Yesterday, this company’s old CEO, mr. Jeroen van der Veer fulminated against a judicial judgement in the case of the Dutch Milieudefensie (environment defense) against Shell’s slow implementation of renewable energy. Amongst other things, mr. van der Veer said that Shell didn’t play a role in veiling their internal knowledge about the use of petrochemicals for energy and its induced climate effects. Mr. van der Veer is still not able to loose face. Several in-depth investigations have surfaced explicit knowledge of more than just one of the world’s oil kartels, that they deliberately cleaned up their research results when it came to any environmental issue. Best example; the absolute disgrace Shell left in Nigeria, true environmental destruction, no other words exist for such corporate behavior. Mr. van der Veer never took his responsibility in the Nigeria case, he just cashed in his monthly allowance and kept his mouth shut. Meanwhile mr. van der Veer gets a full fledged corner on Dutch television where he once more shows his true allegiance to Shell by repeating all the lies, Shell is working on it. Yeah, we’ve all seen it. In the ‘90s under van der Veer, Shell took over the production facility of several promising Dutch innovations regarding solar energy. Their first action after the takeover was to export the entire facility to Germany. The once promising idea was marketed on too high a price an overhauled by other initiatives. My humble self today is not aware of any Shell solar panel still being produced, let alone sold. By the way, happy partner in their scam was energy company Nuon, now eaten up by Vattenfall.
Overall, Shell’s conduct has been dubious, the company received and still receives large subsidies for dubious innovation projects that continuously don’t seem to take hold when they’re launched. Also they still receive large sums of taxpayer money for their developments of new oil wells. Further, taken account of Shell’s history concerning South Africa, Shell’s conduct can only be seen as bashful, shameful, counterproductive, in the absolute worst way strategic.
Anyhow, when I still need Diesel, I for one won’t put my feet on a Shell gas station. I advice you to do the same, that just might be the only way to get some sense into this company. Further I would say the Dutch judge should oblige former and contemporary heads of Shell to read and test their knowledge on Jeremy Rifkin and his view on energy for the future, and the energy market. In his view large corporations like Shell will be phased out. Like the dinosaurs were once phased out in the Jurassic age on which sediments companies like Shell built their riches, they too will now collapse from the paradigm shift towards free and always available energy. And pssst, they only got themselves to blame, when they truly had been honest with us, they had long ago put the research they acquired for cars that only need a tiny drop of petrol in their tank on the market, which would mean we wouldn’t be here now.

Interesting stuff. Call me a pessimist but I think we all know which scenario is more likely. There are too many powerful (and wealthy) vested interests seeking to maintain the status quo. Meaningful change will only come when it is too late and even the elite realise that the status quo cannot be maintained.

  • @Dr_Xyzt

Yeah. Scramble is safe to anticipate. Many of us want a lot out of life and I see that as unreasonable. We had utopia when all we had to do was grow food. Granted, I like my sports truck quite a bit, I do know that the energy conscious way to live is to be dispersed as a mixture of people to food growing land. I would have to grow the food. I would have to insulate myself at night. The benefit these days is solar energy for winter heat, but we need a lot of solar surface area regardless. With people commuting to work and infatuation with big houses, it's apparent that we're doing things the hard (and stupid) way. Shoot, I try to limit myself. I'm at 1200 square feet and I try to adapt myself to a temperature range of 68-87. I live during daylight hours. I ventilate instead of air condition.

@sebastian56261 do you realise that splitting the water atoms will by defenition cost as much energy as it will generate trough hydrogen fuel (assuming 100% efficiency)? H2 is a good energy carrier, but the energy still has to come from some renewable source (wind, solar water turbines) to make it truly renewable.

It'll be scramble. Humankind, especially the wealthy, is not willing to make the necessary sacrifices for the blueprint model. God forbid, when we run out of energy, mankind might actually have to exert some energy through physical labor to maintain daily life, and even more unthinkable, might have to actually speak to another human being as there will be no electricity to charge a smartphone.

BUDDY, renewable energies are being designed and developed faster than carbon fuel technologies ever were. Those new technologies require a greater human potential (that means more jobs) than simply digging up carbon that has been invested in the earth for millions of year and ignoring environmental consequences. Continuing the status-quo will NOT stem US (or Euro) unemployment, EVER.

I would assume you are referring to the type of planning that East Germany, and Russia had in play. Certainly it can't be the Chinese drift from central planning to a capital market. Ask Spain how their Green planning is working out

    Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Things will change when solar energy is nearly a hundred percent efficient and free.
There will be geothermal energy as well as many alternatives.
