanks hawaii for being yourself. Thanks for uploading to free! Thanks for japan for sumo. But honestly, thanks for helping me find my love of filmmaking again
In Seoul, Korea, with repect I have been watched your precious video of SUMO and enjoyed it everytimes. Koreans have been got our own SUMO called Ssirum which is familiar except all the time during the fight of the ssirum you must hold tight the satba which is similar with Mawashies, it is like a sumo kappuri yotsu state. I was a amature ssirum player as a kid, and had learned japanese. During the learning days i knew about sumo and enjoyed it, even play with my nikkei hawaian, Japanese hawaiian. He was a gentle giant, i am big too but he is bigger. Goodtimes. Thank you for let me recall beautiful memories about hawaii and Sumo.
great documentary! I don't know much about sumo, but always enjoy it when I happen to come across it. though this international sumo is not for me, keep it old school!
I love how we use the word "typical" in Hawaii like the one guy saying he's a "typical local boy" which means a regular guy, but the way we use it, in that way, is to mean a wholesome kind of kid, I guess what on the mainland is called an "All American" boy. But, also, say someone does something rude or gross, say they blow their nose on their hand or something like that, the Hawaiian response is to tut and say "Typical" it's a real burn.
Mahalo Nui for watching and leaving a nice comment - These men were always fascinating to me - I looked forward to Saturdays nights when Sumo from Japan would be on - Miss those days...Boda - KFH
As kaio518 said the footage from this video is ooooold like mid-90's era-ish. I am a former U.S. amateur competator and it truly is sad to think of how little the sport has grown in the mainland (I can't speak for Hawaii.) I would even venture to say that it has digressed a bit. Lastly international sumo poses zero threat to Japanese sumo but is merely a way for those of us not in Japan to participate in the sport! Rituals or no the sport will always have its rituals in Japan!
I'm in DC USA. Very interesting docu. Maybe I missed it, but I had some questions about the physical requirements of the sport...however it was still very informative! Very professional!
28:30 out practicing surrounded by haolekoa when you smell the smell, it's late and time to go home! (that plant emits a distinctive smell when the sun goes down - it's gas released in the process of closing its leaves which it does at night).
When was this shot and produced? Just curious, I really enjoy watching this documentary and it encourages me to continue to press forward to progress my brand of sumo 😊🙏🏻.
Very nice documentary. I looked up Emmanuel Yarbrough to see how long he lived...died in 2015 at 51 years old. Peak weight was 882 pounds. Too bad he didn't take his own advice and slim down, or else maybe he would've made it to 70.
Greetings from Hungary! :D Fun fact, here we have a village named"Havaj" what says exactly Hawaii with our pronunciation and we use to make jokes about it :D Hali!
Start with judo. You should be able to find a halfway-decent school in Hawaii. I don't know about sumo, you'll be at a disadvantage to Japanese who have done sumo and judo from a young age, but many Mongolians and Hawaiian have found success in sumo
And here we are in 2021 and nothing has changed.. sumo association has just passed more anti foreigner rules and regulations.. they want to preserve the past at cost of the future
I got more interested in watch Sumo during the covid lockdown. I can appreciate the reasons why the Japanese want to keep it sacred. You had that American sitting there eating ice cream, he trains part time, competes and still mocks it. I’ve never even considered training, my knowledge on Sumo is almost non existent… even I know you keep your mouth shut and respect. That’s just common courtesy in day to day life. What a fool, he is team mate just sat there embarrassed for him.
I now see the reason the Japanese don't want the world invading into Sumo . Seeing that poor display of reverence to the culture of Sumo made me sad . A ring girl ? A canvas ? Yarbrough talking about Wu-Tang preists ? UGH .
Don't get me wrong I was , and am still happy , that Akebono Mosashimaru and Konishiki represented the US so well . But they did it buy respecting the sport as much as succeeding within it .
German girls donot practise in snow. They are very competitive and dedicated. Sumo is more a matter of the mind. Cool, calculating the risks and not being afraid and applied intelligence. Big does not mean better.
LOL! I guess you couls call it that, but ti me, it reminds me of when I went to see Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant wrestle, my seat was all the way up in the "Nose Bleed" area, I think we paid $6 for our tickets, right as those two came out, I was like F**K this! I had to see how big he really was because way up there, he was tiny, I got up from my seat and ran all the way down to the ring, I got within 10feet of both of them, holy shit they were both Monsters! Hogan use to claim, he has 24 inch Pythons! (Biceps) and let me tell you, he sure the hell did, this guy you can tell, he's not all there but I'm sure he wanted to know just how big and tough that Popolo Sumo wrestler really is, just like me.. you might get a kick out of this, an Akebono TV commercial that is kind of funny, its on my same RUclips channel where you seen this video - ruclips.net/video/fqAALGjwSrU/видео.html
R.I.P. Interesting to note he was a 3x All American collegiate wrestler as well as a 2x All American football player. He was over 400 lbs. then and I've wondered how much of a part his success due to his enormity influenced them setting weight limits in wrestling from there on out. I've tried to research it but I can't seem to find much.
Although Sumo is very hard and tough I do wonder how being so obese really helps other than making someone so heavy and supposedly unbeatable?... How long is the life expectancy of being a very obese top Sumo wrestler?
9:13 i dont want to loose too much respect for this sport i love. So can anyone name that sumo who smacked that kid in the face so i know who to point my distain at?

