- A tsunami advisory is in effect for the all coastal areas of the Bay Area as well as the entire West Coast. Evacuation orders are in place in the Berkeley Marina and officials in Santa Cruz County and other coastal areas are patrolling the area. This weathercaster fails to mention that a tsunami wave has a long back, so rather than just breaking & crashing, it continues to push forward until all of the wave's kinetic energy has dissipated, that's what makes a tsunami so damned dangerous. I lived in Santa Cruz for a number of years, and I know all of the really low-lying areas well. Capitola, Twin Lakes beach, Seacliff, Rio Del Mar, New Brighton Beach State Park, they'll all be in immediate danger, Capitola especially down into the village area, and the Soquel Creek mouth up through Riverview Ave. stand a really good chance of being flooded.

Highway 1 north out of Santa Cruz is in no danger at all as it's far above the level of the ocean. It would have to be a mega tsunami to reach Highway 1 in most areas. Yeah, there are some low-lying spots south of Carmel down towards Big Sur, but not close enough at this time to be affected. North of Santa Cruz you might see something at towns like Half Moon Bay, Bodega Bay, and Pacifica, but those are the only ones that I personally know to be either at or near sea level. But yes, you can be assured that some folks with a severe case of the "Stupids" are going to try & get close to the possible wave action & wind up really regretting it.

I was just looking at this on RUclips earlier today. It is amazing a volcano so far away can generate a threat to the West coast. This one has generated Tsunamis before and may continue to erupt with potential for other Tsunamis too. It was unclear earlier what caused this one, but the steam plume and ash cloud needs to clear first to get a visual. No matter, this one has real potential to cause much worse events.

This tsunami was caused by a flank collapse of the Honga Tonga volcano. Half of a cubic kilometer of earth slide down the side to create this. It was not from an uplift fault.

Photos I saw that local Tongans took showed the eruption was NOT undersea. You can say it was underwater because most of the bottom of the caldera had water in it. Shortly after the new volcanic island was formed around 2015, erosion on one side turned the caldera into a small bay. You should check photos of it from before the eruption.

I’m on the coast living. Nobody tells you what to do as far as evacuation if a tsunami actually hit.
In Oregon we have drills and signs that tell tourists where to go in the case this happens, our sirens are tested once a week, the state should have put that information out, look around there should be signs posted and information on your city web page
Not going to the beaches is one thing. But what about those with beachfront homes or Condos. Have they been told to evacuate ?

We were watching La Palma on the East coast, nothing big happened. Then we got to see this volcano could cause problems on the west coast.

This has been a long time for this to happen.
Tsunamis happen regularly, just not in human years. There is something called "geological time"--the timeline along which such events such as volcanoes etc. occur. In other words, saying something like this is some sort of "omen" of the gods is the same as a broken clock being right twice a day.
Meh California has been hit by tsunami's in the past. This one like a pebble hitting water compared to like the Alaskan Quakes that did do substantial tsunamis to the west coast.
