Yep. No one queries Keith Richards, Neil Young , Springsteen or Paul McCartney for showing their age or for still stepping on to s stage as they are. Just listen to their music.
Patti is authentic. She is real. She lived a life of hardship mixed with glory & massively changing times. She remains steadfast, honest, & true. I can see, from some of the replies here, that a whole lot of people are dissatisfied with their lives. People who are happy in their own skins don't diss other people. Funny how that works. I
An amazing human being, who has complete awareness and truth, genuine attitude and all the qualities which Love entails. An admirable artist and human being, wish the world has more like her 🙏♥️♥️♥️♥️
Saw this song live at Glastonbury a few years ago. I thought the sky was going to open and we’d all float off to heaven. I cried. Straight to the bones.
@@morbidmanmusic The G chord you are thinking of, a Gmaj7, functions more as a Dsus4, with the 4th placed in the middle of the chord, with the open G string ringing out with the D in the bass.
No not a genius, something better. She somehow recognize her calling. Her purpose. After that it was a done deal, if you recognize your purpose, and have the balls to go after it you're automatically a genius.
This incredible woman ! I get so emotional every time I hear her sing. She's like a knife of truth that cuts through all the bull shit ! Her blunt, heart felt honesty bears no shame for being human, which is greatest power. She is herself true and threw and shares that rare twinkle of loving energy with us, which can be so deafening !
This woman is everything. I discovered her as a teenager in the mid 2000s and she changed my life ! I can imagine many others saying this for centuries to come 🙏
I cried to the core of my soul......I never cried or shed a single tear when my families died but I cried for this.....what a phenomenal singer she is.
This is so beautiful that I don't even think about what the words mean. It just washes over me and lands straight in my heart. Seth Meyers face says it all. I have always loved Patti, but as I get older, she moves me straight to tears.
I love the wide smile of Seth after her line of 'To be, not here. But Here!' Seeing someone hang to someone's lips like that and feel with them deeply, is very nice to see.
Patti Smith has a presence like no one - 100% genuine and pretenseless. That is where her charisma and sovereignty comes from. Everybody feels it. It is a veritable study in character, what makes it - and how does it affect others?
I sat at Patti's feet while she performed a few of her songs in Philadelphia a couple of years ago. I was just about as close to her as these people were, and let me say: it was every bit as amazing as you would imagine.
Amazing powerful performance for a tak show. I love Patti and Sam Shepard, too. Sam was not only a good writer but also a good actor; he was terrific along with Jessica Lange in Frances. A hardly known, but must see movie!
Forty years ago (in Vienna) I felt really 'cool' knowing about Patti Smith. Forty years later (today in Canada) I feel really warm , when I hear her talk & sing. Love her ! Thanks for sharing this link on your show, Skavlan !
@Karin Junker - you're Viennese? How is it there now? Vienna was the city I Chose to live in, haven't been back in 7 yrs - how're they holding up? Esp. 12. Bez./Meidling? 🎶🎵🌸❤️
Simple and pure. I wrote a song with two chords, and a musician wanted to add variations and complicated stuff. I kept it that way thinking maybe sometimes simple things can still hit your heart. Proof here.
Patti’s the missing member of the Velvet Underground! I can easily envisage John Cale backing her up on viola on this song, which bears some resemblance to the Velvets’ “Black Angel’s Death Song”.
Wow. I loved Patti back in "the day," and had heard the recorded version of this but it didn't communicate her skill and passion and art. P.s. that's a cool look, the multiple pigtails! Uhhhhh, "thank you for your service, Patti (haha!)" - US infantry vet
Few songwriters can pull off a miracle like Beneath the Southern Cross with 2 effing chords. Lou Reed, Dylan and Springsteen come to mind. She’s right there with them, among our best songwriters, poets with a guitars.
I don't know about the female guest, but Seth was fully appreciating Patti's performance. His face is very expressive. She's not for everybody, but I loved it.
Where are all these great artists and people? Why do we not hear from them more often instead of these nitwit Hollywood actors who have nothing to say about anything?
we must rise up. we haven't as a large collective since the '60's into 70's. the occupy mvmnt of '11 had a touch of that energy, and maybe some of the bernie people a bit, but nothing like the huge wave of about 45 - 65 yrs ago. let's build it up.
Just saw a friend's FB post, reminding me that a very dear mutual friend died one year ago today. I got on RUclips to send her a link to a song but found the RUclips god's already had one mind. Imagine my surprise when the first words out of Patti's mouth told of her then-recent loss of a dear friend and dedication of this song to him. She sang it for Sam, but I'm sending it out to Scotty: we miss you dearly, brother.....who are not here but here.
No makeup, no plastic surgery, perhaps the only female rock/pop musician, like that. Totally committed to self expression and self determination.
I adore her. Seen her perform 4 times and have 5 of her books.
Right, and she looks human, not ridiculous and artificial.
And Joni of course
Yep. No one queries Keith Richards, Neil Young , Springsteen or Paul McCartney for showing their age or for still stepping on to s stage as they are. Just listen to their music.
No haur removal, no anti-aging products, no bullshit, nothing but LOVE THUTH JOY ART.
Everyone around her is in awe, and I don't blame them. Patti is a true artist.
Speechless
Seriously, can you imagine Patti singing mere inches-not even feet-away from you? I'd prolly pass out.
Brilliant woman.
Yes. It was wonderful to see them too. She is so present, in each moment, and they each became utterly absorbed in the moment listening to her.
The greatest female orator and songwriter of our times. Still prepared to walk the tightrope and make a stand for humanity today..

