- George Wagner, IV is standing trial for the April 2016 murders of eight members of the Rhoden and Gilley families. Wagner IV faces 22 counts including eight counts of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications, aggravated burglary, conspiracy, tampering with evidence and forgery.
Wagner’s brother, Edward “Jake” Wagner, and his mother, Angela Wagner, have already pleaded guilty to taking part in the conspiracy to murder the eight Rhoden and Gilley family members over their desire to obtain full custody of the then two-year-old daughter Jake shared with victim Hanna May Rhoden. Angela and Jake Wagner have agreed to testify against their family members.
George “Billy” Wagner, the father of Jake and George, faces the same 22 counts.
On the morning of April 22, 2016, family members found Chris Rhoden, Sr., 40, and his cousin, Gary Rhoden, 38, dead in Chris’ mobile home on Union Hill Rd. Chris Sr.’s ex-wife, Dana Manley Rhoden, 37, and their children, Hanna May Rhoden, 19, and Chris Rhoden Jr., 16, were found shot in the head in their sleep in their mobile home down the road. Hanna May had given birth days earlier to a baby girl who was not harmed. Clarence "Frankie" Rhoden, 20 and his fiancee, Hannah "Hazel" Gilley, 20, were also found shot to death in their sleep. Their six-month-old son was in between them covered in blood but unharmed. Frankie’s four-year-old son was unharmed in the home as well.
Kenneth Rhoden, 44, was found shot once in the eye in his camper on Left Fork Rd. more than seven miles away.
Angela Wagner’s mother, Rita Newcomb, pleaded guilty in 2019 to a misdemeanor count of obstruction. She had been charged with forgery and obstruction of justice for lying about signing and notarizing custody documents related to Hanna May, Jake and George’s children. Newcomb has agreed to testify against her family members.
Billy Wagner’s mother, Fredericka Wagner, was initially charged with obstruction of justice and forgery for allegedly lying about purchasing a bullet-resistant vest for Billy. The charges were dropped after it was discovered a plate in the vest was manufactured after the homicides. Prosecutors have said they may refile the charges at a later date. Fredericka has been subpoenaed to testify.

The Wagners did it so they could get custody of the young daughter Jake had with his ex Hanna Rhoden, prosecutors said. Jake indeed won sole custody of the child, now 8, after the murders. The Wagners moved to Alaska. That all changed after authorities arrested them in November 2018, sparking a legal battle lasting almost four years.

It’s awful to consider the murderers went to the funerals to watch family & friends grieve; it sickening. These people are still effected after all this time, it’s very sad

Yes, it is very heartbreaking. Our younger brother, Jody was murdered at work as he and his boss were closing up her store on the evening of December 21,2000. Two armed robbers came in, demanded and stole all the money out of the cash register then shot Jody through his heart, we found out about it the next morning. The police called our family on December 25,2000 to let us know that both were arrested. They both pled guilty to all charges and were sentence to prison.

Who has the babies now ? What did the town think when the family moved to Alaska ? When I saw that grandmother in the blk witch hat on the news the one who owns the horse stables my first thought was app mountain witch right there and I’m from ky n spotted that evil piece

1)Asking the family members there to testify, asking if they are married, IF so, how long, do they have any children, IF so, what are their names, do you work? I can understand asking about the family members about THEIR relationship to the 8 people who were murdered, BUT, asking, on LIVE TV & LIVE(on video such as this) for not only our country to see & hear, BUT anybody watching worldwide to see & hear about ANY children AND their names, NO WAY would I broadcast ANY of that private information. INSTEAD of putting ALL of the Wagner family members, LIVE, UNDER OATH AND QUESTIONING, GRILLING EACH OF THEM, WITH NO PLEAD DEALS, for whatever WEASEL, UNJUST, UNDER THE TABLE DEALS, AT LEAST 2 OF those Wagner family members, Angela AND Jake, THAT is kept from the public seeing AND hearing, BUT the Rhodes family members who testify are shown AND heard LIVE? That prosecution woman grilling this first lady witness, that prosecution woman “forgot” to ask the lady testifying there on the stand, how many times before AND after the murders has she used the toilet, taken a shower, brushed her teeth, what her every meal has been, how often does she brush her hair per day, ETC. 2)You WILL leave MY CHILDREN, EVEN though they are adults now, OUT OF THIS. The agents investigating these murders of 8 people, were NOT asked these PRIVATE QUESTIONS of THEIR LIVES.

I enjoy watching the family light up when they tell us happy memories of the Rhoden’s. It’s very humbling to learn more about the family. But also devastating that thing where taken to early!

Props to the boyfriend who stepped up to be the second baby father. Kudos to the second baby real father for not interfering. BUT that first baby father may you for ever be haunted by the deed you committed.

The young lady nurse is very well spoken. Very good communication skills under extreme duress. I'm sure all of the defense witnesses have to keep in mind that the people they're testifying against are very dangerous people with resources to retaliate. Death penalty for all the Wagner's

Anyone that can carry themselves as perfectly as she did WHILE IN THE SAME ROOM AS THE "man" THAT MURDERED HER MOM DAD and the rest of her family, is. a much better person than I am. Deputies would have tazed me at least three times and used one of those big game tranquilizer darts.

Yes I saw that as well . 25 years old and already been through 10 lifetimes of grief. I'm guessing her nurse training has been a blessing for her to allow her to grieve on her own. God bless her

No, although a daunting task. She does not command a room like some prosecutors do. Any other trial of this magnitude would have 2 prosecutors that would trade off and undoubtedly one would examine a witness with a booming voice and take over the court room.

