Wow amazing how they researched about it just to make a small scene in a cartoon that was intended to be just silly
Suddenly, and without warning, the words "Hark! The Dover boys." floated out from a smoke clouded pool table in the deep recesses of my conciousness. I cannot believe I still remembered the exact wording and scene that line was from in a cartoon I may have only watched a handful of times nearly two decades ago.
+Ucro Havoc That's probably the result of them sinking huge amounts of money and time into these old WB cartoons. A majority of the cartoons being made these days are meant to be aired on television under a much shorter deadline and tighter budget, for the most part.
+derpsire53 The Paramount/Max Fleischer SUPERMAN series was much the same way. Each episode cost somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 to 75 large, if not more. Theatrical animation at all the big studios did not come cheap.
The reason for that is that cartoons today are part of a scheduled program and are constantly pressed for time on their episodes. Early looney tunes were just recreational animation projects made just for fun.
Sapphire Crook Can you believe Chuck Jones got fired for this cartoon? It wasn't offensive or rude or anything, just different. Fortunately, the firing didn't take, so he continued working at Warner Bros until he actually was fired for moonlighting on this animated cat movie called "Gay Purr-ee". Of course, by then, animated theatrical shorts were waning in popularity due to television.
it may be a mixture of it being 4am and how badly the internet has warped my sense of humor, but this is hilarious. Or perhaps Chuck knew exactly what he was doing.
Not the short itself, but the way that it was written. Chuck Jones directed this short intending to annoy the executives at Warner Bros. He didn't like using human protagonists in his shorts.
A lot has been written about Chuck's use of highly stylized, limited animation on this groundbreaking cartoon, but nothing has been said concerning WHY he did it like this. This is my guess: Chuck wanted to emulate a silent movie being projected at the wrong speed. Allow me to elaborate. Silent film speed is 16 frames per second, sound speed is 24. After the advent of sound, if you wanted to see a silent movie (in a revival house or on TV), you'd see it at 24 fps, making the characters skitter around all herky-jerky, EXACTLY AS THEY ARE IN THIS CARTOON. Only since the '60's was anything done to correct this problem. Add to this the corny, melodramatic storyline, a favorite of early silents like 'The Perils of Pauline', and you have a recipe for satire, both visual and verbal. In closing, I think that on a day in 1942, Chuck Jones said, "A cartoon! I'll stylize it!! AND NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!!!!
I've always liked his limited animation style. It's only recently I've begun to appreciate the work more. The character behind the animation style just fits along with the story going on so well(say in Dover Boys). I couldn't imagine (nor would i want to watch) a fully animated Dover Boys. Just wouldnt be as funny.
I always thought the reason why he animated the short the way he did was to basically take the piss out of the Hardy Boys. You would expect the boys to have personality besides "being the good guys." You would expect the actions to be more fluid. He's making fun of how stock they are - and what better way to communicate the blandness of young adult novels than to deliberately half-ass a cartoon?
Limited animation became a necessity when TV came along due to the speed at which programs had to be made for very little money. Chuck Jones himself even said something like that... Or maybe it was Mel Blanc. Well, either way it's true.
+cafeterialoca The creator made it to piss off his employers who threatened to fire him for making so many cartoons about talking animals. basically this is him making the most bitter cartoon he could to tell them to f off and let him continue to be a furry
You know how we always make fun of the trends and culture our parents grew up with in the 70s? Well in the 40s they always made fun of the trends and culture their parents grew up with in the Edwardian era.
This 'toon was obviously made as a middle finger to Jones's bosses at WB. They were squeezing him on help b/c of the War, were trying to get everything done on the cheap, and had even criticized him for being in a rut creatively, so he came up with this crap. It was supposed to demonstrate a technically new, less labor-intensive animation technique, but failed utterly because of the low quality it displayed in storyboarding, in its (pun-laden) writing, characterization, and in other departments. Mel Blanc was certainly Jones's co-conspirator -- you can tell by his inappropriately loud and overacted dialogue performance, never repeated elsewhere, over which he had total control per contract, such that he could have had it re-written and/or re-recorded if he'd wanted to. The whole piece was "inspired" by a sappy and now long-forgotten kid's book series from the turn of the last century called The Rover Boys; half-forgotten even in 1942, it had no chance to resonate with a mass audience -- and predictably didn't. Jones basically threw away the entire budget he'd been given to work with, and was rightly almost canned for the insubordination and lack of professionalism he displayed. Likely the only reason Jack Warner didn't fire him outright was fear of the competitive consequences if Jones went somewhere else.
Yeah it seems like animation goes horrible every few years. 30s just okay, 40s great, 50s, good, 60s kinda cheap, 70s worst, 80s kinda okay, 90s okayer, 00s better, 10s good i guess
+Pineapple Time I thought it was a gag at Don Backslide's homosexuality. He tries to hid his attraction to men by covering it up with an assumed attraction to Mary, by which he also gains her father's money.
+ripplecutter Vegeta: Confound those z-fighters! Oh how I hate them! I hate Krillin! I hate Gohan! And I hate Kakarot! They drive me to kill! (I tried lol 😃)
...I think I just found something so funny that I can't laugh at it. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen and yet I can't laugh at it. It's too beautiful.
"Telegram for the Dover Boys! Messirs Tom, Dick and Larry, care of Wayward Tavern, Upper Bottleneck, New York says quote, *'HEEELLLPPP!!'* Unquote. Signed, Dora. Thirty-five cents collect."
Little known fact: The Dover Boys and the girl have superpowers: The blonde one can alter gravity (look at his bike). The short one has telekinesis (can pedal with his thoughts). The ginger can break the 4th wall. The girl has super-strength. The sailor can stop time.
Not even gonna lie. This is one of the funniest old cartoons out there. Like normally I don't think old cartoons are anything more than cute but this one actually got me.
I swear to tits I've watched this cartoon so many times and it has never gotten old. Such a masterpiece, from start to finish. Everything about it, the animation, the pure absurdity of its plot, characters, and humour, and even the voice acting. I would go as far to say that Dan Backslide is the best one-off character that Mel Blanc has ever done.
Tonight on Marvel's Agent Carter, they had a scene showing an old B&W film reel. It was THIS film, which was made within the same time frame but before the events of Carter. The part we saw is around the 5:50 mark. I remember seeing this on an old VHS that had a collection of old WB cartoons YEARS ago.
+Wunkolo Even as a fan of YTP, I can genuinely say that there is no possibly way this cartoon could be improved. It is already a masterpiece of comedy.
"I'll steal it! No one will ever know!!" he yelled. Loudly. Right outside of a bar with only a swinging door to block his voice.

