    Really helpful intro. Just tried putting into my nice new expensive Fujifilm a recipe to simulate my cheap old pocket-sized point and shoot. I'm used to using Photoshop and Painter, but it'll be interesting to see if I gravitate towards any custom settings that work well for my painting. It could simplify workflow somewhat. Many thanks for the video!

    I shoot RAW+F with various custom settings, including some you referenced. I almost never use the RAW files. Switching to Fuji and weaning myself from LR has been liberating and empowering. On my X-Pro3, the back panel with classic view allows me to see (and scroll through) my recipes without looking at the screen or viewfinder.

    Great video! I’ve been shooting Fuji since 2016 (X-T2, H1, T4) and my usual workflow is RAW+JPEG, cull in PhotoMechanic, best shots to Lightroom or Lightroom CC. This is actually super quick for me. The only reason I shoot the JPEGs is that they give you better detail when checking the shot during shooting or in LR during post: RAW+JPEG shots have 2 more “clicks” of zoom while shooting on the X-T4 anyways. So I thought I’d try some recipes the other day and I couldn’t believe how it slowed my X-T4 down in the field. I remembered that the Fuji X Weekly guy said it was the Clarity, so I dialled that back to 0 and it helped, but it was still noticeably slower than with the default settings. Bottom line is for me I like my original workflow, and I want the camera to be as fast as possible while shooting. Maybe I’ll try the recipes again with X Raw Studio in post, but in the field, no thanks.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  3 года назад +2

      I quiet often just shoot RAW but if -2 highlights and shadows as it still applies it to the in camera preview to show me a higher dynamic range.
      When I shoot weddings I shoot raw+jpeg like that in CC and haven't. Noticed any performance changes at all.

  • @MultiMack82

    My personal favorite to use is a Kodachrome variant(XT-2/ xtrans 3) with classic chrome as my base the next would be a monochrome.
    As for my editing lately I've been using more out of camera jpeg editing in camera (raw+fine) mostly because my computer crapped out on me (need a new power brick) as far as my image quality, it's been fantastic. Mostly day trips or getting images for family get togathers for friends. No one noticed weather or not that I did any editing at all.

    I have really got into the simulations on my Mu-43 gear either. Found one or two I liked but found if I tried to change them they looked worse than default. I think camera manufacturers do a really good job on their default values for their effects and simulations. I suppose they know their gear better than me :)

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  3 года назад +1

      I also think subtle changes are better than major changes.

I can still obviously use the built in Gil simulations but I can’t access my custom recipes. I really liked the aspect you made about the 'feeling' you have for photography when producing a shot that is mostly complete and thus able to enjoy the moment captured a little fuller. In essence it's like sorting the post processing out before taking the shot rather than after (preprocessing hehe), but I think herein lies the important element; We take the shot and are left just absorbing the shot with no real intention of having to edit to see our finalised vision, we're basically 90% there. So we once again feel like 'photographers' and not 'retouchers'. If we spend 2 secs to taking a shot but 20mins editing, what are we feeling about ourselves? Are we photographers or editors?
    Photography will always be a two stage process, capturing and editing, but I think whatever aspect you finish on in that process of producing an image can leave you feeling more like that persona. So to try and sort the processing out beforehand I think is a really wise and wonderful idea. We 'finish' the entire photography process when viewing the image on the back of the camera and that can make the world of difference to how we feel about our own photography skills and 'getting it right' in camera.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
      @ThomasBusbyPhotography  3 года назад +1

      I personally love the extremes.
      More you can do in camera the better, and heavy photoshop to a insane level or even complete cgi.
      But also who you are shooting for makes a big difference, if you're just doing it because you love it then anything you do is great as long as you love it.
      But if you are doing it for others to view than what they see from the image is more important, not how it was achieved...unless you share the story as well.

    I have saved 7 different recipes I found from fuji x weekly but when you color adjust your whitebalance for let say daylight r3, b3 for one simulation and then use daylight r5, b -4 for another recipe and save each one seperately on different custom slots, it seems like the camera uses the latest color adjustment - in this case daylight r5, b -4 - for the previous simulation that uses the daylight WB option. Is there a way to overcome this? I have an Xe2 with the latest firmware.

      Recipes are more limited in video, they get a little less limited in newer models but due to the heavy processing required to apply recipes order cameras and certain parts of a recipe just can’t be applied fast enough for it to be usable during video.

    • @ThomasBusbyPhotography
