I have the even warmer (and heavier) Downmat XP 9 LW. I’m well pleased with it and didn’t know they had a lighter (and less insulated but just as thick) mat. So thank you, it’s an idea but I’ll probably go for a summer mat next.
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Yeah. I first of all needed a thick mat as I guess I have rather curved back and get back problems if I can’t stick my butt far down into the mattress. And thought “why not go the length while I’m at it”. It’s the shell that makes these mats heavy, not really the insulation. It’s useful as even with that, I can get a cold butt if I can’t find (or make) a depression in the terrain there in the middle. So I’m looking at an even thicker mattress for summer. Warm mattresses are also really good for quilts, as it’s insulation that’s not pressed together.
Yep. Like mine too when tenting in cold weather. A heavier option, but I'll take the ounces to stay comfortable when needed. It will also work for the Amok..lol.
I just pulled the trigger on one of these. Im a side sleeper and Ive gotton sore hips and legs from my previous pad and got cold sleeping on top of snow. I hope this pad is everything I HOPE it will be. Super excited to get this pad as a replacement for my hunting trips mid to late season in the Mtns between Sept and Nov.
Looks like a pad that’s right up my alley. I’m always on the search for more comfort :-) I could probably squeeze that into my double layer ridge runner. I need that level of warmth in that Puppy
I also sleep in a double layer ridge runner. Even on mild nights I can sometimes get cold in the hammock. Especially if it's windy at all. I'm definitely going to look into this
Just purchased the Exped Dura R8 Long Sleeping Mat (£216) and looking forward to using it. I'm a side sleeper and the exped ticks all the boxes. Thankyou for the video
I know you prefer the Exped, and I agree it’s a great pad, just heavy. I prefer my hammock like you, however for the same reasons bought the XTherm long/wide pad. The newer ones which I have, I feel they have minimized the crunching sound. And like you I’m a side sleeper and I toss and turn. It took me several times to get used to the pad and find the sweet spot. I can honestly say that I sleep very well on it now. I haven’t found my feet falling off the end either. At 20oz and a 6.9 R-value I’m very impressed with this pad. We all know there is a specific pad out there for everyone. Just wanted to leave a comment as well. Great video. Keep em coming..
I appreciate that. I will have to check out the new ones and see how it stacks up. Less loud than before and quite a bit lighter than this one would be welcome!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 truthfully I was worried about the sound. I have camped in shelters with other people inside, and none of them mentioned the sound at all. So I figure it must be quieter. Borrow mine and see what you think. I promise mine isn’t funktified yet lol
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 I think the exped is tougher or looks at least tougher than the XTherms. That is something of importance for me. I could be wrong.
I currently use the XTherm on winter trips. The wife is kind enough to let me borrow it. But this does seem like a great pad option if I purchased one just for me.
For once my procrastination paid off! I've planned to replace my R-4 Big Agnes for that R-7 Therm-a-rest. Wasn't looking forward to the narrower and thinner noisey pad but needed the R value. I'm going to look into this option. Thanks!
This is a good pad, but I'd suggest looking into the Sea to Summit Ether Light XT Insulated Wide version. It is amazing, you basically get all the comfort of the Exped but for ~11 oz. less. I use that for everything but sub-zero temps then I'll shift to the Thermarest Xtherm MAX wide version.
Great review, watched both of yours! Moosejaw has it at 8 R-Value, maybe a newer version? Could you tell me the dimensions of the LW version you have when it's in the stuff sack? Thanks!
I don't usually keep it in the stuff sack, I actually roll it and put it in the inflation bag, that way I'm not carrying an extra piece of gear. It's about 14-15 inches wide and about 6 inches in diameter, but I'm not trying to compress it to the max I can.
The EXPED is a billion times better than the LOUD, UNCOMFORTABLE Sea to Summit Ether Light Insulated. Cofort rules over a couple ounces of loud and uncomfortable. I live in Alaska and camp with no heat source other than my body in clothing down to -30 F actual. Lowest-78F WCF - I wore an expedition suit in my sleeping bag.

But when you either don't sleep or carry something like this, it makes the decision pretty easy!
I rarely tent also but sometimes its the only option. This thing is sweet!!
Thanks!

Not cheap and not light, but warm and comfy, really the most important thing when talking about sleep gear!
@@SpiguyverBackpacking1 Agreed, I have no problem carrying more weight if it means more comfort at camp. I am not a high mileage hiker.
I get my Downmat 7 UL into the RR no problem...

Sweet! Let me know how it works out for you! I used this one out in the UK several months back, still amazed at how comfortable this one is for me.
it is awesome... throughout a wide spectrum of temperatures, plus very durable.... my go-to favorite.

Thanks Rob, maybe the next trip we plan a shelter to shelter on the OT and test out some pads!
Sounds like a great idea.

LOL, I get it!
If I would not have gone to a hammock I probably would have gone to the Nemo Tensor in the wider version. Currently have the X-lite and klymit V
That's a popular pad for sure. Thanks!
Which dura R is that one. I have the Exped Dura 8R. I sleep right on snow. Always comfortable, never cold.

Aren’t those roughly half the R value?
Wich pad is warmer? Xtherm or this one? Thanks for a nice review
R value of Xtherm is 6.9, the Exped is 7.1. So the Exped is warmer, thicker and more comfortable!

Awesome!
Your thoughts on Nemo dagger 2 tents?
I have no experience with them, sorry.
Do you still have this pad, if so how is it holding up?
While it’s a heavier sleeping pad it will get you through nearly every winter condition.
Very true!
Hello, I have a question, will it fit into the scout hammock from exped ??
Not sure>>
pls check the Exped Dura 8R
I'll check it out.
2lbs+ for a mat? Nope.
Give yourself 30 years, you'll be reassessing the weight versus comfort (read as less pain). BTW I enjoy your channel too.
I get it, that's a lot. But for me 2 lbs vs not sleeping is an easy choice!

There are a few out there that are way too loud for me. Man, that is a seriously low low!
