It was cleaner because the people were so poor that they didn't have anything to throw away. In 1981 Thailand most homes outside of the city still had a dirt floor. My wife's family is from 5 hours north of Bangkok. They had a dirt floor until 2001.

Agree. I think Jomtien was almost non-existent then. As I recall there was very little beyond the Asia Pattaya Hotel, which itself was in the middle of nowhere in a place called Pratamnak!
My first ever trip to Pattaya was in March 1986, and the opening of this video confirms what I thought. It was a fraction of what it is now, and you could cover the whole town on foot within a relatively short time. In those days Ko Larn had nothing on it. You took a boat over, it landed on the beach, and there was nothing there except the people who went with you. I did not return to Pattaya again until 2009, by which time it was incomparable!
My best trip was 2009. I first went in 1986, but my memory of it then was it was smelly, and not that nice. It was full of US Navy personnel when I was there, with 3 large ships anchored off-shore. No idea when they stopped going, but they sure don't go now!
beautiful. So mad at myself for not going until 2004. I was in California starting in 82 and was 25 at the time. Oh god if I had only known to travel. Instead I kept holidaying back East which I never really liked except for growing up familiarity. Lesson is to not limit yourself and to go and seek new adventures

Yes Pizza Hut, beginning of Soi Post Office, mostly French bars and restaurants, but on Jomtien that time was nothing, if I remember well
