I just discovered memes of this episode a day or so ago, and your vid shed a lot of light on history of this timeless cartoon! Great video! Confound those Dover Boys indeed!
I swear there are other instances of that gag with the guy in the bathing suit walking like that, but they were like birds or something... not much to go on
Might be thinking of the mynah bird, a recurring character on the old "Inki" cartoons. Warner Bros. pulled those *ages* ago, because they were just a straight-up "African savage" stereotype. But the bird, and its associated music (from Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture), is the main thing about them that people remember.
...the opening music was the alma mater of Cornell Univeristy, followed by that old chestnut, Genevieve, Sweet Genevieve. And it's disreputable, not unreputable.
Public Domain VHS's had many problem where they accidently include copyrighted cartoons like "Crowing Pains" "Fin N' Catty" "The Unruly Hare" "An Itch in Time" and "Hollywood Steps Out" and there is so much wrong with these tapes I will suggest you to see the video "The Life and Times of Public Domain VHS" Part 1 and Part 2 they tell a lot about them and are not biased or have discussion of politics like the KaiserBeamz or Nick Knacks Looney Tunes History videos.
5:53 You knoe it's odd and I never really questioned it But I've always associated it billiard it's with gambling And I was born in 04 Maybe it's because I grew up watching old cartoons
Weird thing: due to how conservative my family was, during our trip to Greece, I thought that the presence of Billiards in San Torini was quite risqué and made me a (seven year old) bad boy for playing it. Also important to note that Narm is a subset of Camp, an incredibly delightful aspect of entertainment which is often linked to the LGBT+ community and thus villainised. Anyway in this house we love Dan Backslide's silliness.
ok even though i never played or any good at billards, but this confuses me, where did they get the idea of Billiards being so bad anyway. and why are pool tables in salons and bars, i mean this does not make sense back then even in modern standards. i think they are going overboard of Billiards tables even though they never played them before nor tried them, i think they watch too many movies back in the day.
This isnt Narm, narm is meant to be "A Dramatic Moment that DOESNT LAND" Narm Charm could apply more but the Dover Boys is just good and genuinely hilarious while Narm Charm also implies the material is a bit hokey and cheap.
Don’t quote me on this bc i don’t remember where i heard it from but apparently Chuck Jones created this short out of a strong dislike for The Rover Boys

This really deserves more exposure than it's received.

Hark, the dover boys
Drat them. Double drat them. They are escorting Dora Standpipe. Dear, rich, Dora Standpipe! How I love her! ...father's money.
Absolutely loving how you explain everything where anyone can watch your video!
Hey I just wanted to say I really dug this episode, and I was not expecting to learn so dang much from such a silly cartoon! Well done, 10/10

11:08 That was not Jack actually, that was his brother Harry.
Then again Jack was a terrible person

How do you know they never played one? Also, the video explains why a billiard is in a bar

*THEY DRIVE ME TO DRINK*
Confound them. (HICCUP!) CON!...FOUND THEM!
Shame. I really wanted to know what, if anything, that bathing suit guy was a reference to.