I'm just north of Denver, Colorado. I watch Grand Sumo highlights on NHK World.
Does nhk world take down the videos? I was looking and couldn't find the highlights from the past.
Aloha from Hawaii Sweden - we are glad you stopped by to see the video - Hawaiians were the first non-Japanese to become Grand Sumo Tori - Look up "Akebono" otherwise known as Chad Rowen

Thanks a million for the upload!
This is an outstanding doc. Looks like it was shot on film, nice cinematography
Mahalo nui for the video!
That Konishiki made some junkass music back in the days, good Lord
great documentary! I don't know much about sumo, but always enjoy it when I happen to come across it. though this international sumo is not for me, keep it old school!
"Akebono" looks like "The real E. Honda" in the video games, he looks to his opponents eyes fearless!
I think chiyonofuji looks more like e honda, e honda may have even be based off on him
@@benedictyeong746Honda was definitely based on Chiyonofuji.
Viewing from Pittsburgh, PA. Thanks for uploading! Couldn't stop watching...
Cool video I know...I once met Chad over on Oahu - HUGE! - Hang in there PA it's gonna be a cold one this year!
Boda - KFH
Excellent and informative video. Thanks.
Good upload thanks for sharing!
Amazingly well done documentary 👏 👍 Sumo is the best most fascinating discipline in the history of human kind

In New York. Have seen live and exhibition sumo many, many times. Still enjoyed this video immensely. Thank you.
Mahalo Nui for watching and leaving a nice comment - These men were always fascinating to me - I looked forward to Saturdays nights when Sumo from Japan would be on - Miss those days...Boda - KFH
This deserves at least 10 million views well done
I think I love sumo
charming and educatory vid. Great job. Thanks from Israel

Very good work, congratulations...
Dosukoi! from San Francisco! Great Doucumentary!!

The JAPONES are so respectful , love traditions , they hold onto the beauty of Japan . Yet they mimic and follow the western ways.

I want the kind of chill which wanye carries.
22:22 The guy with blue and white squared shirt got startled lol
I think that HAWAIIANS are genetically gifted sumo wrestlers they have low center of gravity. Great video.
Samoans as well. That's why so many of them end up in the NFL. They're 300 plus pound guys and fast too
When was this shot and produced? Just curious, I really enjoy watching this documentary and it encourages me to continue to press forward to progress my brand of sumo 😊🙏🏻.
2003, per the end credits
Chicago , nice video
19:15
That's Iz Kamakawiwo'ole singing.

how does a hawaiian from oahu start sumo? I wanna join so bad but I dont know where to start.
Start with judo. You should be able to find a halfway-decent school in Hawaii. I don't know about sumo, you'll be at a disadvantage to Japanese who have done sumo and judo from a young age, but many Mongolians and Hawaiian have found success in sumo

At 34:22 wtf was that?!? Did a drunk japanese spectator just attack a huge black dude?!? Pretty random. Lol
LOL! I guess you couls call it that, but ti me, it reminds me of when I went to see Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant wrestle, my seat was all the way up in the "Nose Bleed" area, I think we paid $6 for our tickets, right as those two came out, I was like F**K this!

who is that huge black guy from USA at 35min?
High Score EMANUEL “TINY” YARBROUGH - Google him, he's like 700 lbs
thanks

Hou mayjah, from oahu 😂
Sumo would be much cooler if it wasn’t so stuck in tradition. I’d rather it be on merit alone not who’s been around the longest.
34:21 WTF
38:53 lol white guy making racist jokes to a black guy. xD hilarious
Actually that is Wayne Vierra, he is Hawaiian not black and the other guy is local Hawaiian but has fair skin
Cant be bald and be Sumo, ouch.
Although Sumo is very hard and tough I do wonder how being so obese really helps other than making someone so heavy and supposedly unbeatable?... How long is the life expectancy of being a very obese top Sumo wrestler?
ちょっと音楽何とかしてほしい
Sumo elders must cringe when they see an event like the North American sumo tournament
cheeeeheeeeeeee
9:13 i dont want to loose too much respect for this sport i love. So can anyone name that sumo who smacked that kid in the face so i know who to point my distain at?
