This has really motivated me to practice scales. I'm so motivated that I'll watch a few other videos about scales, get bored, play some skyrim, finally pick up the guitar, play half a scale, get distracted, start playing some songs I already know and lie to myself that tomorrow I'll practice scales.
what really impresses me is not that you know this stuff so well you can teach it with ease, but how smooth you are when playing, you mentally know, and your muscles know exactly, when exactly and how exactly to play almost everything on the guitar. And when you learn something, you can apply that muscle memory to that as well. that's freaking incredible.
For me, I think the most effective fun way to play scales is get a fretboard diagram showing all the notes of a scale on the fretboard, get a backing track in that scale and then noodle until I memorized all the note placements. And then I can instantly play in any 7 modes of that specific scale
Hey man this is my first time watching your vids, I have been struggling trying to improve on the instrument and getting overwhelmed by scales but your sense of humour makes it fun to learn. subbed
Your videos, while chaotic and funny, are among the most well rounded and thorough on RUclips. Thank you for including tabs, sheet music, and high quality video in your creation. Sky’s the limit for you brother
Thank you for all of this. I was hitting the exact brick wall of progress, and now I have a bunch of new things to try. People overlook the importance of finger dexterity and simple practices that strengthen it. I started on bass so it’s one of my biggest hurdles. I didn’t even know it was possible to do all these different ways. And I really needed to venture from the “boring” scale positions cuz surfing the neck is another thing I need to work on. Thank you
Omg you are amazing at what you do. And I can also see that you are definitely down to earth and serious about what you do (despite your quirky videos). These are amazing practice ideas. It would be cool if I knew you and could jam with you, regardless of the fact that you could play circles around me. I wish that you made more videos than you do these days.
Normally I would be one of those people that watches the video then never does anything about it but not this time! I've my guitar ready to go. These tips are so helpful. I can't wait to master the fretboad with Brandon's advice. I just hope I'll be able to get into the 52 Week Guitar Player program in December.
Many of these exercises you'll find in classical music practice books, for any instrument, including guitar of course. This video pays hommage to all the teachers who came before but now introduces additional elements to fit modern day techniques AND improvisation. Great job.
Actually one of the best videos on how to practice 3 nps scales musically. That first exercise alone is a gem. Been trying to get students to get the fck out of playing g up and down with no sense of musicality
You're a talented guy with a great sense of humor. You will do well with this. There's enough stuff in this video alone to keep me busy for quite awhile. Excellent work.
Brandon, you're videos are so fantastic. They're Funny as well as Really Informative and Educational. ive learned a lot fom Round 6 in particular. Thank you!!!
I'm not offended by the original post, I seen the ad and was just intrigued. No need to call me a p00sy my dude 😅😉 def gonna try this out. Ive been stuck for 5 years
Hey man i really have to thank you for simplifying this a little for me. I mean I ve been practicing to learn the positions of each and every scale all over the fretboard by practicing on each scale separately and by having the guitar fetboard written on a notebook and showing myself the notes of the scale i want to familiraze with it . I think its a decent way but you just added to my routine new ways and I have to thank you. Keep going mate practice never stops.
You know Brandon, it's refreshing to hear someone being brutally honest (( and hilariously funny at the same time )) , there is an old saying that says (( life is tough - it's tougher if you're stupid )), you could probably also say (( practice makes perfect )) -- I think I've heard that somewhere... Thank you brother Brandon,, You're killing it Man, and I think most of us are loving it. Once again, it's refreshing to hear the un-glazed truth in how success is obtained. Keep safe and never take prisoners, they hold you down and eventually will turn on you.
I'm not offended at all Brandon, I had no idea that had not learned scales this way. I'm thrilled to learn all I can in case of surprise attack. The chords were hardest as my chording hand wrist is a bit sore from a weight incident. You've helped me see the light, It's time to shun being offended and then shun shunning.
Came across this video randomly via RUclips's recommendations. I saw X ring and realized you were a fellow bluenoser so I subscribed. Great content, Might take you up on some lessons!
"No Monkey" is what used to call it back in the 90s. My instructor had a soundboard setup with "Wrong! Do it again" soundbite from Another Brick II. It was loud and he would blast it whenever I screwed the pooch. You remind me of him as he also called me a lazy piece of shit. I like it being berated, it motivates me. Thanks Brandon!
You remind me of the bass player guy, davie504, that does videos like this but your bass has six strings on it for some reason and sounds all high pitched and stuff. You're also very right about the wrong and right way to be right and wrong on the internet about the right and wrong way to practice scales. I even saved this video to my guitar play list so I can reference it when I practice. Cheers you legendary matie home boy my dude.
I've been doing the 3rds thing for years without realizing that's what it was. Going to start working on the others (4ths, 5ths and 6ths) now. I also do one that's a 4 up, 3 down kind of thing: C-D-E-F-D-E-F-G-E-F-G-A-F-G-A-B, etc, and then descend 4 down, 3 up. I don't exactly understand why, but it's a fantastic finger strengthening exercise as well. I spent a little while devoting an hour a day to scales and, doing straight runs, 3rds, and the 4-up, 3 down thing and it didn't take long at all before all that stuff was permanently locked into my brain. Totally worthwhile...
A really good one is to play descending fourths with a triplet feel against a 4/4 beat. It feels so unnatural but has a really cool off kilter sound. I learned that one from a Ted Greene lesson online
Good stuff. Practicing scales/modes, arpeggios, double stops, octaves, etc. are just tools in your guitar playing toolbox. The one I like the best in this video is enunciating the note as you play them. Like all exercises, this will prepare you for the years ahead. One exercise of my own, which is advanced, is instead of sweeps in a single sweeping motion, alternate pick them. Yeah, it is difficult but once you master it you will be able to alternate pick anything.
Hello Brandon. Never I see an excellent teacher as you are. I have a big problem. I have a little speak English and I don't understand much of you speak because my language is Spanish. I know right in English with help of dictionary. For that reason, I don't call you, but I very interested to learn play guitar with you.
Just roasting on his viewers. This dude is hilarious. Great lesson and very entertaining. Those last two exercises look like what I need. And it sounds like he knows me too well
Great original lesson. I love your advice and sense of humour! F those who are offended. I understand all the scales and cords in themselves but my problem in this lesson and in general is when you move from one cord to another, I get lost. I can still play it but I want to understand the core concepts. Just need time, I guess. BTW, I'd take your classes hands down, but I have no money... or friends. NOW JUST LEAVE!!!!!!!!
I enjoyed the sales pitch. I wish that I could afford the lessons, but one day it'll be a cool thing to do. Chord scales! I'd never heard of that before.
BTW if seriously - you may want to look into Carl Flesch scales exercises. It's of course for violin, but it's top tier exercises proven its effectiveness over years. There are may different approaches and patterns there, like playing the whole scale on one string, playing chromatic scales, etc. IDK if it anyhow applicable for guitar but you'll never know if you wouldn't try
When he called me a lazy piece a shit I was pissed off! But I am not even mad since it's true.