Beautiful moment. I cried watching this just now. Patti has moved me to tears on several occasions.
@spinny2010 - thank you for that, happens to me very often
Her voice is still so damn powerful and unwavering, love her.
When I'm sick in body or spirit Patti raises me up, she pulls me up by the spine, her words shake me to the bone, her soul calls me to fly.
Yes, for me the same, it's Patti and Neil.
Beautifully put.

Perfect pandemic music, provokes thought & depth .. All shallow people need not watch...
Patti Smith is such a beautiful lady.
Her humility and respectful nature and intelligence just simply shines.
God Bless you Patti xx
1 chord, a great lyric, a powerful vocal and just presence.
A true artist
2 chords. D and g
@@morbidmanmusic that's another way of interpreting it. Stil amazing

Amazing, she's never lost it. The never duplicated, Patti Smith.

Imagine sitting in a chair that close to her while she plays that brilliant song... "Amazed to stumble where gods get lost."
I love how everyone around her is so engaged with her, one of my favorite songs I've had the privilege of hearing live on multiple occasions
Love this song
Nobody is like her and that’s what I admire the most about Patti - she keeps it real
I love Seth expression 1:20: I think all of the viewers have the same....
Awesome artist and human being. Thank you Patti Smith, we love you.
Outstanding! I have been in love with Patti Smith's work for 40 years. She is a force
Seth Meyers facial expression this entire segment is exactly what I’d be like in her presence.
This is an artist. She’s wonderful.

That brought tears to my eyes, particularly as it was dedicated to Sam. Their friendship lasted a life time.
I cried to the core of my soul......I never cried or shed a single tear when my families died but I cried for this.....what a phenomenal singer she is.

What an amazing soul Patti Smith is. Love her.
My goodness. What a vocal personality,, much respect, and love to Patti Smith!
Why is her voice so young
Absolutely!!! She sounds the same as when I first heard her at CBGB'S...
'cuz the Heart is YOUNG
Cause she's a Capricorn & we age in reverse ;)

How can one not love her?
Damn, he is just transfixed! :-)
He’s also sitting two feet away from a 70’s rock legend.
You and Robert Mapplethorpe are a huge inspiration to me and to my art... Thank you so much, Patti Smith 🙏
brilliant and beautiful
She looks amazing. I love her look so full of character and that long silver gray hair.
a poet first then a true spirit of song
Mind blowing.

i watched that movie a million times and read the book 💜
Art. Artist.
Don’t mind me, being from a different it’s only today that I to discover Patti Smith. All the previous comments her spoke my mind!
She's beautiful! Love her and the era.

Utterly enthralling a lady, an artist, a human being!
I love her dearly. A more breathtakingly humble and honest person does not exist.
Patty Smith is as beautiful as anyone on this planet!!!😍🤩😎
what a beautiful spirit she is.
THE GREATEST.

power of the soul with only two chords and great voice talented woman
🙏Make music and poetry not War! 💪
Here’s a person completely on her path as herself. How many of us can claim that.
There is no more beautiful soul than Patti Smith's. #respect 🙌🏼 💯 🎩
this woman is inspiring , structured strong and yet so light .

what gorgeous recording- thank you!
She's unique. A big wow! I just rediscovered her recently after she has been away from the public eye so many years.
Seth looks so happy
Well done Patti, brilliant as always.

superb.got abit of a lou reed feel to it.
Her guitar playing (one chord) gives more emotions of a lot of complex solos
She seems like a sweet person and humble.
Just bummed and amazed that there's no full length tubes of her 2000 shows. "One Voice" live is only a memory.
what a very charming person
i have goose bumps
Oh man that voice. Wow it just fills ya.
