I truthfully don’t understand why it’s so hard to motivate guitsr players to learn the shot that’s gonna make a huge difference in the end. Instead everyone wants to spend 35 hours learning their favorite songs instead of the theory behind the instrument

You’re a great player man. I been playing for 20 years and was curious about yourself? I have the same problem talking to people who aspire to play and they just do not want to study or learn their theory. They are grossed out by scales, memorizing chord shapes, understanding the application of forming chords through scales and how to use them and refuse to memorize the notes on the neck. It’s beyond irritating

Two other advantages to knowing the notes...It helps you think horizontally on the fretboard, instead of getting trapped in familiar box shapes. Also, for soloing, you're going to target notes and use the technique known as trapping notes, where you approach the target tone from above or below. Gotta know where that tone is to do that. One final thing, I did fart today.

I on the other hand had raced through it.
Maybe that’s why I don’t wanna pick up the guitar. Cause I know it’ll take longer to learn than me learning how to walk. And play trumpet. And percussion. And learning how to run. And of course learning how to do a front flip. Yea uh, fun. :D

Question, if you memorize the fretboard by numbers and just translate chords to those numbers is it possible to achieve the same thing? Instead of thinking of A, F, G etc for a chord you would just think 2, 5, 1?

    • @seanriley2534

No, because note position varies for each string. Also, that would imply you're playing all your chords in the same position everytime, which is massively stunting your chord vocabulary

No it’s not wrong. I wish every fucking player would be motivated to do that! Lol I been playing 20,years and I started theory 3 years in and became exceptional by comparison at a very fast rate. You have to ask yourself this question…. Do. I want to have to rely on playing other peoples or artists songs and memorize this stuff in the event that there’s a guitsr somewhere I can play in front of people on the fly?? Or should I just lesrn theory and learn how to improvise and write my own songs so I. An just pick up a guitar and noodle around with it and sound amazing?

You don't need to learn the notes, you just need to know how to make the instrument work for you. If you can learn how to make what you have in your head come out of your instrument then there is no need to know what the arbitrary names of the notes you just played. I'm sick and tired of seeing this "you need to know the notes" bullshit. In certain settings, I whole-heartedly agree that you should know the notes on the fretboard. For example, a lot of Classical Guitar litterature is written in western standard notation. Knowing the notes on the fretboard is very important in that situation and probably is in many more. However, the guitar has more than one tuning. This isn't the 1300's anymore. If you take your time learning the notes, all of the memorization is made completely useless as soon as you change the names of the notes the open strings make. There are so many great musicians that don't know the names of the notes they play. This is such a stupid way of hazing new guitar players. I understand that improving is an important skill for a lot of guitarists, but there are so many people that don't even know what a C is that can improvise to an advanced level. Stop putting yourself on such a high pedestal for committing every note and its placement on the fretboard in E standard tuning to memory. Try playing in open D tuning and your memory is going to be useless.
That being said, given your playing style, I would be curious what you would come up with if you tried playing in open D or other similar tunings. I know that I had some fun messing around with open C minor.
