I have both a medium version AL13 and the aggressive version Titanium model. I love them both. Of my 40 razors, I use the Henson 95% of the time. The aggressive Titanium model provides nearly the same shave as some very expensive artisan DE non-adjustable razors. Henson's target market is cartridge and disposable users, and they have a razor that is idiot proof and blood proof. I believe they have achieved their goal. It only takes a couple of shaves to become proficient with it, unlike the DE89, Merkur 34C, etc...which takes a longer time commitment and will result in some cuts and blood. I am impressed with the tight aerospace tolerances and the head design. Henson is a mild razor and will keep new wet shavers in the game, which is what we all want.

@@jkatkat7950 It is my understanding that over 90% of Henson razors sold are mild. I think it may even be in the mid-90’s. Hopefully you ordered the Mild version.

As everyone points out, this razor is great for new DE shavers. However, this razor is also great for experienced shavers. I am a daily shaver, and head shaver with pretty sensitive skin. This razor is simply perfect for daily shaving, especially head shaves. Also, do not let the lack of blade feel fool you, this razor is efficient. The new improved edition of this razor is even better. Overall, this is my favorite and most used razor. I have all three levels in the new edition and I use the mild most. All three have very little to no blade feel. I can shave fast and blind with this razor and it won't cut you.

I’m not sure what to get. I have sensitive skin on my neck and keep getting burns from cartridge razors but I like to be able to feel the shave at the same time. Do you think a medium would still be alright?

@@1122seanc I have all three versions and like all. However, I use the mild more than the others since I am a daily shaver. I also shave my head, so the mild suits me best. Also, the mild will take down plenty of growth as well. If I had to choose, i'd stick with the mild.

I just got a Henson. I am five shaves in.
I am primarily a heathen using an electric Panasonic for my daily shave.
For many years now dumping the blade at 50.
With retirement coming soon I stumbled on to the Henson.
And with a long past of multi blade mutilations I went in chin first.
It will be my Saturday / Sunday treat to have a real shave. A friend gifted me a straight razor shave years ago in Portland.
Loved it. And I miss the primal, nuance of the blade. So me and my army green Henson are very happy.
I Am a big fan. My beard even at 63 is soft and skin sensitive - so this a great tool.
No way to nick yourself. The Henson has yet to draw blood. And I wield aggressively.
Your finding that it holds goop - is correct. Opening the stem while rinsing clears it well.
I am using an aloe lotion & coconut diy shave prep. Misting with a spray bottle to stay damp.
Haven't you ever wanted to spend a day staying damp? No, me neither. But it works for the shave!
Send me the tee - I doubt you have a large tall. So large will do. Death 2 BIC.

I have a medium Henson and really enjoy using it. It is a great head shaver for those new to head shaving as it is really easy to find the angle. I too prefer a more aggressive razor, but occasionally it is nice to use something milder such as when you have used a razor/blade combo that has left you with irritation.

I am enjoying mine (5 shaves so far). I need to do a second pass against the grain to get a close shave, which I don't have to with the Rex or the Fatip. However, here is the key part: the AS splash doesn't burn at all, which does not happen with any other razor I've used. Definitely a keeper and my new daily driver. My skin feels great

I am using the Henson mild razor in purple and absolutely love it. I have the worst combination of sensitive skin and tough beard and have tried, Gillette Sensor Excel, Edwin Jagger DE razor and even the Supply single edge razor. I got razor burn and bumps and nicks and even itching from all of the m EXCEPT the Henson. Best shave ever had. It solves all the problems presented by other DE razors, namely that the angling of the blade causes problems for the moustache area.....but NOT for the Henson. I highly recommend this razor

I own over a dozen DE Razors, that includes the Rockwell S , Merkur Vision , Merkur Future, Merkur Slant, Merkur Progress, Edwin Jagger De 89 , Gillette Fat Boy, and the list goes on…none give as smooth of a shave for me , with just about any blade as does the Henson Razor with the medium head. It is,in my opinion in a league of its own and is now the razor I reach for most often. Kudos to Henson for taking the DE Razor into the space age with their CNC machining. Cheers MikeR.

I shave like any expert, and the Henson is mild and smooth. Wanting aggressive feel, to each their own, is a bit Bonkers to me, for me it's all about efficiency and not hurting the skin. But what they have accomplished at the price point manufacturing location and everything is amazing this should be part of everyone's rotation hands down. Unless we're keen on funding warring Nations across the globe why don't we try some of these North American made beauties.