+Rankerquat The first otome.
Or maybe her suitors?
I'm so glad this is a meme now, because I've always thought it was hilarious
Yeah, it was when Chuck Jones finally found his groove as a director and has one the earlist uses of smears.
This was made in the 40s? I'm surprised. This animation is quite high-quality compared to that of most other studios around this time.
W B is lake an animation god
Are you confusing the 40s with the 70s?
Yeah it seems like animation goes horrible every few years. 30s just okay, 40s great, 50s, good, 60s kinda cheap, 70s worst, 80s kinda okay, 90s okayer, 00s better, 10s good i guess
***** Which ones were those?
Jimi LaPointe 30s animation was actually really great if you watch some Fleischer studios cartoons

Mister Skeltal this was awesome!
I can't believe this middle finger from Chuck Jones to WB has become a Tumblr meme...
+LaDracul and there's a gay joke in it when the villain hangs the girl's face over a body builder's face.
+Michael Pfeiffer OMG...
Question out of curiosity, why was this a "middle finger to WB"?
+CH Gorog The studio wanted Chuck to make more 'normal' cartoons, so this was his response to spite them.
LaDracul j
Ironic considering PU is the worst tier.

3:15 is foreshadowing to how strong Dora is
+Pineapple Time
Dora la Luchadora
+Pineapple Time I thought it was a gag at Don Backslide's homosexuality. He tries to hid his attraction to men by covering it up with an assumed attraction to Mary, by which he also gains her father's money.
Mad Hatter Dan Backslide: “I Hate Dick!”
When you think about this, this is oddly progressive for the times considering that she really didn't need any saving at all.

It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen and yet I can't laugh at it.
It's too beautiful.
This is essentially the Looney Tunes version of a dril tweet.
The fucking sound that car makes kills me.
+Jessica Marrs It's like someone rapidly squeaking a fucking dog toy
This is one of the strangest cartoons I've ever seen.
That why it so good
I would say it's brilliant and unconventional and funny as hell even for adult viewers.
I love this original and the reanimated version

Fun fact: Chuck Jones almost got fired for pulling that shit. One of the funniest cartoons he ever made, IMO.
"HOW I LOVE HERRR...father's money."
Such glorious animation smears.
+Alyssumi because honestly fuck inbetweens
You can tell how hastily it was made
Yeah, that too
+Alyssumi nice profile pic AVA
Little known fact: The Dover Boys and the girl have superpowers:
The blonde one can alter gravity (look at his bike).
The short one has telekinesis (can pedal with his thoughts).
The ginger can break the 4th wall.
The girl has super-strength.
The sailor can stop time.
+donbasuradenuevo Dan Backslide: Can make a "HARK" out of smoke.
+FAH Holliday He can also appear in cartoons smoking AND drinking
muskatDR
Remember when it was really cool to have punches and purple eyes in kid's cartoons?
The sailor is DIO

The legendary Mel Blanc. This is such a great short.
Dora Standpipe with the dab back in ole '42 with those P.U. alums? Love it!
Where would WB cartoons be without the William Tell Overture?
No one will ever know.....
I'm surprised how much of this I remember considering it must have been over 20 years since I last saw it
Not even gonna lie.
LMAO! You had to see it too?
One of Chuck Jones' most brilliant early cartoons. :)
5:29 Dan Backslide may be a villain, but he is environment concerned villain.
Also, am I the only one who believes Dora was actually a robot?
Nearly a century later and it STILL holds up to this day. That's the sign of a fantastic cartoon!
The cartoon is almost 80 years old, and it's still amazingly hilarious!
This cartoon is in public domain now guys you can ytp this as liberally as you want
+Wunkolo BASED WUNKOLO HAS SPOKEN. FOLLOW HIS GUIDANCE FOR INFINITE COOKIES AND PROTECTION AGAINST ANON HATE

6:30 Dora, Dora, sweetheart, I'm pretty sure you don't actually need help.