April, you're very strong and brave, More than so the public officials that are opting out of public testimony, wish I could hug you. You're doing them proud.
I sound mean saying this but this prosecutor has had four years to prepare for this case. I feel like every time she questions the witnesses she’s not prepared with her questions. She forgets what she wants to ask or stumbles through the questions. Skips around. It’s a huge case with National attention. It’s Ohios biggest criminal case ever and maybe she’s nervous but come on. The umm umm is unprofessional and is very much a learned habit that has no place in a courtroom.
She has the difficult task of getting information brought in front of the jury in a way that isn't hearsay. the people who can testify to that information are dead. they can't say it themselves, so she has to think of creative ways to get the witnesses to say what she wants in a way that isn't "I was told or I heard or someone said."
@PJ Simon She is doing a lousy job. If she doesn't understand what hearsay is then she shouldn't be doing this job. The defence should have objected a lot more then they did. When they did she would get all snippety She should have had her questions more prepared.
The judge isn't doing his job either. He should be making sure George has no argument for an appeal.

I didn't understand why the judge said what he said after, coming out of the testimony we were not able to hear. Why can't they have close caption, when we can't see and hear what is going on?
It’s wrong. If these witnesses opt out of being seen, then we have a right to hear the audio of their testimony. When certain law enforcement officials chose not to be seen or heard towards the beginning of this trial including the current sheriff, it begs the question, “What is Pike County Trying To Hide?” In my opinion.

What do the questions about drugs have to do with these murders?
The prosecution wants to put the issue out in front of the jury to blunt any effort on the part of the defense to spin it as a reason the murders could be over their pot business, like by a Mexican drug cartel or some such.
I, AMONG MANY OTHER PEOPLE, want to KNOW WHY BOTH Angela and Jake Wagner were ALLOWED to testify with NO audio AND NO video testimonies? WHO came up with this idea AND agreement, WHO ALL went ALONG WITH THIS IDEA/AGREEMENT? As the saying goes, “this dog don’t hunt here”, OR the saying goes “Something’s smells fishy in Denmark, and IT ISN’T the fish.” ALL of the Rhoden family members were DONE DIRTY THERE with this IDEA/AGREEMENT AND WITH THE COLD-BLOODED, FIRST DEGREE MURDERS OF THEIR FAMILIES. This IDEA/AGREEMENT WITH AND FOR BOTH Angela AND Jake Wagner, AND ALL THAT ALLOWED IT should be INVESTIGATED. Will “Billy” Wagner finagle AND SCHEME for the SAME IDEA/AGREEMENT? SOMETHING is NOT above board AND BOTH LEGALLY AND HONESTLY WITH THOSE IDEAS/AGREEMENTS WITH BOTH Angela and Jake Wagner.

@@kathrynmossor9891 they usually do not give you anything that will sedate you or make you act calm like this. Especially in Ohio. Rarely you get seroquil at night that causes you to be sleepy but that’s not what this is. His lawyer told him to act like this and he’s fallowing instruction.
Honestly it doesn't matter how George Wagner behaves as their would be someone who would think it was odd, strange, suspicious, etc. And I have watched many trials and seen many different behaviors from the defendant and they are always criticized for their behavior. Not defending him just stating my observations.

Hannah Mae had a BF why would she need Jake to come help put up a baby crib the Wednesday before the murders? Some of this stuff just don’t make sense….I know what that tells me but that isn’t what people are actually testifying to…..not taking up for no one just stating a fact.
The Wagners remind me of Wesley Shermantine's family, particularly the dynamic between Wesley and his mother Susan. They had quite a lot of money and they were used to getting what they wanted. On one occasion, Sue Shermantine used a bulldozer owned by the family to destroy the house of a person who owed money to her family while the owner was present in the residence.
Wesley Shermantine and Loren Herzog are also known as "The Speed Freak Killers." They are responsible for an unknown number of homicides in the farm country around Linden California, four proven, possibly many more.

WHO has LEGAL CUSTODY of the 2 newborn babies AND Sophie? Newborn babies in April of 2016, I know, and Sophie, I do not know her age then OR now, BUT SURELY NO ONE from that Wagner family has ANY CUSTODY, do they?

Did they also kill Kenneth Rhoden because of the grower business...or because he would've been in line for custody of Sofia...or...? Many think this had to do with the business, as well as the child custody issue.
They wanted no family survivors so they could have full custody. not knowing that they are gonna get caught. So basically those babies have no one now.

@Angie Lennex Dearest Angie, you poor soul. Like almost all attorneys, she's taking her own notes. It's a thing. You would know that if you've watched enough trials or are in any way educated.
This is a case with enormous proportions. It's very difficult to get through each day.
And you figure 4 crime scene locations. These crazies who were moving to Alaska and coming back across the border. Setting fires to collect insurance money. The dynamic of the crazy family in itself planning in such detail to commit these crimes just over custody. There's a lot of Twists and turns in this case.

About the only thing this female prosecutor does not ask the family and friends of the 8 murdered victims who are testifying is “did the victim(s) prefer thick or thin crusted pizza?, and do you know how often?”.

When a witness is crying & clearly upset, she STILL does ridiculous long pauses! As the witness sits there in uncomfortable silence with all eyes on them grieving!!
They won this case due to great investigation leading to a confession. The prosecution performance seems unprepared & inept!

What an awesome trial this would be if Diane Menashe was the defense lawyer. There’s no evidence George was actually involved so far. She’d have him, without a doubt found innocent.

Shooter or not he is still guilty by association. Just like any other cases. If you were there but did nothing you would still be found guilty by association because you were there with whoever committed the crimes.

This is such a sad and tragic case. Even potentially sadder is the fact that these witnesses are living sub-cultural lifestyles. Beyond lost in terms of just plain old normal living day to day.on earth in the year 2022. Time warp.
The judge allows too many passes with the prosecutor. He seems extremely biased. His faults in action are going to either throw the case or create an easy appeal.