I have the Henson you used in blue. My take was similar to yours, but I might be rethinking that. Two pass shave with 3 day’s growth gave me a BBS shave. No irritation detected when I finished with an alum block. Some clogging but rinsed cleared it easily. I have a problem with lather building on the blade like you did, but that is true with multiple razors when I face lather with Proraso. Bowl lathering reduces or eliminates for me. I didn’t experience any lather build up with the Henson by bowl lathering. I’m the third day out from my shave and the stubble is just beginning to show. I seems as though I got a closer shave than my first impression led me to believe. I’m pleasantly surprised by this razor

I own the Henson AL13 Mild in Black. Absolutely love it. I have sensitive skin and I am new to wet shaving so it's perfect for me. Really experienced shavers or those with a thicker more coarse beard may want to try their titanium version which is a step above the medium aggression. They are really catering to people making the transition into wet shaving and I think they have hit the ball out of the park. The learning curve on this razor if you're used to a cartridge razor is almost zero. Is it a razor with training wheels? Perhaps. After 3 passes I get a BBS shave with no skin irritation. Marvelous.

I don't think the lather holes were inadequate, I think it's just because you loaded up on Proraso Pre-Shave AND the shaving cream. Both of them together creates an extra-thick paste. Most razors would have trouble clearing that out. To really test it though, try it with some Barbasol and see how it does.

I have the mild version of the Henson in Green. Love it for my use. I use a more aggressive Vikings Blade Crusader or Slightly more aggressive Vikings Blade Godfather for my face and neck. But the Henson is the blade I always reach for when I go to shave my head! I shave my head maybe 3 times a week and have never nicked myself or gotten an ingrown head hair from the Henson! Though for face shaving I find the mild version just doesn't cut how I want. Maybe go with the medium for the face but I've heard the medium is also very mild.

Hello, I just got a new blue Henson razor a little over a week ago and have shaved with this razor eight days in a row with the same blade. I have a medium beard but a little on the course side. When I shaved with it the cream came out of the four holes on the bottom of the razor just fine as designed. I used the supply shaving cream with a nice lather and it worked great for me, I even tried shaving my whole face without rinsing and for the most part my shave was very good. I purchased the medium exposure version, I love it so far! Thanks for your reviews and shaving information. This thing is built to last!

The lather didn't come out of the holes for him because he loaded up on both Proraso pre-shave AND the cream. Both of those together creates an extra-thick paste, so in this case I don't think it's the razor's fault. Any razor would have trouble clearing that out.

Seems like most people are in agreement with their experience, subjective as it is, that's a plus for Henson. But, being that shaving is such a personal thing with so many variables involved, the only way to find that consistent, smooth, easy, efficient shave is to "try" everything...there in lies the rub. I have the Henson AL13 (mild so just + not ++ on the guard). Got it a little over two weeks ago. It is my first DE safety razor. I find it much better than the Gillette Fusion cartridges I moved from, but certainly not flawless or foolproof. I've definitely nicked myself and gotten in-grown hairs using it which is annoying, but I did that before I knew about grain mapping (which is a massive improvement for me) and cold shaving (also a massive improvement). I'm curious if the RK DE blades they now ship with it are part of my problem. That said I've had no weepers and no irritation unless I'm overdoing it chasing BBS. If I stick to single pass and cold water shaving I get a very good shave and zero irritation. That BBS tho, I keep chasing it...

If the blade head has one "+" it is mild, two "+" is medium. According to Henson support, the titanium has three "+"
This is a great razor for people wanting to try out DE shaving. It has a cartridge like feel to the shave. This will be the razor I take whenI go traveling.

Thanks for your honest review, saved me some money as I was attracted by the design. Personally I am using a Parker Variant and since some weeks a Kame GT KMS95. It is a mild and reasonable efficient razor. I like the slim design, helps under the nose. Also the stainless steel handle has a good heft and the coated head slides effortless. Good finish as well. The feedback is a bit less then the Parker but still good. Kame is an Asian brand, but I could not find where it is actually manufactured. I guess Thailand as it is sold there and also used as the "shaver of the monks". Price is around 60 US$, fair for what you get. Maybe you can get hold of a copy and test it.

You can loosen the handle on the Henson and make it considerably more aggressive. It will give a BBS once you get it dialed in.

