  • As you all know, things don't always go the way you want them to, but failure is still part of the process. So we want to show you that there can be setbacks when developing a rocket engine:
In mid-year, we conducted STAHR's IB-2 test campaign at DLR Lampoldshausen's M11 test stand. There we tested the installation of a so-called mixing disc, which increases the combustion efficiency and thus the thermal loads on the engine components. As a consequence, our graphite nozzle broke in six out of seven tests during this test campaign, which allowed us to take spectacular pictures.
In the first video, you can see a montage of all six Hotfire tests with broken nozzles. The second video shows a thermal video, which was taken by a drone, on which you can see a nozzle fly with more than 200 m/s through the area.
During this test campaign, we were able to learn a lot and we were already able to successfully test an improved nozzle design on the IB-3 campaign. Footage from this test campaign will also be posted in the near future, so stay tuned for more.