This was my first DE razor after using Harry’s for years. Love it and got it after seeing a video on Henson and since they are made in Ontario Canada where I live thought I would try one. And I love it. But I was so new to DE saving I did not know they had mild and medium and aggressive. So I have the mild in black and it was a good start for me for sure. Have then Henson aggressive on order and looking forward to trying it. Just the aluminum not the titanium. Keep up the great videos. 🇨🇦

The Henson likes a lighter shaving cream. It glides better, cuts closer and will not clog when the lather is very well hydrated. I am going on about 6 months with my + AL13 and am relatively new to wet shaving. The Henson is my go to. I also have a Merkur travel razor, a Parker Variant, a vintage Gillette (20’s), a King C Gillette, and a nos military surplus razor of some sort. I am intending to try the Henson ++, but I am not in a hurry since I have any number of razors that I need to learn first. I have had some very difficult shaves with all of the razors except the Henson. Thanks for the review.

Your comments neither inspired or offended me. They were completely neutral to my way of thinking. I have heard of and visited Henson's website before. I simply want a BLUE colored razor. It seems every time I a particular blue hued razor came along I missed out for one reason or another and Henson has a blue razor. I don't care about so called aggressiveness or mildness. I just want a blue razor.

I’ve tried and own the Mild and Medium Aluminum razors. The Mild is too mild for me even though I’m usually a fan of mild razors. The Medium is beautifully made and in Black with Red baseplate is especially beautiful to me. I like the handle and use it with other RazoRock aluminum razors. It’s a good razor for me but not one of my favorites for shave efficiency or comfort. I’ve not tried the Titanium version or aggressive plate.

Matt, I appreciate the review....I ordered this razor and used it, but did not like. As you pointed out, too mild for me and caused irritation after multiple strokes in the same area trying to get my desired results.
Also noticed the lather output through the slots was not efficient as well and I was having to constantly run the razor under the water for clearance, (much like my Feather WS-D2S)...Very nice razor to look at, but just not for me.

Hi Matt- Great shave and razor review; thank you! I appreciate hearing your thoughts about this razor. I have a few aluminum razors and the issue of applying too much pressure is the problem I have when using them. So very different to use than stainless steel
razors. I hope you have a great weekend ahead. Take good care and be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, Matt.

Interesting… I don’t think I’ll be ordering this. I really like how you addressed the buildup of lather. In comparison to the Rex ambassador, I prefer the way leather accumulates below the base plate on your house brand adjustable. A build up inside of the guard seems counterintuitive.

I am just now hearing about de razors and have been trying to decide what mild razor I should try first. Anyway I found it funny how you call a $70 razor a budget razor. I know there are plenty higher priced razors but every other razor on your beginner razor lists is at least $20 cheaper. And so many options out there at half the price I would hardly call it a budget razor. I really wanted it to be my first razor but couldn't pull the trigger with the higher price. Maybe it will be my second if I end up liking the shave.

The curve of the blade provides enough friction that allows you to loosen the head slightly to increase the blade gap, making the razor more efficient (not officially recommended, I'm sure). Similar to the PAA Ascension.
I purchased a couple Henson razors at $40, and they are a great value at that price. But I think there are much better razors for $70.

I have a hard to remote beard. I have used all kind of Gillete razors with generally good results but I find that sometimes the quality of the blade is not the same always depending on where it is made (Brazil, USA, etc) which somehow changed my view on the product. I am now using both Gillette Skinguard Sensitive and Harry's. The former is quite gentle but it is rather mild and the feeling of a total removal of beard is not complete though the latter is quite a fine blade but still I have to repeat some áreas to achieve a "baby face" result. In regard to Henson the exhibit you give is very fair to the brand and also the message to the prospectiva consumer is honest. As a person of my age (I am not a beginner) so for the moment I am going to keep to my routine.

I have had great results with my medium. The aggressive is next. Just to see if it steps up the same results. My skin can not tolerate an aggressive razor. I have many. Some really good razors. The efficiency has to be there but a neutral blade exposure is required, or close to that. The aggressive has very little exposure and a smaller blade gap. I know the Yates Razor has that as well in their milder razors. Winning razor comes to mind. I have the T2ss Rockwell and the 6S they both shave well but a little aggressive for my skin. 6S is efficient but when I get to the efficient plates I cut myself. I use to think that it was technique but as long as I have been shaving with a DE I don't think so. Please, suggestions are requested by anyone.
